  1. Does anyone know whether Rails of Sheffield intend to carry on with Hattons’ projects? I’m thinking of the unissued 4 and 6-wheeled pre-grouping ‘Gemini’ carriages. Will there be a second run of LSWR carriages if they do? Any news gratefully received.
  2. Thanks, Jonathan. Will give them a go.
  3. Thanks, Halvarras. I’ll give it a go in the morning All the best
  4. Mark, Photos attached. There seems to be a little play between the body and the chassis. It’s the strange sort of rivet on the underside that worries me.
  5. Can anyone please advise on how to ‘deconstruct’ a Lima Wagon Couvert please? I have acquired two in the standard brown, but wish to repaint these to represent the wagons of the Nord railway in 1914-1918. Any informed advice (this does not include ‘Try hitting it with a hammer’) would be very gratefully received.
  6. I am sure someone has asked this question before, but I cannot find it, trawling through previous posts. Does anyone know whether there is a manufacturer who makes the famous notices seen on the doors of covered vans on all the various French railway companies and, latterly, on the SNCF wagons please? These would be H0 scale. Any info or suggestions gratefully received
  7. Again, many thanks Jim. I really do appreciate the effort you’ve put into answering this. I’ m currently working on a Casualty Clearing Station from the First World War. As and when time and cash are available, I want to have a go at modelling a pared-down Port Richborough. I think that will see me out.
  8. Many thanks, JimC. Having little or no interest in the GWR ( I know, I’m a complete outcast for saying that), I haven’t got the books to research it. However, that sounds pretty definitive, so I shall just have to swallow my aesthetic horror and go with what you have posted. I’ll have to rob a bank, mind!
  9. Thanks bécasse. i would wholeheartedly agree with what you say. To be fair, though, I suppose the museum has painted it gloss to preserve its pristine appearance for as long as possible.
  10. So do handbags! Thank you for your very valid point. I think the manufacturers’ khaki is too light, which would stand out in almost every background.
  11. Caley, bécasse , Steamport Southport and Nick Holliday. Thanks to all of you for your replies. Many interesting and erudite points raised, lots to ponder on. I still maintain that the rtr companies are incorrect in making locomotives in khaki.
  12. Many thanks Martin, for the link to the NRM. Very interesting. One could easily get lost down a branch line of research. I’ve looked through all my reference books and magazines and, apart from the point made by Mr. Aves, I cannot find a single word which supports the khaki livery. I shall wait with baited breath for our fellow members’ thoughts on the matter. B.
  13. I am sure that I have seen references to this subject before on the Forum, but I have tried every combination of words that I can think of to find any previous threads and have failed dismally. There are a number of r-t-r locos on the market painted a colour which, being charitable, one must refer to as ‘Khaki’. I cannot find any historical evidence for this livery. As far as I know all locomotives operating in France and Belgium were painted black or dark grey. Does anyone know of a source which gives a definitive answer to this question, please? Many thanks in advance. B.
  14. AY Mod. I’ve now looked FTFY up. I withdraw the last sentence in my previous post. Apologies
  15. Thanks all. As you can see, Paul responded as soon as he had found his mobile! I don’t think I was expecting an instantaneous response, thanks AY. I was merely stating that there are often websites that appear to be operating, but which ultimately are dead, as the business has stopped trading (sometimes years ago). Like Redgate, I have no idea what FTFY means. If you can’t write it in full, it is probably beneath contempt
  16. I found a website of one P. J. Bambrick today who is, apparently, a professional creator of dioramas and backscenes. The infuriating thing about the web is when someone ceases trading, their details can remain on the web for years. i have emailed the gentleman, but if I receive no response, I wonder if anyone can give me details of someone else doing this? Many thanks in advance, B
  17. Haven’t had a chance to get back here for a good few days. Many thanks to everyone for their advice. I think I’ll save up for a rolling road, being the most economical on space. Much appreciated. Cheers. B
  18. Many thanks, Cypherman, ITG and Phil. Plenty of room for thought, if not for track! Your advice is much appreciated. B
  19. I have a number of 00 scale locos which have never been unboxed. They are an LNER J15 and some 0-6-0 and 0-4-4 tank engines. Now I learn they can deteriorate unless kept running. I have an old office desk which is 4 foot 6 inches long and 2 feet from front to back. Can anyone please tell me if that is sufficient room to build a basic oval track for running-in/ maintenance? Also could you please tell me how many curves and what radius they should be and how many straight pieces I require? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. B
  20. Thanks, guys. I guess there are almost as many prototypes as there are railway modellers. I live in hope that an r-t-r version will be forthcoming. Or that I win the lottery.
  21. Thank you, Jol. i have never constructed a metal kit, nor have i any experience of soldering, brazing or welding. I wouldn’t want to waste the money on an attempt. The reason I made the plea is that a representative from a relatively small, relatively new loco manufacturer expressed interest in my suggestion and if people don’t ask, they don’t get. (Except endless boring variations on Great Western locos, and heaven alone knows, we have more than enough of those).
  22. To be frank, I didn’t have the patience (or life expectancy!) to read all 77 pages of what I am sure is a very interesting and informative thread. As I saw back on page one, there are people like me, with an interest in shortish freight trains. I ‘spoke’ with someone at Rapido Trains recently who agreed with me that the Class 700 Kirtley outside - frame loco would make an interesting and worth model. He said he would refer it on to the high-ups who make the decisions. Perhaps anyone else interested in this long-service locomotive which covered a vast range of tasks and bore many liveries might put in their own plea for this to be added to their range. Thanks in advance and in anticipation.
  23. There seems to be two schools of thought about the livery of R. O. D. locomotives and the colour of rolling stock. More specifically, WDLR wagons are portrayed as being either olive dun, or a middle to dark grey. Bachmann wagons are grey, but then they have also produced locos that are khaki. Any ideas on the “correct” shade of grey for painting these wagons, please? Thanks in advance.
