  1. A few of the exhibitors and traders are coming with me for a drink after the show on the Saturday eve from 5.30pm to about 7pm in the centre of Stamford at the gorgeous 13th century inn, The Tobie Norris, 12 St Pall Street, PE9 2BE.  It serves numerous guest real ales  and recommended parking is at the nearby North Street Car Park, if having a Cola.  Any last minute local show goers who fancy popping along, love to see you.

  2. The venue is at the edge of town so hopefully there will be lots of on street parking around the school.  Maybe worth doing a Google map search of local roads to see if any parking restrictions.  I don't know venue but I did do the same search to find parking Sat eve in the centre of the town to get something to eat and find any live music venues.

  3. I am taking Brief Encounter monochrome to this years two day show, really looking forward to it

  5. I took 'Brief Encounter' Monochrome to Belgium last week as invited to MOBEXPO 24, no problem. But I can get the whole layout in an estate car and don't need a  van.    I stopped at customs and had my invite and return ticket and even future UK shows listed to prove I am taking it out of UK for two days and they just opened the boot, asked if the model was set in WW2 and said it looked nice and then waved me on.  I think it helps if not using a van.

I got asked the question about customs a lot at MOBEXPO - thing is, what I took from it is that they really miss having UK layouts at the European shows  - so if you can go, go - just take a car if possible.

  7. A fantastic weekend at the Ashford Festival of Railway Modelling 2024 – with over 40 layouts and spread over three venues. The event was organised by Fred Garner and AIMREC, and included Tracks Across the Spectrum, a mix of fascinating exhibits influenced by the link between railways and autism. Great to see some gorgeous layouts making their debut – Joganji River and Asham Cement Works - and some special exhibits lovingly restored by AIMREC – Wishton and Crannoch - as well as old favourites, Lenham and Kingsnorth.

  9. Watering down ballast before applying was something I was always taught to do and even have a small dedicated spray bottle for that purpose. However yesterday in a rush to finish a section on my new exhibition layout, I forgot to do this process and just went striaght to pva, water and washing up liquid and found it gave same results as with the water spray down first. Point is, is this extra step really necessary?

  10. There's a growing number of women getting interested in model railways - but women in the hobby are still in the minority. I wanted to find out what's stopping women getting more involved in railway modelling and spoke to some amazing women in both the hobby and industry, including the executive director of the most famous model railroad museum in the US, and the woman behind Bachmann's fabulous LNER Thompson Teaks.

    A huge thank you to:

Michelle Kempema: Executive Director of the Colorado Model Railroad Museum

Lucy Dormont, Social media and marketing manager for the National Model Railroading Association.

Louise Oliver, Graphic designer at Bachmann Europe

Railway modellers par excellence: Maggie Gravett, Gilly North, Carol Flavin and Rachel Harris

And to Zara and Kath - an inspiration to young women railway modellers everywhere.

  11. 20 hours ago, The Stationmaster said:

What a superb show - probably one of the best collections of top quality layouts I have ever come across at a single show (including some of the 'really big national shows').  As my daughter said (several times) it was a show where there were numerous 'best in show' layouts to choose from.   Shame about the fire alarm this afternoon (Saturday) but one advantage was that if you got back in quickly you could chose your spot at some of the busier layouts where the aisles were rather too narrow!

The arrangement of the exhibition was obviously dictated by the spaces available but one you got used to finding your way around and made sure that you kept on looking in every doorway as you came to it we didn't miss any layouts.  In fact the one or two layouts to a separate room worked out to be quite a good arrangement provided the room was crowded - far better than narrow aisles that you get at many shows.  As ever great to meet and chat with various folk we know and see some of the developments on various layouts.

The drawbacks?  No cakes and a limited selection of foodstuffs on offer - needs some thought for next year maybe?   The arrangement of layouts in the sports hall seemed a bit hit & miss with narrow aisles in some places and huge gaps in others - maybe the floor plan needs some thought for next year?   Possibly clearer detail in the guidebook re smaller rooms etc but I can see the possible difficulties in doing that.  Incidentally the guidebook is of superb quality - one of the very best I have ever seen given away at a club show.

One unusual feature was the relatively limited trade presence and I hope that doesn't affect the viability of the show, especially with what both daughter and I said had a reasonably priced entrance fee to see the layouts in just one of the several buildings used for the show.

Good to read that they'll be at the same venue for another two day event next year.  And I hope that it will, as we saw today, also appeal to families with younger children.

PS having one rebuilt eye and one unrebuilt eye I found that if I used the unrebuilt one on its own I could actually see some hints of colour in parts of the delightful 'Brief Encounters' layout!!

It was great to meet you at the show Mike!
