Can you remember what the train was?

Just that although it seems to be a Class 6 goods, the loco's heating boiler is working.

I think it was a 'mixed train' from Wick displaying a wrong headcode and with the SPV van equipped with a through steam pipe for the passenger stock. The slide is an original which I purchased a long time ago and unfortunately I don't have any further details.

No paperwork, I'm afraid - but a photo might be of interest : -

    Unidentified class 47 ( possibly .556 - a Cardiff loco ??!? ) with 13.45 ex Aberdeen : The Shevock, 14/5/84

Great photos and thanks for posting. Interesting to see two containers being conveyed. As far as I know these mixed trains normally only conveyed one container at a time.

  3. Does anyone please have a copy of the BR instructions for the working of mixed trains conveying container wagons between Aberdeen, Inverness and Wick from early 1984 until sometime in 1985?
This traffic flow was conveyed using a small fleet of (five?) container wagons equipped with 'through pipes' for vacuum brakes and steam heating.

Attached is a photo I took of 40015 on arrival at Inverness with 1N27 13.55 Aberdeen to Inverness 'mixed train' on Saturday 5th May 1984. Note the container wagon behind the loco.

    Many thanks

  4. Hi,

Forgive me if this has already been asked, but what has happened to the UK Model Shops Directory website -  www.ukmodelshops.co.uk which was up and running until only a few months ago?

I always found this website to be very useful for listings of exhibitions and swapmeets.

    Hi Mark,

thank you for the kind words!

Regarding the signs, I started by purchasing the "Station Signs and Posters Set S06 (Scottish Region)" as a download from Scalescenes:

    https://scalescenes.com/product/r001a-station-signs-and-posterboards/

I used this for the posters and timetables etc.

I was also going to use it for the station name boards and associated signs, but I found the blue that Scalescenes used in the download to be too light for my liking, so after a bit of a search I found this on Wikimedia Commons:

    https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Scottish_Region_of_British_Railways_totem_Redvers.png

Using a sample of this blue (which is RGB Red 0, Green 140, Blue 233) and the Font "Trebuchet MS" (Bold setting) I then concocted my own signs in MS PowerPoint, which I then printed out and attached to the buildings and signposts.

    Hope this is of help!

    Richard.

    Hi Richard,

    Many thanks for your reply.

Is the platform 'running in board' structure scratch built or a kit?

    Kind regards

Have you tried Six Bells Junction?

I lived in Cambridge 1959-1973, then moved to St.Ives, retaining close links with CBG. I don't have the notes to hand, but know that I travelled on a few of these, I shall have to scour my notebooks (in the loct.

I remember D5616, 455662, and D1512, along with other 31s. I'll post on here if I find anything, but my dates may actually be slightly too early.

    Hi Stewart,

Many thanks for your reply and if you could please check your notes that would be very much appreciated.

The Six Bells Junction is a good website so far as it goes, but barely begins to even touch the surface as regards the numerous merrymakers and charters etc which BR ran back in the day.

A little more progress to report, a set of scratchbuilt platform lamps, signage and the backscene now in place.

The lamps used the Chris Nevard method, a length of 3mm bamboo rod, a nail and some plastic tube.

The backscene used a panorama taken from Google Street View, played around with in MS Paint and printed across 6 landscape A4 sheets which were pritted together and trimmed to shape.

Great little layout and well done.

How did you make your totem signs?

  8. Here goes with my request from 1978, which hopefully someone please can kindly answer.

Back in the Autumn of 1978 BR ran Blackpool Illuminations merrymakers from Ipswich and Great Yarmouth/Norwich on two Saturdays 23rd September and 7th October 1978, with the respective portions attaching at Ely. The return working on both dates departed Blackpool North late on the Saturday evening at about 23.00 hrs with the Norwich/Great Yarmouth portion being detached at Ely in the early hours on the Sunday morning.

Did any forum members travel on the Saturday 7th October 1978 merrymaker to Blackpool and still please have their notes and or photos which might identify the loco(s) that worked this train, especially the Great Yarmouth/Norwich portion to and back from Ely?

I’ve already tried the Ipswich Transport Society, however their records only go back to 1981.

    Many thanks

    Mark
