  1. Some unreasonable force and pinging one of the wheels across the room later and they are off! :) Although I may well have damaged the insulation on one of them, the bit that protrudes seems to have been ripped off in the process.
  2. This is an interesting idea, thanks I did find a post on another forum that said they had done the same thing although it was a bit fiddly. It may be a bit beyond me for now but something to consider! :) Thank you again Halvarras, I have been trying without success to remove the wheels on the insulated side they just will not budge at all. Tried twisting between fingers and tried holding one side with some pliers and no success. Are they threaded on one side, or do they just pop off with enough force? Yeah I have already got to that stage after not even very long in the hobby! I have quite a small room for it all and lots of other collectable rubbish. Is there a thread for people showing off their collection and displays?
  3. Thank you, useful to know. So how much £££ do you regret it? :P The maroon one is very nice, I have a Bachman warship already and it is undoubtedly the better model, particularly mechanically but the maroon warship is a looker.
  4. Thank you, that was extremely clear instruction, even a buffoon like me could follow it! :) I rotated the gears until I found the culprit and it appears that both gears have cracked on both axles, they do however seem to be not slipping on the axle...somehow. Is it difficult to remove a wheel from the axle to get the cog off and replacement on? Also anyone got any experience of the brass gears and whether they destroy the existing plastic gears? They for some reason seem to be cheaper than the 3d printed ones. EDIT: also apologies for the fluff! I think the previous owners ran their trains on the carpet, the Duchess of Sutherland which was also in the lot that I bought was really tied up with hair.
  5. Thank you @Halvarras I hope to take a look inside later this week and will come back for help I'm sure :)
  6. Thank you, when they put it together they actually soldered one of the motor contacts to the screw in the centre of the motor, it feels like it was probably last off the production line on a Friday. I did not fancy having to solder it all back together but if its likely to be a gear tooth then you are probably right, nothing to lose (apart from the brush springs as they no doubt disappear off into god knows where). Are the gears fairly easy to source or am I investigating fruitlessly. I actually picked up all three in the hope to sell them on for charity, although I have to admit the warship maroon livery had left me tempted to keep it. Given it was a mainline, I assumed it was not worth much in any case. In hindsight I probably overpaid for the lot, but I do quite enjoy working on them to get them working, just not that confident.
  7. I recently acquired three model trains with a bunch of track and other bits and pieces. Two of which were non runners and one 08 shunter which worked but needed a service. All three are now running and running quite well, however whilst the warship goes around quite nicely now, it has an incredibly noisy motor. Is that normal? Any thoughts on what could be cause it? I do notice that the speed is a bit inconsistent as well. I have got a little clip below of the sound any help would be appreciated. The only thing I really did to get it working was solder 3 wires back on to the power collection contacts, cleaning the wheels and a tiny bit of oil on the main motor spindle (?). Its a shame as visually it is basically mint and the lighting still works.
  8. Some of the stuff in here is incredible, some really great! I do not have a layout, I have an oval that goes around the Christmas tree and if I fancy running any trains at all, I but some foam mats down to keep it off the carpet and just have a bit of a running session. I am super jealous, I hope to put together a shelf sized layout at some point but even then I lack the creativity and steady hand to achieve anything like the examples here.
  9. Hello everyone Firstly a little about myself I have recently become a model train enthusiast, I am not what you would consider a serious modeler, however I would love to put together a layout at some point (space allowing). For me it started with purchasing the Coca Cola Christmas set, for it to run around the Christmas tree, as I put it together I had a flashback to doing it as a child (with a Thomas and friends set). A fact that I had completely and utterly forgotten about, it was almost like a repressed memory. It rekindled my interest almost immediately and I now have 18 locomotives in just over a year of collecting. However today I am not writing this for my own benefit, I am instead writing on behalf of my friend who has a little train obsessed boy who is fighting Neuroblastoma. It is an uncommon/rare form of cancer that affects young children, if any of you are football fans you may recall Bradley the little boy who became friends with Jermain Defoe. It is that form of cancer which is now threatening to take Teddy away, he is receiving treatment on the NHS but what he really needs is a vaccine to prevent him relapsing. The survival rate is effectively a flip of a coin when you first get it but it drops to below 10% if you relapse and relapsing is very likely. If we can raise enough money we can however get him to the US for a vaccine which will significantly increase his chances. He has just turned 4 and needs help to raise funds for this treatment. I am therefore asking for any help you can offer, whether you can help raise awareness with model train clubs, heritage railways, post on Facebook/Twitter or if you can donate yourself. Any help at all will be greatly appreciated. His fund raising page can be found here https://www.solvingkidscancer.org.uk/children/teddylichten/ Or you can search “Teddy Lichten + neuroblastoma” His family is also regularly posing updates on this facebook page, you can see he has recently been in a cab of a train running from Brighton to three bridges: https://www.facebook.com/TeddyBigC I am really sorry that my first post on this forum is such a depressing one but I hope we can turn it into a positive by helping Teddy get the treatment which could save his life. If I have posted this in the wrong section of the forum please feel free to move it. Also if there are other forums, social media or even a youtuber who you think would willing to help then please do let me know. To add something of a bit more general interest I attach a picture of my March 1955 Trix locomotive, which I adore despite not having a three rail track to run her on. My display is a bit on the eclectic side of things...
