    Gents,

As a cheaper alternative to the Woodland Scenic foam, have you considered this stuff from Homebase. It's 3mm thick (I think Woodlands is 4mm?) but you get 10m2 for ~£38. It's what I'm using on my layout (see link in footer) and it does perform quite well in the acoustics department.

I've used laminates floor underlay for everything. I've used the flat sheets. It's inexpensive and works really well. I just glue everything to it.

    Hope these are of interest.

Looking through my stuff carefully arranged files, I saw the following on (what was I assume) a Mersey Railway Driver's route learning aid in preparation for the electrification of the Wirral Lines of the LMSR. The numbers are for identification purposes only. The diagram is annoted :- "Central Station, Birkenhead , July 1937.

Also shown, are 2 back board plates that were given to me from the box; the first is for lever 5, the ground frame release and the second is for lever 34.

I'm coming at this from a position of complete ignorance,  but I have enjoyed the thread. Why arethe levers numbers so high? Normally levers numbers start at 1....i can think of some possibilities, but what is the reason?

  3. Ah,  I was an avid trainspotter at castle cary and Bruton from 1973 to 78. Yes,  mostly DMUs on the Weymouth trains. I remember w51307 and w51322 as a common unit. There was a mid morning up train that was always loco hauled, class 46s being the mainstay. I still have my detailed spotting records and if you need more info,  let me know.

  4. I agree that the variation was massive. Every crossing was different. Have a look at dunster sea lane crossing. The road served a U.S. army base at dunster beach and was used in the build up to d day. I have a story of a tank demolishing one of the gates.  There are a number of pictures of the crossing in gwr days around and i have more details if needed.

I have found out since thou, The wall behind this box was part of the box, If you look at the wall now, you can see some white wash still visible , This was the locker room,I thought the box was set into the wall,As i have built it, This evidence come to light when i almost finished it, so it is staying as is.

Excellent modelling,  well done.  Are you really sure about this? I would have thought unusual to use part of an existing retaining wall for the rear wall of the box.  Also, wouldn't there be evidence where the box was demolished, evidence where the box walls were keyed in? I think the box was separate to the retaining wall.

  6. So, tuesday this week i had to go to the barber. Bit of a queue and while sat waiting my turn i started to browse Hattons website on my phone. I spotted two Hornby Hawksworth coaches at a bargain price. I placed the order on my phone and then had my haircut...lunchtime on Tuesday.

Wednesday morning, postie turns up with the coaches, by lunchtime they are running on the layout.

Well done Hattons for an excellent and rapid service.

Haven't things improved over the last few years in general for mail order!

  7. My new layout is preogressing. DC control, but i am using servos for point motors worked by a megapoints controller.

There are 10 turnouts. I would like to have push button route setting, and there would be 8 different routes.

In the past, with solenoid control, i would have built a diode matrix and linked it to a CDU.

Now i see that the servo controller requires a continuous power feed for a servo to "lie" one way and the absence of any power to lie the other way. They suggest simple toggle switches.

I can see how i might modify a diode matrix, but then i get stuck. If i power up one route (by toggling its switch on), i would need to untoggle it before i set another route, which sounds awkward.

I could use an 8-way rotary switch, but i would prefer an electronic solution. The megapoints controller has a memory function which does what I want, but only has 3 routes.

how do i go about this?

If it helps, the track diagram showing the different power supply sections is attached.

    Thanks

  8. In short yes.  3mm leds are really cheap on eBay. I bought a pack of 50 for £1.50.

Then buy some 3mm internal diameter brass tube. Again, a couple of quid.

Cut short lengths of the tube and file to make lamp housing and hoods.

Cut a flat piece of 0.5mm thick brass to a suitable size and drill holes to accommodate the lamp housings.

Use more of the 3mm tube fur posts.

Assembly is self explanatory, feed the led posituve wires throughthe tube,  solder the negatives to the brass.

    Add detailing as needed.

A good quality signal for 50p or so....

Im about too do some myself, will post pictures I  a week or so....
