Cambrian used to have the list of the original pre printed wagon kits on their old website. Seems to have gone.

The list is still on the Cambrian website. Scroll down the first paragraph to "List of Liveries", which is a PDF file. We could certainly do with a comprehensive list of Private Owner companies, wagon types, kit manufactures and kits all cross referenced. I supposed the RTR wagons could be included too.  Big task, it would need afew people to work on it.

The situation at LNER is that our maintenance depots - Bounds Green and Craigentinny - were transferred over to Hitachi last December when the first Satsumas were due into service.

All of the maintenance staff were TUPE'd over with them, like it or not, mostly not from what I've heard, including the Tech Riding Inspectors, and even the Maintenance Controller sat in the LNER Control office is now Hitachi.

This was also behind the XC HSTs transferring out of EC to Laira.

Any news of Hitachi introducing Japanese practice yet and I don't mean issuing white gloves for the train crews. Why are the A/C units dropping offline?

Having thought about the issue, I believe the solution is to uncouple the units on the move in the Proof House area. This may need a few software modifications, but there is some history in slip workings and trains becoming uncoupled at speed. This would save station dwell times and the two units would still be able to share the same path into New St.

    :P

Interesting slant on an old operating practise. The East Japan Railway seen to connect and disconnect the Hayabusa and Super Komachi Shinkansens automatically without any problems though and the timetable is stricter there.

Japan seems to have had its major heatwave, with record temperatures, in May. In Hokkaido, the Northern main island, 40 trains were being cancelled every day, and the rest running under reduced line speed, due to the fear of buckled rails (according to the Straits Times). i.e. much the same as in the UK recently.

Talk about temperature ranges nearly 40C in Hokkaido in May and about -4C in January. Does anyone know how the Hokkaido Shinkansen  lines and the other purpose built Shinkansen  lines, cope with wide temperature differences or could point me toward something on the Web?

Not wishing to inflame the debate regarding OHE again, to "weather proof" and to improve general reliability would major investment be required (especially on ECML) on the OHE infrastructure?

  5. Service on TL GN is poor at the best of times so anything outside of their barely there planning and thats all folks.  Whos fault that LNER not accepting TL GN tickets?

Maybe one of the partners of WMT should be asked how to run a proper train service as they can run a service in the same temperature and humidity as we are having and the track is not slab style either. The UK is a laughing stock again - shameful.

  6. Off topic slightly, as you state you would like to use the standard 009 coupler, however if anyone wants to use knuckle couplers.

From Narrow Garage roll down the page and under Parts there are fittings to attach magnetic knuckle couplers. The mounts look 3D printed and the couplers seem to be Micro-Trans N Scale couplers. There are similar mounts on Shapeways.

  7. What a boring launch no cute character (person in suit) to promote the train, no special packed lunches being on sale in the shape of  the train, no inflatable cushions being handed out for the Standard Class punters to rest their bottoms on. It is supposed to be the "Japan-UK Season of Culture” but I didn't see anything to promote this either. I hope LNER haven't upset H as they are very honoured to supply trains to the country where railways began.

    As japan sees it.

I would expect all the railfans to have piled into the HST on the next platform. Yesterday, 16th this happened "JR East Shinkansen ALFA-X prototype hits 320 kph in test run in northeastern Japan" - just a gnats whisker off 200mph and they will be increasing line speed to 360kph. Line speed of the Azuma is 200kph on a railway with weeds growing all over it what an embarrassment.

  8. Because the law demands that you cannot replace one danger with another.

In other words the danger of being electrocuted cannot be swapped exchanged for the danger that you will knock your head open when you fall!

The law demands you fix the original problem - i.e. make it hard to climb the cables in the first place as then neither the possibility of electrocution nor falling will occur.

Put a flexible full width cover between the coaches simples. Oh hang on can't do that it might come off and hit someone at speed.

I don't envy the Japanese designers of trains for the British market."You want us to stop people climbing onto the train? Why would they do that we have given them seats inside" "Yes"  "Well just tell them not to like we do". A different attitude to following rules I guess.

You cannot remove all danger from some situations, so change the law in the long run. As for they lack of decent catering on some of the new trains, which is down to whoever wrote the spec, but the short term answer is buy the food before you get on. It's a pity food at stations costs too much.

Have the maker's fixed the alleged problems with the poorly shielded signalling system yet?

  9. The gap between the coaches gives the impression that the new owner has left a blanking piece in the box and has set the coupling adjustment to maximum for those sharp set-track curves. If you look at the N700 Shinkansen they have a special gap-filler piece between the coaches to improve streamlining in the first instance but there is no sign of ugly cable loops that look like the waste pipes on the back of a house.

  10. Ekiben (railway boxed meals) they look so beautiful. Come on LNER Next Gen and GWR let's have them over here and we can eat them on the Class 800s. Much healthier than the fried stuff and sandwiches served at our stations.

One day I hope to eat one on the way to Kyoto by  Shinkansen. :locomotive:

  11. It is amazing. People queue on the platform. The train pulls in exactly to the spot , the door is adjacent to the queue. The door opens up and people get in quickly but in an orderly manner . It really is fascinating. Such a disciplined society . Contrast that with U.K. with passengers scattered over the platform.

Indeed. Respect for other people. No talking loudly into cell phones on the trains either. Do another search for Japanese waste recycling - amazing..

You might think the Warley show is busy; have a search for Comiket the huge comic market that's held twice a year in Tokyo. The attendance is 550,000 over three days!

  12. I managed to get that earlier in the year totally by accident and wondered why everyone was photographing it at every station - and I do mean everyone! Particularly amazed that the front carriage was dedicated to an exhbition about the train and the anime, complete with two members of staff...

The anime involved (Evangelion) has a vast following and let alone the interest in railways is even more so than the UK. Have a search for the UK Class 800s units travelling on transporters from the Japanese factory to the docks. The streets were packed with local people watching and photographing.

Nearly every railway company has a mascot, hence the yellow creature above.
