And I do think some of these compromises will start being less frequent.

Hornby needed to create wagons that could reasonably represent LNER/NER/ER, SR, GWR/WR, and LMS/LMR prototypes. Why? Because the TT market is small. And when Hornby was designing these wagons, the market was completely unproven. If Hornby got too region specific, they would have needed to tool up many more variants with corresponding increases in costs. And the individual tooling might not generate sufficient sales to justify the investment.

Indeed, the time will come for accurate diagram number wagons etc, as I believe the scale isn't going away (certainly hope not as I want to do a layout in it when I move) but for now, all there need be freight wise is an open, a van, a hopper, a mineral and a flat really, specific details not overly important at the off to most you'd assume

The vans, not the brake vans.

    LNER vans had sliding doors.

This is pure GWR but with LNER markings.

I think this feeds into the enthusiast/lay person debate. For me, and baring in mind I model in 00, I don't really care if I have the exact correct diagram number of van for a certain loco or era, I just want a line of boxes behind a loco they broadly match. That van, GWR as it is, does match the previously released locos in terms of operator with LNER on the side and I highly imagine most people haven't noticed or realised they aren't strictly correct; and I'll wager wouldn't care if it was pointed out.

  4. Companies only tend to go off of direct reports to themselves I'd imagine, where they can actually take apart returned products and assess what the issue may be and any themes. As far as Hornby are probably concerned, someone saying 'this doesn't work' online probably isn't overly helpful if they can't see the model to make their own conclusions, even if the loco is taken apart on video, there are just so many variables.

More reviews are appearing on YouTube. Just search "Hornby Black Five review" and you'll find 'em. That duff loco--to-tender connection appears to be cropping up in the majority of them.

Is it time for Hornby to be proactive and do something about it?

Presumably, Hornby, with access to the production/sales figures (which none of us have) and support requests (which we can guess to a degree) will be doing just that, assuming the numbers indicate that something needs to be done.

I think I've seen 4 videos of faulty ones, assume there are 3 faulty ones for each one on Youtube, thats 16. If they've made 100 that's a problem, if they've made 1500 less so

You won't need to, the Black 5 is probably the last of the retool designs, except the streamlined B12. Hornby are short of money so they are recycling their old designs, recent releases like the 4p and 8f are designs that are over 20 years old, but are a good cash cow. Well that is what their new management thinks.

A statement based on facts or imagination?

not sure why theres a spot hidden under the top of the smokebox cowling though.

That's the hole in the streamlined casing for the steam to eject from the chimney through with the wall behind it no?

Must have been really throwing it down, chap seems to be using the opportunity to catch a few more litres into the tender tank!

Rails and Kernow reporting in stock.

    Looks mighty fine...

Except for only being able to run it on a Cattle Train (given headlamp code) forward, and a stopping passenger when running tender first! What on earth were Hornby thinking....?

EDIT - noticed rear lamp position.

The lamps, at least the front ones, are interchangeable as discussed at length on this thread iirc

So, Hornby is halfway there after 18 months.

Well, when the Princess, 50, 66 and J50 are released, all supposedly by the end of the year I think that'll be an equivalent size range in 1/3rd the time if I'm not mistaken

Maybe Hornby should have thought of that and got a properly thought out and logical range of good quality products ready before launch?

If the answer is they don't have sufficient capacity for a  viable TT range, why launch a TT range? The fact they have driven other potential TT suppliers out of the market without being able to offer products of their own is crazy and does nothing to encourage growth of the scale.

But they did, and do have a viable TT range? You can view it here if you like:

Hornby TT:120 Catalogue | Hornby UK

As for driving suppliers out, I'm not sure that's fair. Fair enough they announced some of the same things as Heljan but the choice to pull out was theres. If their 31 was at CAD stage it would be out now if they had carried on with it and we've seen not a peep of a Hornby 31.

A range that isn't as big as you'd like =/= a range that isn't viable.

We are desperate for a J50 said noone ever.

Yet we still have no DMUs (either first or second generation), no Standard 5s, Standard tanks or 4Fs - you know stuff that would actually be useful to a wide range of people who want to run a railway realistic and appropriate stock.

How long do you think it takes to design, tool, check, modify, approve, produce, ship and market a single product, let alone multiple out of interest?

What is it with Hornby and Flying Scotsman, didn't they release 3 special Hornby Dublo Flying Scotsmen about a year ago? I have the Steam fitted one on order which is normal Hornby, my other ones are all Railroad versions and the steam fitted one was a decent price for what you get.

That's the loco little Timmy knows and by extension (and probably much to their annoyance, his parents. Additionally, while you or I might see it as just another steam loco it is special to a large group of people. Every version they do seems to sell out, so why not make them while they can?

Is there an explanation as to why you should not use the double chimney when using the steamer feature?

I would imagine that with the double chimney fitted some vapor would collect on the plastic middle moulding, which would form a bead which could drop onto the pad which creates the steam, causing the flow of steam to stop.
