  1. Dunno Trevor. I took Trenoweth from an old road atlas, probably dating from the fifties. Spellings do change from time to time - dare I say, more so in the Celtic regions of the country than further East?

The spellings of place names probably tend to have changed more in the Celtic regions of the country as they were originally in the local Celtic language.  When this ceases to be in everyday use, being replaced by English, the meaning of the names gets forgotten and they change/become corrupted over time.  Trenowth is a good example of such a name in Cornwall, it would have originally been Trenoweth.  Tre means a settlement such as a farmstead or village so Trenoweth is "New Village".

  2. This book should appeal, especially the three chapters about how to make a model electric railway. Scratchbuilding really was scratchbuilding back then. http://chestofbooks.com/crafts/popular-mechanics/Things-To-Make/index.html

If Edwardian looks in, I especially recommend Chapter IX, which should go down a storm as a Christmas holiday project.

It is indeed a fascinating book, one of these days l'll get round to building a representation of the electric loco (although probably in 0 gauge rather than 2 inch).

  3. Actually, the Command Station (CANCMD) uses through-hole construction.

It is the CANCAB that uses SMD construction.

However, another member is working on a through-hole version of the CANCAB in a slightly bigger hand-held box, so that may well become another option in the future.

Do you have any more information on this as the surface mount components are the only thing that is putting me off this project. I am happy with through hole soldering having built a number of audio projects but have never worked with SMD components.
