I was a bit disappointed when I got mine out of the box.  The blue ones all look rather dark and dull in the various shop photos and nearly had me purchase a Bachmann 45/0 instead.  I'd say the dark colour makes the shape issue more pronounced too.  I'd hoped to purchase Medusa from Kernow but the dark colour and dusty weathering put me off.  They also want £39 extra for it over the standard model.  I went for a pristine example instead hoping the colour was better in the flesh.

Once I'd run it for a bit I decided to repaint it.  The blue would only get darker if I was to any weathering.  Here it is next to an old Bachmann 47 and difference is rather obvious.

The numbers are easy to remove with IPA and some cotton buds.  The blue is easily rubbed off too so be careful if you just want to renumber it.  The glazing is very firmly glued, I decided not to risk it and used Humbrol Maskol instead.

A few light coats of Railmatch BR Blue yielded a massive difference.  I added a blob of white to the mix on the last coat to give a faded look as I'm modelling 88/89.

Weathered the underframe, fitted a crew, applied transfers and a few coats of satin varnish.  The transfers are from Railtec with the unofficial name coming from Precision Labels.

Some weathering applied using washes, dry brushing and the airbrush.  I'm much happier with the model now, got there in the end!

A bit of black card behind the fan stops you from seeing straight through to the wires and circuit board.

Overall I'm quite happy but it took over 10 hours to get there.  Looking back the Bachmann version doesn't need a repaint and it's cheaper.  While I like the Heljan model I certainly won't be rushing out and buying another.

Nice work there. For me the correct shade of BR Blue is very subjective not helped by the prototypes often being filthy or bleached. By contrast I have a Bachmann 45 which I think has a shade of blue which in my opinion is far too turquoise. It's certainly far lighter than the shade of blue on my Bachmann 47 or mk2 coaching stock.

I'm actually in Grimsby, we had them fairly frequently on the Sheffield - Cleethorpes via Brigg line. I still remember the screeching noises from the sharp bend at Fish Dock Road. I think Cleethorpes got a bit of variety. GMPTE made it over I believe.

My Layout is set in 1991 at Saltfleet/Mablethorpe, on an idea that the East Lincs line survived.

Incidentally, when did they change the doors?

142s were regular performers on the Joint Line from Doncaster to Lincoln and Sleaford in the late 80s. I don't remember them going further south or East than Sleaford.  Our school train home regularly used to be a Neville Hill 142.

If you are going to repaint, then you might be better starting with the Bachmann 'blue' and re-springing it - the Lima 'Grainflow' livery has always sold well secondhand.

    Jon

The Lima model probably sells well because it is the most accurate. The Bachmann one is a different wagon design and the grainflow livery on it is fictitious...a bit like painting a deltic in large logo blue and passing it off as a 37...😉

  4. I have 6 Lima PAA wagons in the green Grainflow livery which I intend to detail. As this involves removal of the moulded advert panel they will need repainted. I don't see a retailer selling a grainflow green paint so I assume that this will involve using a close equivalent or mixing shades to suit.

Does anyone have a recommendation for an available shade of green that matches well?

    Thanks

    Simon

Almost everything on the layout is weathered. Including the signals. Digital photography always renders things differently to the human eye but the posts and arms are lightly weathered and so are the coloured lenses.

The latter reduces the intensity of the LED glare somewhat. It does not, however, render the green aspect as blue as it should be. Dapol fit green lenses of a totally incorrect shade.  I have yet to find a “fix” for this.

A very dilute drop of blue acrylic paint on the lens may well reduce the intensity and alter the light colour?

Hi Ian,  Yes Styrene sheet and brass wire with some Styrene rod used as well as I had lying around. I used a sheet and cut 5mm and 4mm lengths to form the main part of the roof.

    Cheers Peter.

I'm sure it will be a fine addition to one of my favourite layouts on RMweb. Is it based on anywhere in particular (Llandudno)?

I've been away from the railway for a bit as we opened up the garden under the NGS scheme for charity.

I was just doing odd jobs here and there. There was a warm day where I could open up all the windows and dig out the Sparmax spray gun and spray the track. That went pretty well, once I started using the right thinners... I tried using a piece of hardboard to get the wet paint off the rail tops, but it made an awful mess. So I made up a scraper from some scrap N/S rail to do it after it had dried. That took a few days... well nearly a week... A steel scraper did too much damage to the rail head.

Just catching up with your thread...

A Peco track rubber is ideal for cleaning spray paint off the tops of the rail.

But if I had to pick one or the other I’d take correct shape of body over buffer beam detail which is where Heljan is far inferior!

I suppose that maybe sums up the reality of British outline modelling....the buyer often has to decide which is the "least worse" option. I wonder if our German/American/Japanese friends have the same problem?

I opted for a 45/0 from Bachmann as I got tired waiting for Heljan. Ideally I'd like a 45/1 still so will wait and see what Heljan comes up with. Personally I'm a fan of Heljan running quality over Bachmann but like others when it comes to body shape I'll wait and see one in the flesh.

While waiting for the kettle to boil I looked it up too. The English and Welsh August Bank Holiday changed from the first to the last Monday in August on a temporary basis from 1965 and on a permanent basis from 1971.

In Scotland, of course, the first Monday in August is still a national Bank Holiday but that's different from local public holidays. For example, Glasgow Fair Monday is generally the third Monday in July (the start of the last two weeks of the month) while in Edinburgh and Dundee the Victoria Day holiday is on the last Monday on or before 24 May. These are not Bank Holidays though. Living in Edinburgh but working in used to get very confusing.

Over the last several decades the bank holiday situation in Scotland is probably even more diluted with less firms having a forced shutdown for local holidays, and more UK wide businesses (e.g. banks) observing the English rather than Scottish Bank Holidays where they differ for continuity.

Into the mix add a growing trend for private sector firms to not give mandatory Bank Holidays at all but just add the days to personal holiday allowances.

Milling/routing from below? (Using safety specs of course to protect the eyes and ensure you can’t see what you’re doing!)

    Does that help?

Oh, and Happy New Year for later.

Personally I would use the cylindrical Neodymium magnets. They require no milling or routing. Simply drill a hole in the baseboard to the same diameter (between the rails) and push the magnet in. If your hole goes right through the baseboard then you also have the ability to move the magnet if you wish by pushing the magnet right through and out to reposition elsewhere (as a tight fit means no glue is required to hold the magnet in position ).

Some details maybe, but not shape.

I'd agree the latest version (whenever it breaks cover) will likely be minor tweaks rather than wholesale changes of the body shape.

That said whilst the talk of a lack of curvature on the top of the door is valid the angle of that last prototype picture makes the curvature look very subtle indeed. If the real thing looks subtle will that translate to a 4mm model?

As always we will wait and wonder but for me I gave up the wait and have ordered the Bachmann  version for now.

Theres not much point putting a release date on anything at the moment. I think its going to take years to clear the current announced toolings. Theres only so much floor space in China.

Couldn't agree more. Given that it's now 2.5 years since the 45 was announced with little sign of progress of late, and with other new models announced in the intervening period, surely now is a time of consolidation rather than announcing more and more new models with dubious schedules.

Apologies for the radio silence on the Peaks. It's simply because we haven't had any updates from the factory, so there's been nothing new to say. A combination of Covid, Christmas, Chinese New Year and a backlog at the factory due to many production line staff not returning after lockdown has slowed everything down (and not just for Heljan). However, I have been assured that the next batch of Class 45 samples is expected to arrive for review next month, so hopefully we'll have something new to say then.

    Thanks for your patience.

    Hi Ben

Any further updates on the 45 schedule?

    Thanks

  14. It does look very good indeed.

Going back to the ballast discussion I would say it could do with blackening. All those idling DMUs and locos would have dripped oil everywhere over the years and it would have been more black than grey.

    Is your 116 a Lima 117 conversion?

    Nice layout.
