Funny how its usually only stuff I don't really care about that gets duplicated.

I do have some Hatton's 6-wheelers on order, but only on impulse, and they aren't something I exactly crave. If there was lots of stuff coming out that I really wanted, I wouldn't have bothered. I haven't bought any of Hornby's imitations because the impulse had already struck and I don't consider them to be up to the standard I'm expecting from  the Hatton's ones.

It's funny how cascades work though isn't it? When Hattons announced Genesis I had no interest beyond actually thinking it was nice to see some pre-grouping liveries. Fast forward 6 months, Rails announce a Precedent in LNWR livery, and after pre-ordering within about 2 miliseconds I sat there thinking 'hmm, need something for it to pull'....

Suddenly, I'm back to Hattons for a pack. I agree with you that Hattons look better than Hornby, but given Hattons don't seem to be rushing to do the full brake in LNWR I might be taking up Mr Hornby on a baggage brake.

All possibly very true, but this and all related speculation are irrelevant to “Lion” as National Museums Liverpool are NOT part of the Science Museum Group.  NML is a NDPB sponsored by the DCMS, like the SMG, but they are completely separate charities.  (NML is the only national museum based completely outside London, because Liverpool’s museums were nationalised to stop the-then Militant-controlled Liverpool Council selling off the collections.)

To add another to the list - the National Museum of the Royal Navy - Portsmouth, Yeovilton, Belfast, Gosport and Hartlepool...

Why would any company need licencing rights over a 70 year old film containing vehicles already in the public domain?

Because, as I’ve said on the Hornby thread, everyone gets confused about copyright.

tv is 50 years after broadcast. Film is 70 years after the death of the last of a small list of principle people involved, headed by the director. Given TTT’s director died in 1999, without checking if any of the others died later, TTT isn’t public domain until at least 2069....

Must of changed it subsequently then as I do know that certain programmes which the BBC owned had come into public domain.

The first episodes of Doctor Who definitely did at the time of the anniversary. There was a lot of kerfuffle at the time when the BBC was trying to get around it by claiming that "remastered" copies should be classed as new content so they could keep the rights for an extra 50 years from that date.

One of the reasons a lot of the "classic movie" channels on Freeview exist is virtually all the content is out of copyright.

    Jason

Broadcast (I.e. tv) is 50 from date of broadcast- film is 70 from date of death as above, which is in line with authors.

I’m not sure it has changed actually, more that film is rated as ‘higher art’ than tv in law.

I'm pretty sure that the film will be out of copyright by 2023.

    Seventy years isn't it?

And that was only raised from 50 not long ago due to complaints from people who are still alive.

No - common misconception: UK copyright law:

Films are protected for 70 years following the death of the last of the following persons: the principal director; the author of the screenplay; the author of the dialogue or the composer of original music commissioned for or used in the film.

the Titfield Thunderbolt’s director, slightly unbelievably, died in 1999.

Wow, the sound of toys being thrown out of prams is astonishing. Hornby have clearly been working on this for some time.

It’s a personal thing, involving straws and camel’s backs. I’m not suggesting everyone needs to do the same. For me, regardless of how long they’ve been working on it, it’s happening too often.

It's not quite a not-Thomas situation. Since nearly all the railway equipment in the film had an existence independent of the film, the exclusive rights can only apply to representations of them in the context of the film, not otherwise. There's nothing to prevent another manufacturer issuing a model of a 14xx Class 0-4-2T as No. 1401 (or No. 1450), or of Lion, otherwise than as Thunderbolt, or issue a GW brakevan numbered W68740 - as has been done. So the exclusivity seems a little shaky.

But I trust Rapido are making full use of Simon Castens' magnum opus.

Although as you note, no one else can do Lion as Thunderbolt, and only one manufacturer will be able to do nice 1950s poster art Titfield Thunderbolt packaging (which, ironically, Hornby have done before).

as someone who will be buying entirely because of the film this pushes me in Rapido’s direction, and also leaves a nasty taste.

I’m not going to say I’ll never buy Hornby again as that’s cutting off the nose to spite the face, but immediately before writing this I did leave an instruction on my dealing platform to sell all my Hornby shares.

As a shareholder (albeit a very minor one) this is me done.

Bridgnorth on the SVR (also a cliff railway up the castle hill!)

The site of the Roman Fort in Manchester (Castlefield) is within sight of Deansgate and might have been visible from the L&M's station at Liverpool Road.

    Scarborough?

    Steven B.

The SVR also has an example of the station being there but the castle you could see from it having (since) gone - Arley.

ok, it was Victorian gothic rather than genuine medieval, but it had towers and battlements, and was visible from the station...

In the hope that this photo appears OK, I include one of a cigarette card inherited from my late father illustrating what appears to be a 6 wheel coach converted for weedkilling train purposes. Apologies for the indifferent quality but it is mounted behind glass with 49 others and inseparable. Curiously it appears at first glance to have lookout duckets at both ends though those nearest the artist seem to be cut off at the waist (so to speak). The card dates from the 1930's and is one of a series depicting 'railway equipment'. The train looks as if it might be GWR in origin but doubtless learned colleagues will confirm or otherwise and risk an off topic thread diversion. I post only in case it provides inspiration for someone with the requisite skills to try a model of it based on one of the current offerings (either Hattons or Hornby). Best of luck.

    Weedkilling train.jpg

I suspect the duckets at the near end have been cut down and then the remaining incorporated into the tank?

  10. Afternoon all, notwithstanding rule 1, did these ever get as far north up the extension as Woodford Halse? Seen plenty of pictures at Princes Risborough, but would love to be able to justify one on the Helmdon-Woodford other than in my own head! Bonus points if 1950s....

    Had my Clan cancelled too.

Will probably buy another Manor instead now rather than get a Clan

Funnily enough I’ve just used some of the Clan-cancellation-saving on a second hand County 4-6-0 (from Hattons)

given I model the Northants GC, and it was County of Northants, it seemed like a sign....

It’s a shame - there is no actual evidence that anything here is the fault of Hattons, but if it affects me getti by my model trains then I’m afraid that action must be taken.

thats £500 from my wallet not going to Liverpool at a time when I’m sure that they could use it.

as I said, my W1 is on order and has been for many many months without incident, but I shall be most miffed if anything happens

I love Clans, but I'm taking this as a sign that that £200 can stay in my pocket because I don't actually *need* one.

My A2/3 remains on order with them, and some Genesis coaches. The only other thing I have on pre-order with anyone else is a Precedent with Rails (where I'm hoping, perhaps foolishly, that being the 'manufacturer' I stand a decent chance of getting it...).

But not impressed. I don't know why really, given it's not the first time, but something's wrong somewhere isn't it?

  13. My clan's been cancelled.

If my Steady Aim* (ordered last year) follows then I'm going to be fairly crosser than I aim already.

*which I see Hattons are now showing as 'sold out on pre-order'

But would I buy another, yes I probably would and I wish I'd pre-ordered an A2/3. I'm eagerly waiting the rebuilt W1 in BR green now!

I'm eagerly awaiting my A2/3... are they still expected this month/imminently? Steady Aim E/E is the model Mr Hatton is supplying me with...

  15. I don't want to be the 400th person to ring or email them about this while they've got better things to be doing, so has anyone heard any updates on the resin loco kits side? I fancy a stab at an L3 but the last update was in 2019.

  16. Afternoon all - I model the London extension south of Woodford Halse in the 1950s. I’ve been head down on the LNER/GC side of things for a few years but mind is starting to run to interlopers...

I know about 28xx, modified hall, county and Grange... would anything else from the GW have been seen over that way in that decade?

  17. Hi all,

just purchased a lot of Killamarsh signal box that I’m going to kitbash a bit to work for the GC extension in the 50s and early 60s to represent the boxes at Woodford, and Culworth Junction. Not seen many/any colour pictures so what colour am I painting the box and any recommendations on the best paints for card/wood please?

    thanks

Well now, once upon a time there was a TV drama called God's Wonderful Railway and the title music was, indeed, a piece of Elgar, his Severn Suite, Opus 87.

But, yes, Elgar is evocative of England generally, but perhaps particularly places in the West, such as the Malvern Hills.

Definitely - those of us lucky enough to have grown up in the tight little Worcestershire/Shropshire corner of the Severn Valley are called home by Elgar. Housman too, on the poetry side.
