  1. Nice wireless sets there - even I was able to work on these when I was younger - usually was a duff valve that was the problem.  It was a highly skilled job to tap each one with the handle of the screwdriver to see which one was microphonic - then just change it and hey presto.....

TV sets were also very similar.

Being an apprentice TV engineer you soon got asbestos fingers. You also got  into the habbit of doing a good job when you cleaned the old B&W TV screens, it was a major job that all apprentices had to do and if you didn't do it correctly start all over again.

  2. Yes, and that plank that had to be crossed on the path down the cliff side.......

And talking of sex of coal, I can remember (just) when the whole load was just dumped in the back street and had to be loaded into the coal house through the wooden hatch. By the time I moved to secondary school we were posh, we had coke.

when I was up a few weeks ago I went over to Philadelphia. My big sister and I went to see my Nana's old house We had a drive up the back street and 90% still had the old coal hatches.I did wonder if the outside netties where still there,.Bloomin cold in the winter and that Izal paper!!

  3. Morning all

As others, we seem to have wall to wall sunshine today. Unfortunately I can't take advantage by going walking as I seem to have pulled something or tweaked something in my calf muscle. it's been bugging me for nearly a fortnight now. It eases up a bit when I rest it, or overnight, but as soon as I walk on it, it's back to square one.

This afternoon, I am told, I am going to look at wedding cars. At one point it was going to be wedding horses and carts so I guess I should be thankful for small mercies.

One for you Bod we used to get our coals A'la carte, cul de sac.not off them sunnerland folk. (we knew them as blastys) on a bike. I always used to think one leg would be more muscular than another and they would walk in a big arc

  4. Morning all, North Wales is cold and dull (just like January). I was freezing cold up at Llyn Alwen yesterday evening despite having all the thermal layers,I even managed to catch some fish so won't starve. Have a good one-Simon
