Interesting video. I really hope we don't have another packing fail in progress.... though perhaps the fact that OORail's 5-car set was airfreighted from Hong Kong to the USA means it will not be typical of the ones arriving here by sea?

Maybe the packing issue with this early set is one of the reasons the date for the rest slipped?

Join lines are unavoidable but I was thinking for a while now apologies if this has already been mentioned on here I haven't seen it if it has. Anyway about the join lines on the DTS' what if they had or they were personally applied the final InterCity APT-P logo with the APT in red with the red stripe perhaps that could make the join lines less noticeable.

Surely join lines are only unavoidable and need to be masked if the chassis is bowl shaped (cheaper and easier to engineer) if it is flat and the sides cover the “eye” line then the join line is underneath, staring at the track! I appreciate this prabably means a metal chassis so extra cost.

Dear, oh dear, a fundamental misunderstanding of what it's all about on the Hornby TV programme tonight. :nono:

The guy with the model shop demo layout marvelling at how well his 5-car APT set went round the (extremely sharp...) bends 'It must be the tilting system that helps it go round so fast of course'

WRONG! The tilt system's got nothing to do with it, either on the model or the real thing!

Oh well tv licence to make it up!

still great to see an hours programme dedicated to the new APT model! Even if it is only on Yesterday!

Ive been enjoying looking at the pictures here of the New APT ( thanks all ) and have some questions (1) How do they compare looks wise to Hornby's Originals,of which i have a Set .(2) Can the current  Power Coach  R3948 couple up to the Original Trailers and (3) i have thought of Transplanting the Motor Gubbings  from said NDM into the Old version, the Coach is mint but the Ringfield Motor is kaput to put it another way, would it be worth the time and expense ? thanks in advance  Paul.

Regards the old version ndm, i think there are better ways to replace the motor, people have i believe used eurostar bogies successfully. I have 2 to do, and i intend to use “Hornby X9298 Class 35 5 Pole Drive Motor Unit & Wheels” i have the replacement units and they fit perfectly ( they look like a 5 pole version of the original to me) i do have one challenge, in that the NDM  bogies are screwed to the motor assembly as is the plastic holder for the panto. I need to work out the right size and source a decent drill and tap. I guess others on the forum have done this in the past? Alternatively i could glue the assembly together but that would make maintenance a real challenge.

thus far  one of mine was a tight enough push fit for a test run, which went really well.

Indeed, I've just had a look at our four packs, all ok it seems.

In worse news, the Hornby website is now saying winter 2022 for the seven car set!  Plus our Hornby rep has assured us that one of the power cars is a dummy, so we may have a wait to see if one can shift 14 cars.

    Kev.

When i saw that a couple of weeks back I rang them to ask, I was told the 7 car set is currently expected Jan 22. Which i guess someone thinks is winter 22, although winter 21/22 would be clearer. Still fingers crossed.

now i need to get all my coaches our and see of they are ok, fingers crossed again…..

Not in this case, it looks to be coming through the gap between the bodyshell and chassis.

    Roy

How about tape on the inside to cove the gap but only fixed to the half with the lugs, like a short flap?

To me the obvious place would be to remove one of the toilet screw mounts and leave it with just 3. With the clips I'd assume it'd be ok. I'm honestly not sure I can be bothered. It looks good from the outside with the exception of the pantograph that I would happily paint myself.

The open corridor ends creates a nice simple opportunity to wire the train throughout if desired.

    1) looking at the photo of the RL panto it appears to be an aluminium base with a painted steel panto fitted to it, so i guess painting the plastic part will be fairly close? I can’t really see how Hornby could have better modelled the panto other than a better colour finish on the top part? All “white metal “would be equally as wrong?

    2) i dont know much about capacitors, but does anyone know if i wanted to make a marginal improvement to the look is there heat generated or would it be ok to put a thin card “mask” between the windows and the cap, either in black or colour coded to reduce how obvious it is?

He has history for not liking people having an opinion. He had a good rant about adults liking McDonald’s once when it was pointed out you can ask not to have sauce etc.

Oh can you ask not to have sauce then?

Received mine and I'm really impressed, aside from the capacitor position. They look fantastic - excellent finish, colours and shape and the glazing/windows really excellent. The only other thing is the pantograph which I'm scared to raise. The body work though is truly excellent.

The alternate (“high speed” ) pantograph should be available a spare ( i think the one fitted was the original testing panto as in the pictures Linked above) , but as yet Hornby have no stocks. When they do i was thinking i might want to get a spare, just in case….

I have asked Hornby why the thing is there and for some helpful guidance on opening up the coaches, so far they have clarified why the capacitor is there …, I have spoken with the development team on this, they have informed me that due to the tilting although not ideal they no other choice on the fitting of the capacitor.…

    we shall see

Feedback on coach opening from Hornby …to release the coach body from the chassis you will need to remove three screws  from the under side of the chassis , there a 3 clips each side of the body ( 1/4 points front and back also mid point) insert a thin blade until you meet the clip then lever out to release…

i seem to recall this is similar to the older version?

I have looked at that and this is what gives me the worry. There is no discernible gap between the body and chassis by which to release the six clips shown in the diagram. Unlike many coaches / locos where you can work from below the chassis, the join is part way up the bodyside.

Weird process from Hornby shop, no shipping confirmation by email, found it on the order in my account. Shipping updates have sat ominously with a status of "Order placed" on Hermes site since 17/10, no further movement which probably means they have lost it!

Have you tried downloading hermes app and checking , i found a bit more info there for mine

Anybody managed to separate the body and chassis on any of these? I have been looking at the instructions for removing the NDM body and there are six clips between body and chassis. I don't see any obvious way in which to insert anything into the gap to ease them apart.

    Roy

There is an exploded diagram of the dvt in hss 456 on the Hornby website ( look at documents associated with the sets or ndm)

  14. I see the NDM comes with the standard panto. (Oh no it doesn’t)….. (Oh yes it does). And you’ll be surprised to learn “an alternative pantograph is not included with the APT, the part number for the High Speed pantograph is X7769, we are currently out of stock of this part and awaiting delivery from our supplier “

hope the supplier focuses on supplying the 7 car set first!

    How about….”damn that’s sloppy design engineering” ? :D

Seriously though, in a lit coach that cap is unforgivable really.

Actually I think sloppy is being kind, I guess we’ll all be taking a look at tweaking when ours arrive

Thanks for the instruction sheet- I wonder if I can get hold of those power car couplings as a spare to retro fit the older coaches as they look a similar fitting to the bogie as the old model.

Well I think they are a little shorter than the originals but I suspect something could be done. There are spares in the pack but they all look like the same half of a pair.

The ndm runs great though with couplers off! Rolling january

  17. Just had the next coach pack notified as available.

I checked with Hornby who confirmed the main set is still showing as only available January

as far as testing is concerned I expect to figure a way to do this similar to how I have tested the 80’s NDM’s ….. with the help of a strategic elastic band support for the coupler

as far as paint match is concerned I’d have to check how well matched the BR versions were, I suspect some matched better than others

    ARRIVED!

Well, just had payment taken for - BR, Class 370 Advanced Passenger Train Non-Driving Motor (NDM), 49004. So APT items are starting to arrive!

Hey yes, mine too, although i got an email to say there was a payment issue, probably because it was so long ago, anyway you only get a week to update it so check your emails if you have an order in.

also does anyone know if the couplers are the same as the old 80’s version? Otherwise the ndm wont be running till the full set arrives :-(

  19. Well i just rechecked and  like Royaloak i get the £89 etc price set. I suspect that its all about tax and where the website thinks you are. Perhaps  John is seeing a price without uk vat (20%) but with austrailian sales tax?

interestingly i am at present cruising off the NZ coast, but using a maritime link, so my ipad probably rembers where i usually access the site from.

The following list I cut & pasted from Hornby's "New for 2020" on the first day it was listed. It would appear that the RRP has dropped since then,Eg the coach packs are now £82.49

Ignore the yellow high light its just what I've ordered

    image.png.5d2b9112324947010c7b9e39edbcd741.png

About the only information not clear is the nose colour. IIRC a previous poster asked Hornby & the 7car set has a black nose & the 5 car set  is Yellow

This chart was made from the above information & has appeared on the last previous Page & near the beginning of this thread Page 5

Hey john, useful post, thanks. I just checked Hornby website and the rrp still seems in line with your original list ( eg £89 for two coach set etc) i see some resellers are offering discounts, but cpuld not see any lower direct Hornby pricing, or working discount vouchers ( today or when i ordered mine!)

    have i missed something?

Thank you for this!I remember a copy of Railnews, from October 1980,that had a pull-out special on the APT that ran to about 8 pages, and had diagrams of full trains. My Uncle bought me it home from where he worked as a fitter at Finsbury Park about 2 days after I bought the Hornby set.I wish I knew what happened to it.

Hey Guarded is this the one?
