How about you add some more nice brass pipework (to the steampunk engine)?
Yes, brass soldering is surprisingly easy; the trick is getting it in place "just so" before you solder it!

Here's a jintybodge W.I.P., incorporating (so far) a Margate-era Hornby jinty, the smokebox front of one of these, the upper portion of a Shay cab, and some plastikard. (The bunker snapped off twice, hence the cab doors to provide some structural integrity). Yes, I suppose you could place it in the steampunk genre, but I prefer to call it an "alternate" locomotive.

I would advise just buying the Hornby RTR pug.

Well, I bit the bullet and bought myself a play-worn 4mt off the internet. Any idiosyncrasies I should know about regarding it and Dublo in general?

So, recently Steampunk locomotives have been a topic of conversation. Steampunk locomotives in general, and in particular those based on Hornby's 0-4-0 chassis.
I thought about it a bit, and the produced this crude, un-detailed doodle.
Insofar as this needs (or deserves) any kind of explanation, that's a bunker and a water tank sharing the back. Between the bunker and the firebox there is a mechanical coal feed - the problem with this chassis is that the motor and its mount aren't especially space-efficient.
I honestly don't know what I think of this - it might be hideous and stupid or whimsical and charming - I really can't tell.
Well, it's much better than Hornby's official steampunk locos, if that counts for anything. I'm actually interested in seeing this concept go further. This might provide some more inspiration. Those "grasshopper" locomotives seem very steampunk indeed, don't they.

"Bassett-Lowke Steampunk Models" are now pre-orderable on Hattons: https://www.hattons.co.uk/stocklist/3156865/1000588/1000640/0/bassett_lowke_steampunk_models_oo_gauge_1_76_scale_steam_locos/prodlist.aspx.

Here's an appropriately steampunk locomotive, which could even be built on a stock chassis.
The problem with steampunk is that its emulation of Victorian or Edwardian mechanical design is all too often extremely superficial and ill-informed, which results in not an emulation, but a poorly executed parody.
