  1. Thank you for the replies. Very interesting to read about these things! Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the track plan for Oxford?
  2. Hello everyone. I wasn't sure where to put this, and I assumed this would be the best place. Over the last few days I have been trying to find locations in the UK where all of the Big Four met - either a junction or station. Does anyone know of any such places?
  3. Thank you, sir! A very insightful video, indeed!
  4. Hello everyone! I need some help. I am attempting to fit the DCC decoder and speaker to my Dapol Terrier Brighton Works, but I am having some difficulties due to the lack of instructions. Here is the first picture. What do I need to do with this capacitor? What about the speaker?
  5. I've been thinking about the layout I want to create. Originally, I was looking at building in a light railway-style with a small country terminus. However, I have also been considering rebuilding Stroud Cheapside (born and raised in the Golden Valley) under different circumstances from reality. What if the original company hadn't been sold to the GWR in the late 1840s? I would like to explore this possibility a little.
  6. Hello all! Does anyone know of where I can get my hands on a track plan for Stroud GWR station? I've done extensive searching only to draw a blank. I can find track plans for Stroud Midland, but not GWR...
  7. So, yesterday I took delivery of my brand new Minerva Models DCC Sound Victory in Lined Red. I am very happy with the quality of the locomotive! The next step is to increase the amount of stock available to me and the amount of track (more straights and more points for starters).
  8. Thank you for the welcome, delticfan! My partner has given me permission to acquire a new locomotive, so that is what I shall be doing soon enough. I am thinking about a Minerva Victory Class in Lined Red. My partner said she also likes this model, so I am on to a winner it seems!
  9. Andrew P, thank you for the advice. I have never heard of the ACE system before, and after looking at both it and your video, I have decided it is an excellent system. One think I would like to check first: is it compatible with any DCC decoder or does it have restrictions?
  10. Does anyone have any suggestions for a DCC controller for O gauge? I was looking at either the Hornby Elite or Gaugemaster Prodigy 2 Advance. From what I have read, the GM system is mostly recommended for exhibition layouts, whereas the Hornby system comes highly recommended for home ones. I like the compactness of the Hornby system combined with its increased power output over the GM system. Also, since my girlfriend has also started taking an interest, the two controller knobs on the Hornby one mean that we can "play at trains" together. However, if anyone has anything to say about either system, I am looking for advice and suggestions.
  11. Bgman, the more the merrier! I am always open to new ideas! Nearholmer, while it is true that there is no rule about only using finescale, I am not so interested in the older tinplate, since it seems to be too "toy-like" for me.
  12. Hello MarshLane, thank you for the welcome! I have ordered some more track and a brake van from Hatton's, as well as a Zimo DCC sound chip and speaker from DigiTrains. Now we play the waiting game.
  13. If it helps, I have a Dapol A1X Terrier "Brighton Works".
  14. Thank you for the advice and recommendations so far, guys. I have some more questions regarding sound decoders. I have read that YouChoos are a good company to buy from. I have checked their website and the shear number of decoder chips and speakers has caused me great confusion. If price were no object, what should I get in terms of decoder chip and speaker combination to give the best sound?
  15. Good, then I shall look to subscribing as soon as possible. My immediate goal is to get a continuous loop to play with. When I am next paid, I will be making a purchase from Hatton's.
  16. Does the Gazette ship abroad? Since I live now in Russia 11 months of the year, I have enough stuff back in England for my parents to deal with! From the bits and pieces I have read about the history of O gauge, I find myself agreeing with this sentiment wholeheartedly. I like some of the locomotives which Dapol produces, but I am considering saving my money and going for Minerva, since they have (for me) more interesting models. The price of RTR stock is not such an issue for me, so I happy to stick with this for now.
  17. As far as I can tell, Alphagraphix has no online presence, right? Unfortunately, going to shows right now is a little difficult due to my life situation. Maybe in the future it will be possible, but not right now.
  18. Thank you, doilum, for your reply. I am not so worried about prototype geography, it's never been the main concern for me. As one man once said: "It's my railway and I'll jolly well run what I like on it". It would be nice to hear about rolling stock kits as well. I see that Connoiseur Models make some very nice Light Railway style coaches, but in my view, rolling stock kits seem to be far more fragile that locomotive ones. Could anyone confirm or deny this?
  19. Hello all! This is my first foray into this scale after some time with OO and HO, plus a long period of lost interest. As of this New Year, I have decided to revive my love for railway modelling. Yesterday, I acquired a Gaugemaster Premium Starter Set second-hand from Hatton's. I am pleased with it so far, and I think it is a nice point to start from. I will continue to slowly, but steadily expand my collection, mostly with track first and the odd piece of RTR rolling stock. I have a plan for what I would like to do in the far future, but for now I am happy to just expand my collection a little. That being said, I have some questions about this scale. There are some lovely RTR locomotives available from a variety of sources, but inevitably I will be lead down the path of kitbuilding. I know about two starter kits available: Tower Models Andrew Barclay and Connoisseur Models Starter 0-4-0/LNER Y7. Are there any others? Does anyone have any recommendations or advice for a complete newbie to model making (outside Warhammer, which is just small plastic pieces easily glued together)? Thank you for any advice you can provide!
