Those under the canopy shots are just amazing Tim. Fantastic modelling.

    Agreed

I have to keep reminding myself it is in 2mm. I’d be more than happy with similar results in 4mm!

Plus I find the dedication over such a period inspirational.
    Keep on buggering on! :good_mini:

  2. I may have missed it but is it possible to buy a subscription nowadays using a new fangled Debit or Credit Card? My super special all singing all dancing “modern” bank account no longer provides a cheque book!

  3. You’re all wrong.

I’ve seen photos of Borchester station and it’s environs. It’s pure LNER/ER. Locos, carriages, wagons not to mention buildings and infrastructure. So it must be a long incursion into the area by the LNER. The GWR must have been spitting feathers ! :D

I have used DCC and the system on Buckingham is much more satisfying and enjoyable to work. You don't need to know which loco has been put on a train and which direction it is heading in and the locos do swap around a lot. Asking the operator at the other station "What loco have you put on and is it chimney first?" is hardly prototypical. All we do is accept the train that is offered, set the points and signals and turn the controller.

Thanks. The wiring is not actually that complicated. It looks bad in the video because Peter Denny was constantly altering the track layout and the signalling, which needed the wiring modifying to cope with new moves without messing up old ones. After submitting the video, I did wonder if I should have added a wiring diagram showing how a platform at Buckingham is wired as it really isn't nearly as bad as the real wires make it seem.

If one would be of interest, I will put something together.

Yes, an example wiring diagram would be very much of interest.

Especially the signal and calling on signal, and how they interact regarding power to track, or part of the track. I think I’ve figured it out in my head. Or at the least how I might do it. But a worked example would be much appreciated.

One of the reasons why I was more than happy to take on the task of looking after Buckingham was because I had visited the layout several times, including a visit only a few weeks before Peter Denny passed away.

So I had seen, with my own eyes, that although it was clear that maintenance and cleaning had perhaps not been kept on top of in his later years, the layout was generally sound and working quite well.

Although Covid has put a temporary stop to the once or twice a week visits by friends to run the layout, I run it "solo" a couple of times a week and it is still hugely reliable and great fun to operate. It still astonishes me to think that in December, the earliest loco will celebrate its 75th birthday.

I have created a bit of a video presentation on the control systems of Buckingham, which will form part of the forthcoming Scalefour and EMGS online events (the first one being this weeked) and although it was almost impossible to drive trains, film and talk at the same time, there is a shot of a train running round the layout. All the locos run like that. Inching a shunter up to a wagon or carriage until the buffers gently touch, or gradually accelerating smoothly away are normal parts of the running.

Excellent video. It explains a lot regarding how the track power is supplied. The idea of no section switches appeals greatly as does the fact the model is being run on, or to, prototypical principles. Less appealing is the “complicated” spaghetti of wiring which appears necessary. Much cogitating ahead for me I think.

Next steam loco is likely to be the LSW C14 but these aren't usually planned as such - more a case of spin off from my own work. There is an overall plan for diesel and electric locos but it is likely to change at any moment depending on all sorts of circumstances.

As a 2-2-0 or an 0-4-0? Or able to be built as both?

Either way put me down for one please.

  7. I seem to remember reading about the designer’s “optimistic pencil”, possibly in a Barry Norman article or in his book? This I found to be true in my many attempts to scheme out Iain Rice’s Harestone plan. As drawn by IR it is approximately 6’6 x 1’6 max. Using the Anyrail design program and PECO Code 75 (giving a reasonable platform length) gives a minimum length of 7’6. Moving to C&L in EM gauge (my intention) gives an absolute minimum length of 8’0. Now 18 inches is an approximate 23% increase in length which is not inconsiderable in the scene of things regarding the intention of the original plan.

I wish I could master Templot as I would like to see Harestone drawn up on that to see if space could be saved by using custom turnouts etc.

  8. Slight thread drift, as I never saw it,  but a layout I found inspirational was called Eastfleet by a member of the Wakefield MRC which I think the member gifted to them. It was a circular layout of a harbour branch in the east coast. It just captured the smell of the sea and secondary route nature of the line. Was in Model Railways magazine I think. Late 80s/90s?

  9. And moving back to CF....
I’d be more than interested in seeing a video production.

And if I maybe so bold I’d like it to be similar to the Bradfield Gloucester Square i.e. a typical day in the life of with captions or voice over explaining what is happening.

Conversely I have seen more finger poking and Hand of God action on OO  layouts at shows than I have on P4 layouts.

As the owner and exhibitor of the London  Road LNWR P4 layout I was well aware of the populist view of P4 layouts and so put a lot of effort into ensuring the layout and stock performed well. I hope I achieved that reasonably well  but found that there is a section of this hobby who will go out of their way to criticise those that use P4 track standards and the models they make.

London Road is one of the P4 layouts I truly admire. Realistic movement/operation. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t expect a Jazz style service, time to admire the static modelling between trains is greatly appreciated. But I also realise you can’t please all the people all the time!

PS Is it merely coincidence that the P4 layouts I think succeed the most are all Pre-Grouping?

  11. I think subconsciously Heckmondwike was the layout that edged me towards EM gauge as opposed to S4/P4. On the two occasions I saw it there appeared to be much going on behind the scenes but very little seemed to run. Or so it seemed to this late teens/20 year old. On the other hand Dunwich always seemed to have movement and operation.

Ironic really as my modelling is best expressed as bucolic and P4 would probably have been a good choice. Too late now.

Looking at the full-sized mast, it tapers towards the top. I used paint brush handles to reproduce the taper. I always have a few brushes that I haven't cleaned properly and allowed to go hard.  I never throw away potential materials.

Certain chop sticks can make good masts as well.

  14. I hope no one minds if I post this on here. I admit to not having read this thread recently, so if it has already been posted I apologise. Also I have nothing to do with the fund apart from having made a modest contribution.

Seems a sad outcome for a significant figure of his day.
