  1. Can anybody tell me how long the loading banks were at Penzance prior to the shed demolition in around 1987? I'm building Penzance station as it was in 1982 in n gauge.

Despite searching pictures to gauge the length in terms of coach lengths there isn't a shot anywhere which shows the complete length with any clarity.

I suspect the north side was slightly shorter than the south side due to the track curve on the south side and both may have held 5-6 Mark 1's? There again I'm not sure from pictures if that's short frame BG/GUV or passenger stock.

I'm hoping someone here can help?!

  2. Has anyone managed to model these in N successfully? While Bachmann do a single POS RTR, I can see that BH Enterprises do some kits for POS and POT. I'm hesitant to try these kits as I've literally no idea what is involved and there seems to be nothing on the web in terms of media to visualise kit building one of these.

    Ideas and inspiration gratefully received.

  3. Is there somebody who can explain the visual differences between BG vehicles for me?

I'm aware of NEA and NDV having different braking and different running speeds but wonder if this would be detectable on a model apart from the number on a 1980s layout?

Books and websites aren't too specific on BG's...

  4. Does this RU have an interior that I'd be able to remove and use to create an interior for the RBR 16xx I've created?

I'm reluctant to buy one for this purpose in case the interior isn't suitable or removable and none of the retailers have an image of the interior either.

Perhaps someone who has this coach could enlighten me?

    Thanks.

  5. Can anybody shed any light on the original interiors of the RMB first batch (W1803 is the one I'm modelling for 1982).

Unable to find any old interior shots or descriptions regarding decor and fittings.

    Thanks. Christopher

  6. Michael Harris talks about the colours of the Mk2 interiors in his fantastic book, but I'm unable to find any colour images of the as-built models.

Can anybody provide an image of the Mk2d FO in colour before they were changed to the Mk2e rust/grey moquette also shown here?

  7. What colour were Mk1 gangway doors painted? I'm modelling 1982 blue/grey era and I've seen both white and black doors in images and wondering if there was a standard or was it regional or coach type dictated?

Logistically....was it a sliding door that was locked closed when not being used? Where were those plastic/fabric curtains kept when not hung over the connection? Can anybody direct me to a cut away drawing or even better a video as to how gangways were connected and isolated? Not the couplings - I understand that but struggle with the whole connector/gangway/rubbing plate/curtain/rubber tube/bellows etc etc. Apologies for straying - I'm only paining an n gauge carriage end!

Thank you for the plethora information there. So am I correct thinking this image is probably a 2e as built, and this is the Bournemouth blue?

Actually...I realise now this isn't Bournemouth blue moquette is it? This one ahs some yellow and green through it as well.

I see from the offset door at the end that this must be a 2dbwith the larger toilet resulting in offset door and one less seat.

  9. Moving on with my MK2 rake and keen to fill my Mk2e TSOs with some authentic 1982 interiors.

Can anybody tell me the internal arrangements at this time in terms of seat design, were the walls wood veneer or plastic, were there carpets like in first class, were there tables at every seat, were there curtains etc?

    Thank you.

  10. Ah-ha....what a minefield! So the blue was NSE...the stripes were the refit of the eighties...

So would I be right in assuming that a western region Mk2D FK in 1982 would have the original seat design, which, using the Michael Harris book description would look like this:

  11. Thank you chaps, that is all most helpful. I'm modelling in n gauge 1982 so will probably go for the orange seats....although this image I found on Flickr suggests seats were blue at some point? What do you think?

  12. Great information people - can anybody help with my WTT of 1982 with the following references:

    D350, D385, D490, D315 etc?

From the above info I'm guessing that this WTT just puts the max weight allowed rather than cross referencing a code for timings?

And while I understand the reference in the WTT for D2 being a DMU of various combinations, they all include 2 motor coaches I see. So what was the story with the single car Class 121?

    With thanks

    Christopher
