You’ve done well to last this long without any mainline engines. 

The 31 is a lovely model and I think 20s are back on the cards from Heljan. 

Can I ask what traffic they were used on was it a particular traffic. 

Or was it they were still used on parcels traffic or used with the more common 12 ton vans

Ive noted about your and Robs comments regarding couplings. 

On Hillport I use the below uncoupling tool. It’s the same as Dave Tailby sorry Clive was using at the NEC last November. You get them from layouts 4 you. I have no trouble with it hooking the link and getting it over. Just practice really and ensure your couplings aren’t tight nice and loose especially screw couplings. 

As regard to couplings I always try to use the coupling on the loco when coupling to stock. 

Like you mention Heljan are a law unto themselves. The hook I prise outward a bit on any stock not locomotives though. If coupling Heljan to other makes I use the Heljan coupling. 

Good to hear you and rob enjoyed the weekend. I was at Macclesfield with my n gauge layout but have been asked to go to Crewe next year.

Yes it will be still available for exhibitions as soon as I've built a new support structure for it, because Steve needed the one it was on at Glasgow for his other layouts, however it's having it's first outing in my ownership rather earlier than expected. Due to a layout having to pull out of the Calne Show on 15th/16th April, Farmers Drove will be drafted in as a replacement.

 

So I have 3 weeks to build the support structure and lighting rig, sort out my stock, add staples to Peco wagons so the uncouplers work, oh and find a controller to use. So not a lot. 😱😱

Just to say Lymebrook Yard will be appearing at the Macclesfield show this weekend. 

Nothing been done to the layout so hopefully a nice weekend running and shunting the yard. 

Perhaps see some of you folks there. 

In Helvarras’s second pic above it seems to me that the visible vans maybe gunpowder vans. Anyone else reckon the same. 

I keep checking back on this thread to see if anymore info or another installment has been put up. 

Yes it makes for good reading but it is also useful for modeling purposes as well in terms of operation and what went on really.

Readying the layout for the two shows for the layout in March 

firstly the Ivanhoe Model Railway Society’s exhibition at Mountsorrel Leicestershire this weekend and Macclesfield exhibition towards the end of the month.

At the end of the show today Farmers Drove went home with its new owner. Yes I’ve sold it on. 

The last train run in my ownership was a Class 105 on a BLS tour which ran into Keeling’s sidings and the departure back to March. 

I am quite certain the new owner is going to keep it on the show circuit.

Day 2 of the show and again the layout worked very well. 

I was really chuffed to be awarded 3rd place in the best visiting layout competition run by the Modelrail Scotland team.

The photo shoot went well and it gave me the chance to look at everything and clean the track and box it up ready for Glasgow 

This is one of my pics with my phone. 

I know Mr Nevard’s pictures will be a lot better. 

We’re stand B7 at Glasgow near to the exhibitors tea place. 

I have been cleaning and titivating the layout ready for a magazine photo shoot this Friday. 

The layouts next outing is Modelrail Scotland. In the main it’ll be the rolling stock and locomotive wheels that need checking over and cleaning. 

Hopefully see some of you in Glasgow.

Ben it was a lockdown project as it was built while I was furloughed from work and all the materials used in the early part of construction were what was in the garage as we couldn’t go anywhere. 

Into 2023 we go and the first show for the layout this year is Pontefract 28/29 January details can be found in the exhibitions part of the forum. Think there’s a few O Gauge layouts listed to appear  there this year. 

Other dates for the layout this year as yet are the DEMU show in June and Stafford club show in September.

37029 was the initial loco of choice,  especially as I had to do some minor bogie repairs after Westbury 

 

 

This shot was a new angle, it basically required my phone to be placed in the canal...

The CCT looks great. It’s a lovely model must get round to weathering mine. 

Unfortunately will miss the Crewe show although very local to where I live I’ll be at another show in Macclesfield with my N gauge. Hope to get to see the layout sometime though.

The pics Phil took at DEMU show have really come out well. 

Yes I have asked the question on Facebook in a group I am in and they said the same. 

They also undertook casting concrete for signal bases and when a signal box was being decommissioned they would salvage reusable stuff.

On a N gauge society transfer pack is a transfer S&T SBC it also has the legend CREWE OLD RAIL STORES. I think it’s for an open wagon that the society produces a kit for. 

Looking on Paul Bartlett’s site of SR open wagons there is another wagon with the legend on. 

Two questions 

Who were the S&T SBC GANG. 

Obviously they were something to do with the signal and telegraph dept. 

what was there role. They certainly had there own branded wagons 

Secondly 

What did Crewe old rail stores actually do and it’s purpose. 

Both the pics I’ve seen of this writing is on the side of 4 wheel 13 ton open wagons. Did they have any other rolling stock allocated to them. 

Hope someone can enlighten me on the questions above.

What height is the backscene as you are making it dwarf the trains to good effect. Feels like you are looking down from a hotel window. Probably miss the concert at the arena. As we are too busy watching all the different arrivals and departures!

the height is about a foot. 

This one is operated from the front sitting to the right of the layout as you look at it so I could make the backboard higher. 

The real reason is the bit of wood I had lying around in the garage was that wide so that’s what was used. 

You mention looking from a hotel window ive always said your on the top of a multistory car park looking over. 

To be honest some inspiration for the layout comes from staying at the Jury’s Inn in Glasgow when exhibiting at Modelrail Scotland, as it’s on the side of Glasgow Central station and a room overlooking is brilliant for just watching trains, mainly units just arriving and departing.

Last weekend I bought the curves and curved points from Warley. These are for the single leads from the fiddle Yard behind the layout which will split into two at the front giving the impression of double track through the station and scenic part. 

I do this as many of the trains will be EMUs so can go either way round with the freights going loco first whichever way. I do this on Tanners Hill, Lymebrook Yard and Farmers Drove. 

I can start to plan how it will fit. 

For those familiar with the real place it’s looking like the scenic break will be the road bridge and the old snooker hall one end and with a bit of for shortening the London road bridge the other as I would like to get the crossover in at that end. 

Like I said above I’ll hopefully get the boards up and can perhaps show a track plan of the viewing side.

the 08 you borrowed Dave well Clive really looked really smart. 

All done and dusted 

it was even easy getting the layout loaded and off home. 

Really enjoyed the show. Good to be back at the Warley show at the NEC. 

The layout worked well it was mainly operating errors if it went wrong. 

Here’s a couple of pics I took yesterday afternoon. 

The layouts next outing is Glasgow next February. 

The layouts boards collected so now the planning can start over the Christmas break. Two boards 4x2 feet it should give me a good run at 8x2 feet. 

Made by John Cox to his usual standards so they’ll be good.
