  1. Doctor Who - The Deadly Assassin had a scene filmed at Amberley Chalk Pit Museum I think Tom Baker nearly gets hit by one of their narrow gauge locos

Doctor Who - The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances had a lot of scenes filmed at the Barry Island Railway

Doctor Who -The Wedding of River Song had CGI steam locos

Sherlock Holmes A Game of Shadows (which is in cinemas from today) had scenes filmed at Didcot Railway Centre, Bluebell Railway and the Severn Valley Railway.

Miss Potter had scenes filmed on the Bluebell

60163 Tornado, the Great Central and the East Anglian Railway Museum have all featured in episodes of Top Gear

Great British Machines - The 1930's which featured the A4's and 60019 Bittern and Great British Machines -Trains with Chris Barrie there was also another programme with Chris Barrie that featured 60009 Union of South Africa.

How Do They Do? had an episode that featured 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley on the NYMR and also Tornado.

Absolutely Chuffed the documentry about the building of Tornado plus the many other railway programmes that featured on BBC Four a few years back

    Mark Williams On The Rails

    Trains with Pete Waterman

Off the Rails with Vince Henderson

    Central Steam

    Speed Machines

Southern Steam (a programme we used to get on ITV in the South East)

    Yorkshire Steam

I'm sure there are a million others.

  2. The plaques come in a set with the nameplate and the number for the smokebox door.

Product code FEP60163 on fox transfers website

They cost a little bit, alternatively you can get the printed deflectors http://www.ebay.co.u...=item4aad1db732

Thanks may try getting that set at somepoint. Shame there is no A1 Trust Headboard (other than the one in the TMC Bachmann Tornado) or a Steam Dreams Cathedrals Express headboard.
  3. The 4mm namplates are the same size as the ones printed on the deflector so its quite easy to line those up. For the secondary plate I found a photo similar to this http://www.flickr.co...rpe/3937019917/ and judged it by eye. I only dabbed a minute amount of superglue on it.

So is it just the nameplates in the Fox Transfer set and then printing the naming plaque off or do the naming plaques come with the nameplates
  4. Same pack as what I got, I was a little disappointed to find the brass nameplates were not included, so I ordered the brass nameplates from fox transfers.

I may do that as well. I did think about painting the door handles and hinges silver but then didn't know how to do the naming plaques or worksplates as I've never customised a loco model.

Edit. I just noticed on there thisA1 Peppercorn Class 4-6-2 - TORNADO - Special set for new build engine light blue - brass. Now includes secondary plaque. It costs £18.90 but what does it contain as I can't get any info on its contents otherwise I may buy that plus some loco headboards.

  5. I decided to take a plunge and bought myself a Tornado Express (but didn't with a Special Edition as I feel happy enough with my Bachmann one) set at the Mid Hants on Saturday. Sadly because I'm moving soon I won't be able to give her a run out.

  6. I'm guessing that while Bachmann may send spare parts out I won't be able to get a new tender for my Tornado. And I'm also not sure whether to email Hornby about getting a replacement 5972 Hogwarts Castle body after that had a similar fall to S.A.C's Tornado and broke part of the bufferbeam. And maybe a Merchant Navy chassis as the motion came apart one day and a screw I need went missing.

  7. This is why I don't have dogs. Or cats.

And horses are too big to get into my home.

My cat has never been interested in my trainset or locomotives. My friend's cats on the other hand when he had his layout. Sadly my 5972 had a similar problem after it fell but as I've had it a few years I don't think I can get it replaced.
  8. Great SE Tornado review S.A.C. Does the Hornby one come with etched nameplates like Bachmann's.

Saw the Railroad Tornado for the first time in Crawley Modelzone in Crawley on Monday. No Special Edition yet though.

  9. It is a shame that there has not been a comparison with the Bachmann offering in the magazines but that may come. It does beg the question...Is it worth paying an extra £20-30 for the Bachmann model? The £92 offering from Hornby looks a very good model as it stands without any extras.

I suppose if you buy the Hornby model you can choose to detail it more to whatever you want, but assuming it will cost £20 to purchase the bits and the time spent, would it not be worth buying the Bachamnn model which is already to a high standard, bit of a poser?

The only problem I have with my Bachmann Tornado was the plastic plug that connects the tender to the loco. It is fiddly to fit the metal bar through and then connecting it to the plug. Also my plug chipped so it does not connect very well and is held by some blutac. Anybody know a way of sorting it out because i've had the model since December 2009 so I can't really send it back and i'm sure Bachmann won't be able to send a spare tender.

I'm still not sure about getting a Hornby one as my Bachmann one was a special 18th Birthday present (though to be fair it was almost a Christmas present as my Birthday is September and didn't get my model until 2 days before Christmas Day.) so I don't really need two but the Hornby does look impressive and £92 isn't bad. I think I may just stick to my Bachmann one but if Hornby one day make a BR Blue 60163 and if they sell it the same as the Special Edition then I may get one.

Then again I could always change my mind.

  10. Good review in Model Rail. Seems to confirm however that the Tornado Express pack features a Railroad Tornado. Its brunswick green with a simplier boiler band, cab and tender lining. Seems a shame for a pack that is going to cost £163.

  11. Got myself a Hornby Magazine with a review of the Special Edition.

Here's the interesting bits for those who may get this version.

    No Cab glazing

    Solid Buffers

    Moulded handrails

Electric lamps/lamp irons are included in detail pack

    Detailed cab interior but unpainted

    Moulded coal

    3 pole motor

    Etched nameplates

The magazine infers some of the details have done so that the price is £92 rather than £130.

I'm slightly put off now without the painted cab interior but the paint decoration look great. But I'll wait and see.

  12. Looking in some of the model magazines reviews (well the pictures anyway) earlier and it looks like the Brunswick Tornado (that comes in the Tornado Express Set) has a slight lack of decoration. It is missing both the printed naming plaques and the worksplates on the cabsides and has black painted door hinges. It looked like a repainted Railroad version which considering the set is £163 is dissappointing (unless the production model is different).

The Special Edition is looking very tempting. And should a BR Blue version be released I may have to get that as well.

  13. Hi Dan, currently collating photographs and putting a video together - it'll show all, have no fear. I've made special mention of the tender connection, done a short clip on how it fits together.

The bar is on the tender, the pin for fitting it is on the loco. Sort of the reverse to that on the Bachmann model, and in my opinion it doesn't work very well. It seems very flimsy, and possibly prone to derailment going backwards.

    Ah right cheers.
  14. Great review. I'm not planning on getting the Railroad version but may get the Special Edition but I guess that the bufferbeams on that would also be plastic on that wouldn't it. So does the bar with holes go through a slot on the loco with a plug like on Bachmann's or just a plug that does down through the holes and if there is a plug is it plastic like Bachmann's or metal like the one on the Railroad Scotsman's tender.

Sorry if that doesn't make sense.

  15. Has anyone seen a version that's a confirmed 'high detail' one? Only ask as from all pics I've seen so far I've no idea which is which...

There were some at a model show a few months back but didn't look like the super detail ones even though one was the Brunswick version.

The advert I saw had all 3 versions.

The Special Edition (has the announcement picture but also 3 other images. One of the front (kind of looks like Bachmann but difficult to tell by the Railroad version as they have the same smokebox handle position), another of a bit of the motion and the tender (which is 100% Hornby's as it differs from Bachmann's by the connectors)

    Railroad (Announcement picture)

Tornado Express Pack (Again just the announcement picture)

Otherwise I don't think there's been any official images until either Hornby themselves reveal them or when all 3 are reviewed in Model Rail as Chris Leigh said up thread

I also found this link which has a picture (a little scroll down the page) https://www.model-railways-live.co.uk/Features/The_London_Festival_of_Railway_Modelling/

  16. I picked up LNER Pacifics, a bookazine that has recently been released. On the back is a Hornby advert for their Tornado's. However one of the images which I think is meant to be the Special Edition looks very close to Bachmann's version.

Anyone know what the loco-tender connector will be made from because the plastic one on my Bachmann is chipped so it doesn't properly connect anymore. Hopefully a metal like the Railroad 4472 or the plugs that I think newer models Hornby make have.

  17. By 'locked' do you mean 'permanently coupled'? If so, then no, All Bachmann A1's including Tornado (I have a production A1 and a Tornado) are not permanently coupled. There is a bar attached to the Loco which slides through a slot on the tender and hooks onto a smaill round peg under the tender. There are two holes on the coupling bar, one for close coupling and one for tighter radius curves.

    Hope this was of help.

That tender peg is awful. It took me ages to connect the loco and tender and not long after I had it a bit of the peg broke so I've had keep it held with blu tac. Don't really have a layout to run it on anyway at the moment except a small oval
  18. Hi guys

Yes owen same here, im limited at the mo, as I have holiday looming... so have to save some money for that, plus the island steam fair im sure model stuff will be there also.

Hi Dan, yes... i dont think they will ever sell all of them... for me £150 is a bit excessive for a terrier and a blue coach, £100 would of been ok, but still not that much to get excited about. I did have a look though your images, always enjoy looking as I didn't take that many plus it was overcast and my camera doesn't like those conditions.

Thanks for the words on the 80151, and 9F.

Thanks for looking at the images. Had a great time down there and Sunday was best with the weather especially for the cavalcade. I did send 2 more links to the site but that was after my first ones were put up and they are on another site so I'll have to wait and see if they make it on there.

Any more loco projects in the works or are you concentrating on preparing the Sheffield Park layout.

  19. Noticed the Bluebell still have those Hornby packs. I picked mine up last Christmas eve. Great set but £150 was a bit steep for it. May get the shelter soon. I was down the line on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and enjoyed it enormously especially the Cavalcade which you can see a link to the images on the Bluebell site.

Brilliant job on the 9F and 80151.

  20. Been a good week since I updated, a few things have been going on, layout wise, outside sections are being levelled to insure better running before rebuilding as one of the out door curves is too tight for some locos to get round.

Also tracked down some LBSCR Water cranes, so I can replace the ones on Horsted with the correct type and also buy a couple more for a future project.

Loco updates, Fenchurch has had a good run... and turns out its alot faster than a Hornby terrier... so any double heading might be an issue...

SECR O1 all transfers were applied to the loco half yesterday and sealed in so they dont move, and on the tender I spent the whole day lining the frames and the applied hand rails to the tender and the loco.

Today Matt varnish will be applied and then plates and final tweeks.

A few images from yesterdays work...
