Amazing photographs, the black and white photography really suits those machines and the harshness of the South African landscape. And oh my, lots and lots of photographs of my favourite locomotives ever, the incredible Class 25 condensers. Hulking great beasts - and narrow gauge too! Not sure what I would do with it, but I'd love a model of a condenser. Thanks for sharing the link, Mike.

Thank-you, and now I'm wondering further 'what ifs?' Perhaps the LMS should have built locomotives for the Woodhead route - perhaps to bring coal to Merseyside. An electric locomotive comparable to the EM2s but with the styling of 10000/10001 is rather tempting. Or maybe British Railways decided it did need Type 3 diesels from the start and commissioned a small number of prototypes based on 10000/10001 but with the Bulleid styling. They might not have been pretty, but they would have been really useful engines - albeit inevitably cursed with faulty train heating boilers.

First time poster, but I've been inspired by some of the amazing ideas on this thread, so here goes... What if English Electric had addressed the visibility problem on their Type 1s by sticking another cab on a lengthened frame? IMHO it's not as pretty as the original and it would have ended up double-heading freights anyway so perhaps it's wise it was never built. Photoshopped from a pair of Bachmann images - just don't look too carefully...
