  1. I notice that Hornby are bringing out another Nelson - this time ‘Robert Blake’ but do not appear to make a tts decoder available (other than the one fitted to ‘Lord Nelson’).
I have today written to Hornby about this. Surely it would make sense to introduce one. I won’t buy another Hornby Nelson unless I can fit tts sound.

Conventional wisdom is that facilitating DC operation on a DCC loco can cause unexpected issues when used on a DCC layout.

I have over 40 DCC locos with sound, and yet more with just DCC, all of which also run on DC with no problems at all.

    Hi All,

This has no doubt been covered elsewhere in this thread but my 3306TTS Lord Nelson doesn't run on DC at all, as supplied. I've read a dozen or mare pages of posts but no answer to my question:

How can the model be altered to run on DC ?

Can this be changed by altering CVs or would I need to remove the chip and insert a blanking plug?

Can it be set to run on both DC and DCC ?

I just want smooth DC analogue running, don't care for sound, and have limited skill in body removal etc.

    Lovely model though.

Sorry to be so pig ignorant.

    Hi Rob,

All you have to do is set CV 29 to a value of 38 and you will have DC running and also be able to program in a 4 digit number (i.e 0850).

    Cheers,

    Paul.

And we're back to making pointless statements...

I have not said anything that has hinted at you being an idiot. FYI your initial speculation was unnecessary, as I have already stated, you could've politely asked, instead you decided to come up with two accusations based on nothing. Graham gave you the answer and I followed up with a simple post explaining the effects of such a situation.

PS: Thanks for your detailed study on my profile picture. Didn't know you could form opinions based on a tiny 34.92kb image. I'm so glad my real friends know me for who I am.

    Ciao...!

Let’s get back to just enjoying our hobby.

You could ask rather that make an assumption and a couple of wild claims. As you can see, Graham has been kind and quick to post about it.

I called your post pointless because you just made two assumptions without any real evidence to back it up. Hornby is trying to deal with a factory closure and that takes time. A sudden factory closure can be a real headache. You firstly loose a production slot that can takes weeks or months to book, you have to then look for a new factory, you have transfer the tooling to the new factory, sometimes the tooling needs to be modified to be used with the machines in the new factory, new factory means new staff and therefore staff have to be trained to assemble the new model, test moulds have to be made, test samples have to be built, QC team has to check it, Hornby has to check it, a production slot has to be booked and then production can begin. This doesn't take days or weeks, it takes months and years. Factories in China don't make models exclusively for one manufacturer (unless they own the factory). They have multiple clients and you need to wait your turn.

At the end of the day, it's a model train. It's part of a hobby, a hobby that doesn't really run according to a time-table.

Please don’t treat me like an idiot. That was all very unnecessary. From your picture I thought you would be a nice person, or perhaps that’s not really you.

An explanation of the production issue can be found in the work in progress section of my blog post here https://grahammuz.com/2020/01/06/Hornby-to-celebrate-centenary-in-style-with-ambitious-plans-for-their-2020-range-even-if-not-too-much-southern-also-work-in-progress-update/

Different models and their tolling are produced in different factories and therefore an issue with one factory, as in this case, will affect some models but not others.

Thanks Graham for the information about the MNs. They say patience is a virtue - not sure I qualify!  However, I did wait 8 or was it 9, years for my Kernow Warship, so let’s hope the MNs don’t take that long.

Well I`ve had a blue one on pre order over a year now and the last update I saw was June/July - any ideas why they were delayed so long?

Slipped yet again to Dec 20/ Jan 21. Don’t think Hornby are interested. Mines been on pre-order since January 2018, they obviously don’t need the cash(?).

If you want The output that is currently on F2 which is non latching, (in this case output D) to be on a different function key (e.g. F4, which is a latching function) just place the tick for "D" in F4 and write that change to the decoder.

(Mine are still on F2 as the DCC system & decoders are European)

Thanks Keith. You are presumably still on 'Decoder Pro', but I'm not! How can I do this with a Gaugemaster Prodigy2?

If you have a decent European brand (Lenz, Zimo etc.) decoder, function mapping should be part of the spec.

If you use JMRI Decoder Pro* you should find it amongst the program options.

    * IMHO everyone should have this (it's free) it cuts out a lot of decoder program hassle.

See this for a Lenz  decoder:

    functions.JPG.3cae9a5dc44c9c40d42e25974a73274f.JPG

That looks very interesting, but I'm none the wiser. Perhaps you would kindly explain how that helps to change function 2 to non-latching, or change F2 to another F number that does latch.

  10. I have just experienced a similar event - a Hornby A4 'Herring Gull' with Hornby's original full fat DCC sound decided to go 'pop' and emit large amounts of smoke. It had just had a brief satisfactory run on DCC round my layout with sound on and was sitting stationary by a platform while I ran another loco when it occurred. I quickly removed it from the layout and upon removing the tender body found it had melted the inside of the tender. I then put a blanking plug in and it ran perfectly again (on DC only, of course). There would therefore seem to be nothing else wrong with the loco, e.g. no shorting out, to cause the decoder to burn up.

The decoder, ESU Locksound V4, was badly burnt around one major component on the board which had obviously caught fire. I  don't understand why this happened and consider it dangerous - I was glad I noticed the smoke before any further damage had been done to the loco (or my house). I bought the loco about 3 or 4  years ago and I haven't run it for a couple of years, but surely this shouldn't happen. I am thinking of sending the chip to Hornby but don't know if they will show any interest or offer a replacement.

Hi. I have installed a number of big Deltics with Legoman sound, and a pair of Charlie's EM3 huge speakers. A small bit of chassis modification is required for the speakers, and the chip sits in the fuel tanks. Feel free to drop me a pm if you need any advice with regards to fitting.

    Hi Lee,

I’ve sent you a pm (assuming I’ve done it correctly!).

    regards,

    Paul.

Sound projects are so subjective, but my view is that Legomanbiffo’s recordings and set up are the best on the market. As for fitting the decoder and speaker, it is a relatively simple wiring job and there is plenty of space in the body for one, and possibly two, really chunky speakers. Fantastic!

Thanks for your advice, I’ll make some enquiries about Legomanbiffo.
