  1. Not long now. I have a feeling they are doing a partial retool of the Merchant Navy the more I think about it.

They're probably just going to tool the missing tenders and reuse the loco tool. I just have that feeling...

The RCTS in Locos of the SR & Sean Day-Lewis in "Bulleid, last giant of steam" both state that Bulleid wanted to drive the valve crankshaft by  a propeller shaft & gears as in rotary cam motion, instead of chains,  but the necessary gears could not be obtained in wartime. He also had Caprotti Valve Gears Ltd draw up an arrangement to use Caprotti valves instead of piston valves but this was not followed up.

That's all the motivation I need. No I just need to go looking for some worthy candidates to hack up

    Hi Rockalauncher,

There is a model in the NRM at York that looks just like that and I built the model from memory, so it may not be quite correct but near enough for fun.

    Gibbo.

I just did a quick google search about this loco and it turns out Matt Wickham 3D printed one for the Hornby chassis.

Might see if he's willing to print me one.

    Hi There,

Austerity Q1 style would be my answer, one set of gear between the frames driving three cylinders just like this one.

    Gibbo.

Now isn't that something. Not sure I could pull it off but I'll add it my list of things to try out. Right after I finish my overhead electric A4

A rebuilt but based on one that was not rebuilt. If the rebuild program had continued to include all of the Bullied pacifics a Caprotti one would have almost certainly have been tried. It might be worth looking in the records to see if one was planned.

So one of the light pacifics then.

Don't suppose you know where I could check if they ever thought of using caprotti?

I often wondered what Hornby did with its returns. My guess is most are stored for repairs and gradually stripped down. But i’d imagine theres both finite time and space for hanging on before getting rid.

Makes you wonder if someone was just asked to shift a lot of the stored stock if that's the case.

Looks to me like it's all Hornby stock which does lend to that idea. If there was anything by other manufacturers that'd add some weight to the model shop returns theory.

He's got some useful stuff on there, I'll give him that.

My school of thought is this Hornby repairs / testing / returns left overs being sold off either directly / indirectly, or maybe a Biffa Skip Raider cashing in.

Again, a good theory. It'd certainly explain the mangled valve gear on some of those chassis. But I can't see a manufacturer throwing away serviceable chassis when the broken bits can be replaced.

Thinking of snapping up one of his Duke of Gloucester chassis to make a caprotti Merchant Navy mentioned on the imaginary loco's thread. Beats some of the prices I've seen for loco's in similar condition.

It looks like someone who has a deal with a model shop, anything they get in as blown up, dropped or bodged, comes his way. Or perhaps he has a shop and these are the leftovers from repairs or items beyond repair.

Sounds possible. It would certainly explain where it's a lot of recent Hornby, most of which look like ex trainset items.

But still, there's a lot of broken loco's in there.

    Good source of spares though...

Hopefully, if they do, there'll be at least one new tender and locos numbered between 35001 and 35010, so we can all have a bit of a change from the alternating "one loco, two tenders" cycle which got stale for me several years ago.

    John

I agree and you know why we're going to get the missing tender types? Because the one I've ordered is getting it's tender cut up to represent the 5250 gallon type.

Sometimes you need to invoke sods law to get something done :jester:

I think that despite a lot of the mazak rot sufferers being out of warranty and therefore not being eligible for replacement (i.e. not necessarily directly costing anybody but the customer) I think the negativity around it would have given the manufacturers enough of a kick to make sure that is the case.

You mentioning mazak rot has just got me thinking... I think we are getting a retool on the rebuilt merchant navy. Why? Because I just bought one... Set to arrive on the 6th, one day after the reveal.

    Calling it now

I still think that 'pre-Grouping' is becoming more of interest to people from what I'm seeing.

    The Singles I've mentioned earlier.

How about Hornby getting into the Atlantics - remove the Bachmann monopoly?

A Claughton would be interesting as well.

Definitely re-introduce the blue Class 56's - I might eventually get one!

    Al.

I have one of the older Lima tooled Hornby models so wouldn't mind a modern one

This months Model Rail has an article on upgrading the Dapol/Railroad County - sometimes these articles seem to come just before the manufacturer announces they are about to do all of those improvements for you! A 2021 for an old style vinegar works?

Don't know if I have the december issue, will have to have a look when I get home.

And yes, to go along with a certain 16xx when they become available

I think we've had a Saint to 'Triang standards' derived from the old Hall. But the ex Dapol County to my eyes looks very little like a real Hawksworth County and the prototype fitting into the seemingly very popular BR steam era I think there is a ready market for a model to current standards. I think we'd both buy 'County of Worcestershire' :)

Indeed. A potential project of mine would have been to combine a Hall Chassis with County body but I 've held off just in case.

Another class I'm hoping for beside the Saint though is a 2021 pannier... Take a guess as to why :P

  14. Just now, Dunsignalling said:

We have, but long ago when the Hornby name was hyphenated with Tri-ang's.

Definitely wouldn't cut the mustard nowadays.

    John

Had a feeling we'd had one at some point.

Isn't the Hawksworth County a more obvious gap than the Saint?

    Yes and No...

We've had the county more recently than we've had a saint in RTR. I don't know we've ever had a saint in RTR, correct me if I'm wrong

My guess is that Bachmann will announce the Manor and get it to market early next year.

Back on topic though a County loco would be good, although outside my time range. Hornby might have missed the boat a bit as it would have made sense to release at the same time as the hawkesworth carriages.

Maybe we can expect a re-run of them then?
