But what are they?  Not everyone has time (or the broadband) for tedious online streaming.

Written details are far more useful to to the majority.

sorry, i'm not the type who remembers every little detail from a video that seemed to go one for an eternity (not that it was a bad one). Not everyone has the time to watch the entire video, but it literally takes less than a min to hover over the timeline of the video and seek out the part where the 4-vep was discussed.

It always baffles me why the Class 66 stays in the main range rather than moving to Railroad Plus - it would seem much more appropriate for it.

agreed, I have sent Simon Kohler more than 1 email about that in the last couple of months. I also don't understand why the Cl66 got a 21pin dcc upgrade? does a model like that really need it? it doesn't even have lights

    Hi,

It looks from the photos of the 4 VEP on the Hornby 2022 range web page that the roof ventilators might have been beefed up to a believable size. I'm not sure if the pizza cutter flanges have been reduced but there might be time for Hornby to correct those before production. I've not checked yet if the dampers are swapped round on the bogies.

The tech spec on the VEP says 3 pole motor yet I thought the original Hornby VEP had a 5 pole motor.

However the tech spec for the FLIRT also says 3 pole motor so that could just be an error.

    Regards

    Nick

I also wonder if the revised / new / modified tooling for the 4VEP is becasue it is going to have the headlight in the front door?

I must admit to being a bit puzzled here.

What is 'Railroad Plus?' It has probably been around a while and I just haven't caught up with the current situation.

And why is there a Class 31 in the 'Railroad Plus' range and also (seemingly) in the main diesel range? Is there something different in terms of the quality of each respective model?

(and why do we 'need' another Class 31 anyway - according to some correspondents -  is the existing one that bad?)

I also have no idea what 'Tier 1' means, but then again, I am probably just behind the times again on that one.

Finally, for what it's worth (not very much, I know), I am pleased to see the Sentinel 0-6-0 and am also tempted by the black 350 hp diesel shunter.

the Hornby railraod plus range is a range of railroad spec locos that have all the painted and printed details of their main spec range. Etched namelates are added where applicable. The cl31 you are referring to is the old lima cl31 with nem couplers, 5-pole motors and 8-pin dcc.

tier 1 refers to tier 1 retailers and mnodels that are tier 1 exclusive are only available to tier 1 retailers

Whilst I welcome with open arms the South Central (NOT Southern, the Southern branding was not introduced until the slammers had gone) liveried 4-VEP, we need to know exactly how much has been upgraded and amended from the badly messed up curates egg that was the first VEP releases which had numerous tooling errors and could not pull the skin off a rice pudding.

The eye watering price is about £150 plus too high if it is merely warmed over old tooling with a new motor in it.  Even if it were new tooling from the wheels upwards it is still way too high.

    So glad I moved to 7mm :-)

After a glance at the Heljan 47 and 56 (and going through various threads regarding their 37s, mk1 coaches etc). im glad i am not paying top dollar for models that are so obviously inaccurate from a design stand-point.

Hats off to accurascale, minerva and Dapol for giving the 7mm market proper models at a realistic price.

Heljan is the Hornby of the 7mm world.

Over on the Hornby page, and in pic above, there have been noises about Hornby updating their class 59, i'm wondering if Hornby have got something planned? They shot Cavalex down in flames with the retooled class 91, could they do the same to Dapol with the 59.

that was a railroad class 59

Equally Hornby are giving the impression of running scared. By breaking their embargo early implies to me that they are worried one of their flagship announcements is at risk.

Hornby lose either way. If their announcement comes after rapido, they'll be blamed for duplicating. Hornby is often blamed for duplicating the terrier to scare off rails. But the Hornby terrier was originally an oxford diecast project anyway (as I read in one of the mags)

Just seen some photos on Instagram on off the LNER Farewell power-cars. Extremely disappointing. Wonky printing, fuzzy borders, lining not fully attached. The silver around the lights looks very poor, hopefully just a one off.

This after 2 price rises and some delays, really worrying if Hornby want to do more BR Blue examples.

That's my order cancelled .It has been a disappointing year, both Hornby and Dapol have made a right old mess of their respective hst sets over the last year. I just want a nice hst set.

I’ve always found CMC are fine with pre orders. You can see what you’ve got on order when you sign in.

That is actually the issue that i am having. Some of my pre-orders are not showing in my order page. And i haven't cancelled any. Furthermore the orders that i requested to be cancelled, still show up.

    Hi

Please can you get in touch with us via telephone 01242 523117 or emailing us info@cheltenhammodelcentre.com so we can sort out what is going on

    Thanks

    James

Thanks, I've already sent more than 2 emails regarding the same issue over the last couple of months. Maybe I'll give it one more shot.

  12. Has anyone had any luck contacting cmc via their own website? I have tried using their contact form and their email both. I had a 5 pre-orders placed with cmc. The products have since come in stock and some also sold out. But absolutely no news from cmc about my pre-orders Or how to cancel them.

I'm not quite happy about their service and i have missed out on a few models now as they have sold out all over

I’m on my phone so don’t want to generate froth as I may not be able to pick up the correct detail unlike on a laptop, but I’m surprised no one ahas mentioned the what looks like an NSE 442 MBRSM in the background to the left of the A4/W1 EP - or are my eyes deceiving me? My initial thought was an APT vehicle but it’s too blue and a MBRSM matches the window layout better. Due to the pixelation I can’t see if it’s an articulated bogie or conventional. Can anyone on a computer help me out?

Looks like the apt to me

Cheltenham Model Centre has a fairly pixellated one on their website, it looks like a...  They may have made it up, just to tease people!

    I've pixellated it some more*

Its advertised at 11 quid btw.

    * I think at this point it could be anything, going in the wrong direction and the principle of propulsion may be moot too!

Hornby getting into the MINECRAFT theme..... nice!

Nov 1st I think (i didnt watch until a week later)

there was a Grey class 59 EP on the side of the test track in the APT testing episode. I was puzzled why.
The 59 is an Lima model, Hornby converted it to Railroad over a decade ago and its been in stock ever since.

As mentioned with the 66, and as saw with the Red 66 in the tv series, if they need to test one, all they need do is go to the store room and get one off the shelf, off the spares desk or where-ever, but they have access to them.

I cant think why they’d need an EP creating and sending from China, unless they've done something to it that requires evaluating, or its a new tooling.

    anyway its here…

Thanks for the reply, havent had the time to respond. I saw a similar post from you in the Dapol thread and shared my views there

It was in a very early episode.

an EP of a 30 year old model, which was upgrade several years back already, why would they need that ? - for any testing just grab a stock one, like they did with the 66… it was made for some reason, but was too far out of shot to get defintion.

it looks exactly like the current Hornby (old lima) class 59. All the grills are moulded on the body and the roof, the plastic buffers, the split snow plough, moulded headlights and lack of fine or separate details backs it up. Claerly not a new model or new design.

ep samples are quite a common feature even for old models. Old models often get minor updates like nem couplers, ancient 8-pin dcc functionality, lighting or more commonly new tooling slides to replace an older tool. a factory has to test a new tool. We have seen them do exactly what I described above with the hst.

The weights and pulling capability, motor control and lighting are so much more now,a lot more want them pulling full or near full scale length rakes. As in life theres more in real terms than what something looks like.

Hornby is more associated as a toy maker than making accurate scale models until the last few years as others like Cavalex,Revolution and Accurascale have stole the show.

I remember seeing a video on YouTube of a Hornby class 60 and class 56 pulling 20 - 24 coaches each. This was many years ago.

Can't find the video now. But I remember the class 60 being the territorial army one and the class 56 being an ews one

Would that firebox feature apply for all future new releases scheduled to be announced on January the 10th I wonder?

This may apply to the delayed, newly tooled Standard 2MT, which already has a metal boiler.

It maybe Hornby trying to standardise the firebox feature, which is a standard fitment on Dapol and Accurascale steam locos.

If what i read is anything to go by, then yes, all newly tooled steam locos will have that. It became a standard feature since their last big LMS loco retool. Princess Coronation class?

I have no idea when the std 2mt was announced. So I'm not sure about that. But hopefully the delay means an added feature.
