Watched the announcement video (wished I hadn't) -are the mk 3's the former oxford ones, I don't recall the Hornby models having that detail at the ends and the coupling is different (I think)?

    mark

They retooled the Mk3 a couple of years back starting with the sliding door (GWR/Cross Country/Scotrail) ones before doing the slam door versions in at last Midland Pullman and East Midlands Trains liveries.

An update on most outstanding items - but not the TPE802 amongst a few others.

    Has it gone back again?

Wondering if if the dates are just missed off the image and they are due between May and August as the GWR 802 is still showing as due in the spring on the website.

So now we have 27 x 175 units in addition to all Avanti’s 221 and EMR’s 222 apparently seeking new TOC’s .Pardon me but where are all this lot bound  ?

Apparently the 175's are going to another TOC but it is not known where.

221's - 2 are already with Grand Central with 8 to follow, Cross Country are also getting 7 as HST replacements.

The 810's are shorter I believe. The 805's will probably be quite similar to 802's since they need to run long distances on diesel.

810's are 24m rather than the 26m on the rest of the 80x's due to platform length at St Pancras.

Yes and no. On the one hand you have the two mark 4 coaches in the 1990s INTERCITY 225 train set - these are missing the orange cantrail line and probably the coach-end data panels etc. but they look the part (at least until you mix them with coaches that have the cantrail line). My tender drive, train set, Flying Scotsman loco is also fine livery wise but at least some versions of the Railroad model went too far in terms of livery simplification (just a single colour for the letters LNER and numbers 4472 which should really be several colours giving a 3D effect) and the end product looks wrong as a result.

How about these mark 2s at Fishguard Harbour behind a class 37? Not sure if they are the exact same coaches (as in vehicle numbers) and there's only four of them but it looks to be the same EWS livery.

Perhaps not even speculation. I have zero 'inside knowledge'. I don't even know what external visible differences (other than livery and number of coaches) there are between the various existing class 80x units and/or Hornby's models of them. For example, I got the impression that after the GW electrification scope was cut back the GWR class 800/0 and 800/3 units ended up having more in common with the class 802 fleets (eg. larger fuel tanks possibly?) than they do with LNER's class 800/1 and 800/2 units but I'm not even sure of that.

This is exactly the sort of thing I was wondering - had Hornby assumed that they could get away with using the class 800 tooling as-is for the 802s and 805s but have now been told that there are visible differences with the real thing and are having to make a new tooling for the 805s to include these differences?

Yes, that's another possibility. I was really just wondering whether the differences between the various 80x were actually visible externally.

Hopefully this will help with some of the differences in the 80x's:

GWR 800/802 - no real difference as both classes now have same rated engines and work in multiple together. The 802's have roof mounted brake resistors.

LNER 800/801 - 800's have 750 rather than 940BPH engines, 801's have a 'limp home' engine also have mini buffets.

TPE/Hull Trains 802 - smaller kitchen, assume same as the 5 car GWR otherwise.

Lumo 803 - electric with no 'limp home' engine and standard class only.

Avanti 805/807 - believe has a different engine to the earlier 80x series on the 805, mini buffet and smaller kitchen. 807 - electric with no 'limp home' engine and new length of 7 coaches.

EMR 810 - 24m so can fit a 10 car set into London St Pancras.

On the ATW one, how much stock is there to run with this? I'd have thought a better option would be the newer white/red livery so there's at least 67/mk4s and a 153 IIRC to go with. Likewise the chances of having 231s in matching livery is fairly high given Hornby are on with 755. I expect most of the stock to run with the ATW one is more WCML based?

I do wonder though sometimes how much attention Bachmann pay to timelines in privatisation. They categorise it as one era (9), everyone else breaks it down into 3 (9, 10, 11). To them, is somebody like me who is only interested in Era 11 say from Hornby, going to be looking at anything Era 9, such as a Northern Spirit 158 to run with an LNER Azuma? I did feed this back to them in their Club survey.

Era 9 in Bachmanns eyes is about 28 years IIRC. That's like combining Era's 6, 7 and 8 if you wind the clock back from 1995 instead of forwards.

Still a reasonable amount of stock I would say. Hornby has done ATW 67/mk3 set and 153's while Bachmann has done 150's and an older 158 and Realtrack have done Pacers. With the franchise finishing in 2018 you can have FGW and GWR for South Wales with GWR 800's, 158's and HST's along side Cross Country 170's so I would say all of the routes are covered.

As I said I would prefer an end to end with loco changes but I have loads of wagons for block trains so unsure how I could do this with an end to end station. As i wanted it to be based on the fylde coast I wondered whether to use a bit of modellers license (ok a lot) and assume that Blackpool south and north were actually linked across town as a kind of loop off the west coast mainline or have an end to end and add in a branch to Fleetwood which is only accessible by a station reversal. This could assume a freight terminal or something at Fleetwood.

Thanks for listening to me prattle on!

I have a end to end station layout and a few wagons. The main freight train that I have are some tankers which are used to bring the fuel to the fuel point in the carriage sidings which involves a shunt via the station.

  8. Not much has occurred over the last month but I have now started work on the carriage sidings. The platform by the sleeper on the right is now stuck down and I have added the fuel points between the two middle sidings. The spacing is as such so multiple units as well as locos/HST can use the fuel point.

I got a email back from Hornsby stating that it was a great idea (their words not mine) and it was certainly worth taking up with the marketing department.  We shall have to see!!!

    That's good to hear!

Very short lived livery! And the coach livery for the three ex Grand Cancel sets is different to the core EMT livery so you'd be after another set of coaches to go with them...

Yes. While you could have another set of coaches you could also run with the VP power cars and 2+8 sets as well.

Has anyone checked the prototype, real things?

    ;) :jester:

Not 100% sure but in think on one of the power cars it is a little wonky from when I have seen it parked up at Derby.

it looks like they may have changed the way they manufacture the wheel sets to get the brake disc effect.  I wonder if there are limitations to casting such small details, which is why they have now got an over sized flange.

I have just started looking at my and a number have the wobble.  This frustrates me a bit and will look to see if there is a quick fix.

    Cheers

Not sure. I haven't really had any problems with my set. Just one coach going a litle bit wobbly when running at high speed.

I've taken a photo of the pizza cutter wheels from my sliding door GWR coach.

They obviously have a detailed brake disc element to them, but really deep flanges, that makes them unsuitable for fine scale trackwork. Are these present on XC/Scotrail coaches? Is it possibly an oversight from Hornby, or is there a reason they have such deep flanges?

    IMG_20200628_125419480.jpg

It's very similar on my Cross Country ones as well.

  15. Since the last update I have been treated to some more stuff to get one with my layout. This includes station nameboards and signage as well as some signals (ground and main) which will help progress as well as a second fuel point for the carriage sidings. I have now placed the platform numbers and nameboards on the layout with the name 'Dale End Lane' (my dads layout being Dale End Road). I have also got some new models these being a EMT 158 773 to go alongside the other EMT units and some mk3's for my HST's so I can now run a 2+6 EMT HST and a FGW mk3 to add into my GWR set's to act as a luggage vehicle in the Summer.

  16. So what have I done over the last two weeks?

I have ballasted some more at the back of platform 1 where there is a drop behind the baseboard. I have put this off until now because of the drop but I found some foam which i could stick in the gap while I was doing the ballasting to close the gap. While a small areas remain overall I think its a good job.

With the arrival of 6 of the 7 Cross Country Mk3's (Sliding Doors) I thought I would address the possible issue of having no room to stable 3 HST's in the carriage sidings. I did this by moving one of the points on one of the sidings from the main line connection to the other connection which now allows for 2 2+6 and 1 2+7 HST's to be stabled and up to 3 other units on the other sidings.

  17. Even though I have more time a seem to have spent this just playing around on my dads larger layout and not don that much on my own layout. Anyway I have done a little bit of ballasting around the main junction area of the station. I might have another go at the area in the bottom picture over the weekend.

That's the one I meant, you said earlier about the GWR comp getting put onto one.

Yes the GWR one will be applied to a 802 train but nothing has been said about a model. The Hornby one looks like the Hornby junior set from what I have seen?

    A link would be useful?

I've searched the GWR website and facebook page, and cannot see anything.

Sorry: I found it though twitter early this morning. This is the website link:

Is that on an 800? For some reason I thought it was a 395 it was on.

Would be cool if one of the TOCs then put it on a real train!

Not sure about the Hornby comp but the GWR one says it will be applied to a 802 on the drawings.

They do look rather tasty.  I see the old slam door carriages are appearing, with most >£40 on eBay.  Be interesting to see if a) there value drops upon release, b) if more appear and c) if the colours between batches are anything like each other.  More have appeared, including the GWR ones, although only one in stock, the rest are sold out for GWR...

    Cheers

They do look good. I think the XC ones look a little different to the slam door version (could be wrong) but I would be surprised if the GWR ones are different in terms of colours.
