  1. Northroader - thanks for those - actually I'm still avoiding roundy-roundys! - I had a query from a friend in the same general area as our Soo-line friend, who asked if I could remember the roundy-layouts and I knew exactly which ones he was talking about - but couldn't, for the life of me, think what the name of the builder was - so eventually I gave in, accepted that my brain had had a hiccup, and asked - it's one of the unfortunate problems of getting older! The little grey cells get tired, and need a bit of assistance!
  2. Gotta say that it is making my antennae twitch - Glad to see that it is working elsewhere too - I hope he thinks about joining us too!
  3. Daniel, feel free to hi-jack - always interested to see great layouts, and to bring them to the attention of others - Speaking of which - for anyone who has access to Train Orders.com a very nice, small-ish switching layout popped up this morning https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?3,4550827 , very much in the style of those previously mentioned and a certain lorry driving, midland gent will be interested 'cos it features a three letter, red/white/black loco . I have sent him a PM and said he would be very welcome to post on here. BTW, thanks for all the helpful replies to my memory hiccup!
  4. I'm trying to remember the name of the builder of a series of small, back-country, frequently roundy-roundy, layouts, all named for his daughters - like "Rosa, Illinois". I hate it when this happens! The layouts have appeared in CM.
  5. <Rant on> Dear Joe - sorry but I can't disagree with you more - I honestly think that the "sacred" 4 x 8 is probably one of the biggest killers of model railroading (certainly in UK!) It is big, unwieldy, takes up a huge amount of room in the "normal" UK house, and once erected is almost impossible to get out of the room in one piece, or to move for cleaning, and will cause family arguments between Husbands and Wives for all those reasons. There are lots of much smaller ideas (see Carls scarapbooks) that can be far more "house friendly", and provide an equal amount of fun. <Rant off> LOL I'm standing by to be shot at - but as someone who moved around the world/countryevery couple of years (Ex-Miliitary), this is one problem I DO understand very well!
  6. I just KNEW I had something wrong yesterday .............

  11. I was too, but then I got an offer - and thought I may as well. I gave it a try - and TBH, it is just SO damn efficient........ I haven't had any problems (touch wood) since using this combo.....
  12. Can I suggest Faststone Capture - - do a search for the last freeware version on PC - hasn't failed me yet!
  13. My choice is Malawarebytes Premium, running in the background all the time, and Clamwin - introduced to me by my computer guru when AVG let something very nasty through -
  14. Apart from demonstrating the degree of Cock-womble-ness of the current UK government, this Windrush thing is really starting to bite the Parliamentary ar$e - and will do so even more before it stops. As a Brit, from "Sarf uv da Riva" ( adopted Scot) who was here when the Windrush docked, and the "incomers" arrived to help us out ( indeed many had served in the British Forces during the war - and been proud to do so! ) I'm ASHAMED of the way they, and all the others who came to help from other parts of the "Empire" have been, and are being, treated. They deserve our thanks, rather than being treated like "illegals" and criminals. I have tried very hard to avoid moving this into any form of Politicking and I would ask that any other members do the same. I hope the Moderators can find it in their hearts to accept this as, possibly, a small rant on my part rather than any form of political diatribe
  15. If people REALLY believe the Earth is flat, would one of them please explain what stops all the water running off the edge? - and if it does, where does it all go?
  16. Seen on FB - it reminded me of Deadlines for various things
  17. Jerry - the most sensible (and both easy, and simple) way is that the carfloat arrived before you start your shift - so it is there when you clock on- and sails after you have finished - so it is still there when you go home and the next shift has taken over. You can move it about to simulate sailing, using rods or levers under the layout - but whether it is worth the added complication is up to you - or have the float on a roll-about tea trolley-type arrangement - using more than one if you want to make life complicated. I made life difficult for myself by building an HO layout that fitted into a Shoebox ( for a competition, and to see if I could do it!) - if that would interest you see http://rmweb.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=29306&start=0&hilit=ingleferry+wharf , and also http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/112913-ingleferry-wharf-went-to-a-further-exhibition/ - this float moves sideways and is part of a "reversed Inglenook" - where the car float forms the sidings (which move), and the head-shunt remains stationary ( the reverse of normal practice) You can also find it on Pages 73, and 78a of http://www.Carendt.com. I've also attached an article from a way-back MRR regarding shift work operations which might be of interest, and/or use to your operations.
  18. Speaking of signs - I notice (whoops! PUN!) that we have quite a few layouts with scrapyards - so if anybody needs one (or several) - feel free to resize and use
  19. I believe that it is 100th part of a measure laid down in the land of La Grenouille, which is supposedly an accurate division of a specified length of Longitude. for a more accurate description, see https://physics.nist.gov/cuu/Units/meter.html
  20. Is the most sensible idea not to pay a visit to a local dealer and have a word with the mechanics? - They are normally only too happy to answer questions like that. It may get them work in the future!
  21. This is the Logo for my multi-state, chemical conglomerate, Premier Chemicals (trading as PremChem) which operates in the South Eastern USA. This particular sign is for the entrance and fences of a gated area . The company has various divisions, such as Agricultural, Manufacturing, Petroleum, Confectionery, Drinks, Drilling, etc. If anyone wants to use the logo for their layouts, we will be delighted to open a branch as part of our expansion plans - so feel free to copy, resize and use. There are various ways of unloading Tank Cars such as direct into road tankers - so that can be as simple as some pipes on a hard-standing alongside a siding , eliminating the need for tanks and becoming a minimal-space industry, that takes up no room or expense. An excellent example of a multi-use siding for unloading boxcars, tankers, and hoppers can be found on Reinhards post here https://bigbluetrains.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=9554&start=90#p172186
  22. Wot! no mention of Drop-bears??
  23. Thanks Mike - that is rather nice. Who understands the vagaries of the internetty-webby-thingies?
