DCC user since 1996. Good old Lenz system. Bullet proof. I think the secret of DCC systems is buying equipment manufactured by a DCC specialist manufacturer.
Back to the 37’s, I have been playing around with the heavy train, light engine and three different brake functions available within the V5 decoder and all I can say is that it makes driving it so much fun.
I prefer this type of functionality to sounds of doors slamming etc.

Likewise, I have been running DCC sound for longer than I care to remember. I have been using a Gaugemaster Prodigy Advance system for over 10 hrs now and find that it works well. I have had none of the issues mentioned in this thread with regards to cutting out, lighting issues etc. with any of the 37's I purchased, all sound decoders and speakers purchased separately and fitted by myself. I did have an issue with the first batch of decoders which was readily dealt with the Tech dept at Accurascale. Just saying!

I may be coming into this discussion at the wrong point (and missing the point) in which case my apologies, but surely the fact that almost every Accurascale 37 (the DCC sound fitted ones anyway) announced so far has sold out prior to the models actually reaching the UK, and people have been scrabbling to secure one of the few last minute available ones, suggests to me there is plenty of demand for them still.

I don’t know what Accurascales order targets need to be to make a particular version or livery viable or not, but they have clearly done their sums and it is working for them.

Bachmann must have done so too, even at their higher RRP price level.

I only have one updated Bachmann 37, sound fitted but not SFX, because I wanted that specific loco. Accurascale are satisfying my needs with liveries which Bachmann are not, unfortunately.

On a personal level, I would rather buy one brand new non-sound fitted Accurascale 37 than two second hand Vitrains models at £80 each. Unless I wanted the challenge (and additional costs) of detailing and bringing them up to comparable standards. Something I used to enjoy as a teenager but not now 30-40 years later. Perhaps this is where the collectors market is influencing second hand prices? The collectors market is something I just do not understand! As good as the Vitrains model was for its time back then why would you buy a 20-odd year old mechanism and tooling now?

Perhaps the suggested supply of decent secondhand models is just people off loading older ones to pay for the new Bachmann or Accurascale ones, or a lack of storage space, rather than a lack of demand for Class 37s.

I too am waiting on my first updated Bachmann 37 from TMC but only after having purchased several superb Accurascale examples. I also have a few Vitrains Large/Logo versions which I weathered and super detailed and  were most reliable performers on the exhibition circuit. I don't intend to purchase anymore second hand versions or Bachmann old school as I think that Accurascale still have more to come.

Missed out on the DCC Sound 6704 so decided to retrofit the DCC Ready version. Unfortunately AS are currently out of stock of the Accurathrash speaker, so I decided to try ESU's current 4 ohm Passive Radiator speaker, which is exactly the same size including in respect of the lugs and slots at the end, which means it can make use of the AS speaker clips to secure it. The only problem I had was that the circuit board in the loco had a slight convex shape, and is consequently higher in the centre which shows up reasonably well in the first image. This meant that when the decoder and speaker were fitted, the removable roof section would not sit properly. However, this proved to be a simple fix with two small plastic shims slotted beneath the cantrail lip on both sides just to the right of the centre roof magnet in the first image, and which depressed the circuit board just enough to make it level. The second image shows the installation before final tidying of the wiring out of the way. The speaker comes with an attached lead with the correct size JST plug. The leads are a little long but neatly curl flat. The sound reproduction is very similar to the Accurathrash speaker with perhaps a little more top end; just enough to sound slightly different when run running two together.

I also purchased the new ESU speakers, both the large and smaller version. I had to sand a small amount off the base of the larger one as it measured 8.6mm. It gives a more of a treble sound and you can detect a hint more base from the smaller version. Much more to my liking. Still have to tidy up some wiring.

Thanks John, 609 now sounds as great as the others!

Anyone who knows me would know how I have strived over the years to get my 37's sounding how they should. And yes, each  and everyone to their own, as we all have our personal preferences. Mine is the full blown West Highland/ Far North Line versions. I have removed the Accurathrash speaker from 37 027 and the sugar cube and replaced it with two 25x25x7 wired in parallel and it sounds just like a 'bag o'

nails '. The way it should sound. Using the CV changes mentioned, also increased the volume, as if I needed to!

  5. Let me see if I've got this right. I made several CV changes to 37 027 and 37 043 to improve the running , moving off and sound volume. But, I had I had to return both loco's to Accurascale for a fault so I did a default reset, which I know now doesn't work. If I make those same CV changes, and save them, will I be able to re-load them if anything happens in the future?

Well that’s annoying, o got my chips sent back to activate flange squeal and then tried moving the dynamic braking to F2 using the list earlier. Well couldn’t get any braking at all! So I reset the decoder as normal and now the horn constantly sounds high/ low which I can’t stop and the lights don’t work ! Any ideas before I send it back again as it appears the factory reset doesn’t set it back to the Accurascale settings.

Had an occasion to return two sound decoders to Accurascale for re-blow and as I had made several CV changes thought I'd reset to factory settings. No, big mistake! as you say, low high horn won't switch off. Have informed tech team.

That’s great news Bill. Once it’s working, you’ll love the noise they make. I’m tempted to put more points on the layout just to run them through!

Seriously though, it’s the best sound file for a 37 by far.

    Cheers

Absolutely Eddie, there's a lot to like about this 37' . It just has the look and is right at home on a Scottish layout. I need to crack on with Laggan Bridge. I'm currently bogged down converting the Pop up Designs Thurso station, by God it's a challenge I can tell you!!!

Just to confirm, Bill, I’ve updated the decoders on the Lokprogrammer and the flange squeal works on all 4 locos for the WHL project. Need to do the DRS ones next.

    Cheers

    Hi Eddie,

Still not had a reply from ACCURASCALE, getting a bit p!!** off with them to say the least! If it's not too much bother let me know how you fixed it. Will also get one of my colleagues to look into same as they might spot what's wrong!

    Cheers, Bill.

Re the flange squeal issue, presumably it’s a firmware update that solves the issue? If so, I should be able to do it myself via my Lokprogrammer?

    Cheers

    Hi,

As I don't seem to be getting a positive response from Accurascale, well not yet anyway, would appreciate if you could point me in the right direction as I have a couple of mates who have Lokprogrammers.

Suggest you try speaking to them, the latest file fixed it for me on one of the two, the second decoder im waiting to come back from a friend for its reblow

    Hi,

I have been speaking to them. It was them that suggested I clean the sensor. My re-blow was prior to Accurascale contacting ESU so my fault still existed.

Yes.. reblow of the chip and it works a treat 👍

Mine was re-blown, so I believe , but that was before Accurascale announced that they were awaiting a report from ESU with regards to a fault in some sound decoders which was reported on here. They then we're going to contact those that bought decoders separately and rectify the fault!!!???

  12. Hi,

Did anyone who bought their Accurascale sound decoders and speakers separately and had issues with the flange squeal ever get the problem resolved? Because I haven't! The latest chapter has had me removing the sensor under the cab, cleaning with a cotton bud and finally passing a magnet in front of the sensor! No! Sorry! But that doesn't work either. NEXT!

Is that just the direct orders almost complete? Have the retailers (i.e RoS) got theirs on the way as well or is that the next big dispatch job for the warehouse?

It would be helpful to have an update for those who have ordered through the retailer. The waiting is wrecking my nerves, what with all this talk of ' completely sold out '.

Just to check are Accurascale still working on a sensor based solution? I'd really like to have the squeal using the senors rather than latched as I'm a sucker for the latest new feature.

    Hi,

I haven't had an explanation as to why they have arrived at this result but will query the decision as I have a second decoder with the same problem to be returned.

    Bill.
