On this day in History – Scotland – 24th April 1972 On this day forty years ago it was the third day of my first “Freedom of Scotland†Railrover and the day starts at Haymarket for a “push pull†service to Glasgow and out to Gourock for a morning on the Clyde steamers. It was then back to Glasgow for a round trip to Dundee – Edinburgh – Glasgow followed by a trip down to Carlisle in time to catch the overnight Euston – Stranrear for a sleep.   2. On this Day in History – Derby Works – 8th April 1973. Thirty nine years ago I had a tour round the now closed and demolished Derby Locomotive Works which produced the following: class 03 (2381/87), class 08 (3009/34/92/94/98, 3100/07, 3587, 3695, 3765/79, 3856, 3909/12/36/88, 4000, 4149), class 17 (8598), class 20 (8016/29/40/59, 8123/35/36, 8308), class 24 (5025/49/55/57/85), class 25 (5160, 5201/22/84/89, 7539/42/43/50/70/95, 7625/54), class 27 (5349/91), class 40 (242), class 44 (3), class 45 (19/43/59/67/72/86, 106, 45101/03), class 46 (160/71/83). Steam: 4472 Flying Scotsman, 45690 Leander, 47357. Locomotives of note were ex Southern Region class 08’s 3092/94/98 and 3100 which were withdrawn and were about to undergo an overhaul having been sold for export to a Liberian company, LAMCo. Class 08, 3034 withdrawn from Tinsley in November 1972 and used for spares for the LAMCo class 08’s, broken up at Derby in November 1973. Class 24, 5049 which had been involved in an accident at Kidsgrove when the No2 end cab was crushed back to the bulkhead with the bulkhead bent backwards into the boiler compartment. The repair resulted in 5049 gaining a new cab with the later style roof mounted headcode box. Also of note is the commencement of the class 45 electric train heating equipment fitment with 45101, 45103, 45104 (59), 45105 (86), 45106 (106) and 45107 (43) all present. Where was 45102? Finally there were three steam locomotives under repair, 4472 Flying Scotsman which had run under its own power from Edge Hill after returning from spending four years in America, Stanier Jubilee 45690 Leander being repaired and repainted prior to moving to the Dinting Railway Centre and Fowler Jinty tank 47357 destined for the Midland Railway Centre at Butterley. On this day in History - Day Excursion to Plymouth - 11th March 1972 One way in the early 1970’s of travelling to interesting railway destinations on the cheap was to become a Notts County Football Club supporter for the day and use their football special train (Footex). Being in the old Division 3 at this time meant little risk of football hooligans and some interesting railway destinations. On this day thirty eight years ago Notts County played Plymouth away and I used the Magpies Footex for a trip to the South West and back with traction being provided by Peak 95 and in lieu of the match a bus ride/walk out to Laira MPD. Result of the match was a 1-1 draw. Locomotives of note are 2276 withdrawn seven months earlier in August 1969, but no broken up until May 1977, 12115 which would last in service for another seven months until withdrawn in October 1970, broken up in July 1972, 12128 which would last in service for another four months until withdrawn in July 1970, broken up in November 1971, 840 and 848 withdrawn in April and March 1969 respectively and both broken up within the next five months. All of the class 15 locomotives seen would be withdrawn en mass one year later in March 1971 with the exception of 8215 which was condemned in December 1970. Also of note is the lack of any class 83/84 locomotives which at this point of time were all being stored awaiting modification. This was also the first time I had seen class 31’s at Old Oak Common which were just being transferred in as replacements for the class 22 locomotives and later the class 35’s.   22. On This Day in History –Manchester/Bury/Crewe 28th November 1970. In 1970 the class 83 and 84 electric locomotives were all taken out of traffic pending an upgrade to there electrical control equipment. Most were stored at Bury and on this November day in 1970 I ventured north from Nottingham to Bury to track down these stored locomotives. This is what I saw that day. Nottingham – Bury: Class 08 (3029/34/37, 3404, 3769/71/73/84, 3860), class 20 (8008/12, 8101/41/92), class 25 (5270/74, 7585), class 31 (5655), class 37 (6718, 6809), class 40 (213, 385), class 44 (2), class 45 (26/75, 108), class 47 (1783/85, 1828, 1900), class 86 (E3158). In store at Bury were: Class 76 (E26000), class 83 (E3024/25/26/27/28/29/30/31/32/35/98/99), class 84 (E3036/37/39/40/41/44/45). Present were twelve out of fifteen class 83 locomotives and seven out of ten class 84 locomotives. Following on from Bury I paid a visit to Reddish MPD and noted the following: Class 25 (5153, 7548/94), class 40 (226), class 76 (E26002/09/10/17/24/35/40/42/46/56). My journey back from Manchester to Nottingham was via Crewe and produced the following: Class 03 (2386/98), class 08 (3032/33, 3105, 3279, 3585, 3984, 4035, 4143), class 24 (5008/89), class 25 (5203), class 37 (6964), class 40 (274/89/98), class 45 (45), class 46 (141/54), class 47 (1628, 1947), class 50 (405/13/34), class 81 (E3012/20/21/96), class 85 (E3074/81/86), class 86 (E3105/14/16/28/30/32/40/45/48/57/63/68/78/86/89/91). On the journey back to Nottingham I made a visit to Crewe MPD: Class 08 (3801), class 24 (5007/22/32/38/41/60/79, 5142), class 40 (211/29/32/33/43/67, 320/44), class 47 (1540, 1615/18/23/89, 1708/15/45/55, 1808/34, 1943/45/58/60/63), class 50 (406/07/14/15/21/24/26/29/30/31/33/38/43/47/48). Of note in addition to the class 83 and 84 locomotives are the fifteen class 50’s on Crewe MPD representing 30% of the class and the now withdrawn E26000, the original class 76 dating from 1941 which would be broken up at Crewe in October 1972.
