As a junior'ish modeller I created a 'flasher' which was tastefully hidden behind a tree....but often pointed out by the operators at exhibitions :)

I've had a piece of metal properly stuck in my eye once, I'd been wearing a face screen and was fine until I brushed the muck out of my hair. They put your head in a kind of vice in hospital with a big magnifier in front of it, so the probe that pulls out the bit of metal looks like a scaffolding pole. Not good.
My mother had one removed last year, she'd been due to have it done but lockdown got in the way, but it's apparently made a big difference.
I managed to get swarf in my eye during basic trade training...like an idiot. After seeing the M.O. and having the offending article removed I was told to wear an eyepatch. The Medical Commander saw it and told the MO to "take the damn thing off as we may be Navy but we're not bloody pirates" :)
I can recommend having your cataract removed. Absolutely amazing! Although all the colours look wrong now....white is REALLY white....!!- 9

Yes well sadly this isn't the case. Most military kit be that a tank or indeed a weapon is designed by idiots who have never been anywhere near a tank or a gun to a brief drawn up by bean counters none of whom have been anywhere near a gun or a tank and is made by people who came up with the lowest bid to produce the said bit of kit. At no time during this process is anyone who will have to operate or use the said bit of kit consulted in any way at all.
Regards Lez.
Didn't we
stealget the design for the Bren from the Czechs?- 1

I started with the SLR but once I became a 432 driver my personal weapon was the LMG, for those of you who don't know an LMG is a re-barrelled Bren, I loved it! You can sign your name in a target at 800 meters with bullets. Mine was built in 1943 and went up sword beach in 1944 as a Bren and was re-built in 55 to 7.62mm. Once I became a crew commander I had a Stirling which was as much use as an ash tray on a motor bike. The only way of guaranteeing to kill someone with it is to smack them over the head. You can fit it with a bayonet but as it's so short it's useless. In typical forces fashion as the vehicle commander, when on the move the drivers LMG is fitted to the commanders turret and you hand your SMG to the driver. Once you stop the driver gives you back your SMG and you give him the LMG to lug around. You couldn't make it up could you?!
Regards Lez.
I quite liked the LMG.
A little bigger, but we were using Oerlikon barrels from 1944 into the 80's

I've only fired a Sten once and I found it to be about as useless as the Stirling was at hitting a target but worse in terms of jamming.
Regards Lez.
I was given a Sterling once in place of my usual SLR. I didn't keep it long!
To hit a barn door you pretty much had to be next to it......- 1

Now the owner of a couple of these, early and late SR versions.
I couldn't decide either!

For 3ft English prototypes there's always the Midlands Ironstone Railways for a varied assortment of locomotive choices.
Pecketts at Scaldwell, Manning Wardles at Kettering, and a mish mash of manufacturers at Waltham, Eastwell and others.
No official passenger services, but some wonderful inspiration...- 2

No I'm not changing the thread title to "Aston On Clun, a forgotten Great Western outpost and other far flung corners of the old empire".....
I did wonder what I'd stumbled into....

What sad news :(
My condolences to his family.
I was fortunate enough to meet and talk to Iain many times over the years. In my youth, as a spotty teen with an interest in the light and esoteric side of railways and railway modelling, he was always helpul and informative. And he continued to shape my railway modelling inspiration, aspiration, and skills, over the many years since.
Rest in Peace Sir, you will be missed by many.

They look just the job in my humble opinion. I saw an etched tool set somewhere, perhaps Wizard Models?
I've used these, which I know are overscale, but look the part.

Severn Models also produce a set

Morning All,
Well we had an 'earthquake' in the area to the northeast at 2259 last night, nothing too severe obviously but enough to be noticeable, as whilst working on the layout, just sounded like something was 'slipping from off' the boards behind me and thudding onto the floor, loud enough to make me turn around and look any rate.
Just as an update too on current thinking on my way ahead.
You know that I have always been open when it come to my errors, many of which have been down to my initial lack of planning and forethought from the outset of Cambrian Street, the greatest error was pinning down the track before installing point motors, an issue which continues to dog my progress.
So having tried to use wire in tube, in varying degrees of success, mainly because I cannot get the control wire to access into the central hole or adhere onto the pip of the point - I have for now decided to leave well alone concentrating on the scenic side of the layout, which is providing me with my greatest enjoyment building the layout.
All remaining points will be thrown by hand for now as they are easily reached, however if any should fail over time as I replace them, the intention will (if the layout and me) to be replace it and at the same time install a motor?
Unless I can come up with an alternative method of attaching the control wire to the pip, then this will probably the best way forwards for me at present concerning throwing the points easily?
Regards always and stay safe,
Bob
How are you trying to attach the wire to the point?
I'm sure there are plenty of clever, er,....people, on here who can assist with a simple alternative method.
In the meantime I'm looking forwards to the next installment on the scenic side.
Keep on keeping on...- 1

Due to the lack buses and bridges to park them on, the stuka crews have gone off to The Kangaroo at the other end of the village for a stein or two.
They've taken the keys and put the Krook-lok on too, so it's stuck there for now...
Joined by the crew from the Prairie parked on the platform probably?

Looking good, the tones really give it that worn look, the only thing that jars with myself is where does the rainwater go? No gutter or drain in the road,
(and obviously no gutter means nowhere for the fag packets and crisp packets to go! )- 1

Nos da....!
Hope all are well...?
Here's a small step forwards, have formed up the base for the ground onto which the 'Railway Terrace' cottages are to sit and have fitted this into the section between Llangeitho Road Bridge and the turntable.
The cottages and corner shop will be formed up in a general formation as shown here......hoping to make up back gardens or back yards that abut the wall of the road bridge......
Regards always
Bob
23 Railway Cuttings in there maybe?
