I first visited this thread a year or so ago as I was looking for information about a layout I wanted to build. Having grown up in Cheadle I was always fascinated about what life was like in the era when my Dad was a kid. Anyway I found this publication on ebay and it had a feature on Cheadle CLC Station which I thought I'd share.

Thanks so much for the info. My "prototype" is late 1950s south Manchester so I will assume that if I want some green engines its best I stick to Jubilees, Scots, and a Britannia.

Very simple question: Some Standard Class 5 (and 4s) are green and some are black. What determined this? Was it based on the region they operated in or was it based on other factors?
