  1. I took 'Brief Encounter' Monochrome to Belgium last week as invited to MOBEXPO 24, no problem. But I can get the whole layout in an estate car and don't need a van. I stopped at customs and had my invite and return ticket and even future UK shows listed to prove I am taking it out of UK for two days and they just opened the boot, asked if the model was set in WW2 and said it looked nice and then waved me on. I think it helps if not using a van. I got asked the question about customs a lot at MOBEXPO - thing is, what I took from it is that they really miss having UK layouts at the European shows - so if you can go, go - just take a car if possible.
  2. I attended an amazing model railway show last week just outside Antwerp. As the only British layout there, I was really looked after by the locals, plus this region has Belgium's biggest model railway club at over 750 sq m and 150 members

  5. A fantastic weekend at the Ashford Festival of Railway Modelling 2024 – with over 40 layouts and spread over three venues. The event was organised by Fred Garner and AIMREC, and included Tracks Across the Spectrum, a mix of fascinating exhibits influenced by the link between railways and autism. Great to see some gorgeous layouts making their debut – Joganji River and Asham Cement Works - and some special exhibits lovingly restored by AIMREC – Wishton and Crannoch - as well as old favourites, Lenham and Kingsnorth.
  6. Loved your layout - I've included it in my show highlights video!

  8. Bit of a Easter quiz, what is this wagon, what is it used for and who made it?
  9. Watering down ballast before applying was something I was always taught to do and even have a small dedicated spray bottle for that purpose. However yesterday in a rush to finish a section on my new exhibition layout, I forgot to do this process and just went striaght to pva, water and washing up liquid and found it gave same results as with the water spray down first. Point is, is this extra step really necessary?
  10. Lots of questions answered in this video, enjoy!
  11. Looking forward to this show and coming Saturday and having a day off from filming shows and just coming to enjoy all the layouts and meet old friends and a few new ones.
  12. There's a growing number of women getting interested in model railways - but women in the hobby are still in the minority. I wanted to find out what's stopping women getting more involved in railway modelling and spoke to some amazing women in both the hobby and industry, including the executive director of the most famous model railroad museum in the US, and the woman behind Bachmann's fabulous LNER Thompson Teaks. A huge thank you to: Michelle Kempema: Executive Director of the Colorado Model Railroad Museum Lucy Dormont, Social media and marketing manager for the National Model Railroading Association. Louise Oliver, Graphic designer at Bachmann Europe Railway modellers par excellence: Maggie Gravett, Gilly North, Carol Flavin and Rachel Harris And to Zara and Kath - an inspiration to young women railway modellers everywhere.
  13. It's International Women's Day and I've had the real pleasure to talk to some incredible women all over the world involved in the model railway hobby and industry - video coming soon.
  14. I built and now exhibit an exhibition layout called Brief Encounter Monochrome
  15. I am taking Brief encounter to Belgium for a show, very confused as it states that a oral confirmation is accepted at customs for professional items going to a commercial exhibition which is not to be sold.
  16. Brief Encounter is my 11 foot by 2 foot OO gauge end to end monochrome layout based on the David Lean film and designed for the exhibition circuit. The concept behind the layout was to recreate the evocative atmosphere of the black and white era of film, with a railway station and, of course, steam trains at the heart of it. Located Tonbridge area, 2 operators and transported in 1 car Needs 2 x 6ft tables email modelrailwayquest@gmail.com The inspiration came from watching Brief Encounter for the very first time and realising that the train station and train was as much a character of the film as the lead actors. It also presented an exciting challenge I haven’t seen in any other layout – to create a layout completely in monochrome. The layout has four lines and is laid out in four sections. To the left of the layout is a raised area which holds the RAF base. Although the film makes no mention of the war, it was filmed during 1944 and 1945 towards the end of World War 2. This in itself presented various logistic issues for Lean, and I wanted to reflect that in this layout. This section also holds the fiddle yard underneath. The tracks are DC shuttle controlled with SS2A BLOCKsignalling controllers with a manual Gaugemaster controller override. The second section includes a street scene with shops, a cinema and a church. The cinema is an integral part of the layout – it’s where the main characters Laura and Alex met for their clandestine dates. All the structures along this section are modified kits, and I’ve had some fun recreating signage that nods to the 1940s era but also includes a little humour.
  17. Everyone setting up for Abrail 24. Apparently over 900 advance tickets sold already. It’s going to be a good show. I’m with Brief Encounter on the 1st floor of the ASC building next to Bottom Works Sidings and Hauteluce. Come and say Hi!
  18. Delighted to add Kingsnorth by Phil Lambkin to the list of fantastic layouts at the Sevenoaks Model Rail Show.
  19. I will be coming with BRIEF ENCOUNTER monochrome model railway as a last min entry plus doing some filming of the show which like past show videos will include some dodgy sourced facts about the town of course lol
  20. How to make three types of fences for your layout - perfect for N, OO/HO and O gauge. Simple and easy - for beginners and intermediate level, ideal for modern industrial, garden fencing and rural field fencing.

  22. Hi Geep7 Great you had a good time at the show - and Horsebridge Wharf received the attention it deserved. A fantastic layout. Unless told otherwise by the exhibitors on the day, I use the official show guide to credit layouts in videos, so it's a shame Clive hasn't been given the credit in the brochure itself. I'll see what I can do to amend it.
