Small contribution from Belgium of a freshly build winter / Christmas diorama Baseboard is a wooden serving platter of 80x25 cm with a topping of 5mm foamboard. Drilled some holes in it to put in Christmas lights to shine into the igloo’s interior. Rest of Christmas lights are strapped to the bottom of the platter for indirect light. Igloo is the half of a Styrofoam ball with foamboard bended to form the entrance. The flooring is parquet made out of wooden popsicle sticks. Rolling stock is a self-build cardboard locomotive and a slightly adapted open wagon with a wooden structure (also from popsicle sticks) to support the small baubles which are produced inside the igloo. For the locomotive we borrowed the chassis including motor of an LS Models French shunter. Cartboard material was recycled to make the body. The exhaust pipe is a lolly stick and the fuel tank a straw with endcaps made with a standard hole punch. Wooden trees are originally Christmas hangers from a discounter with wire removed. Tooth picks hold everything in place and allows for removal of igloo and trees. The snow took three attempts with Noch model snow. First with paint, second with Mod Podge both failed, as he layer of snow after vacuuming was too thin. Third attempt with PVA glue and spraying a diluted version afterwards luckily gave a bit of extra thickness to the snow layer and keeps it fixed in place. The built up of snow besides the track is a layer of repair plaster from a tube. The figures were originally destined to spend their short lives on top of a Christmas (ice cream) cake They needed a little surgery to have the pin removed which was attached in a sensitive spot. They all recovered well and are happy to spend their lives riding the train, spotting the train or making Christmas baubles.
