  1. I think the established 'manufacturers' still have old thinking in place, where if they produce lots of separate boxes people not in the know will happily buy up stuff to make a rule 1 train. To a reasonable extent this probably remains true.

However, with the up and comers like AS and the like paying more attention to our interests as modellers (rather than collectors or 'Rule 1' runners) the old thinking is starting to feel very old. That said, I don't think they would likely go down a route of boxed sets of Southern / BR(S) sets, due to inflation damaging our ability to buy so much in one package, but rather just make sure their production runs are balanced accordingly, and provide good information on what goes with what.

  2. Agreed. Despite Tesla's desire to do everything through a touchscreen, I really feel other manufacturers need to keep in mind that someone human is actually doing the driving, and needs to have switches for everything comfortably within reach of the driver, and the displays need to be comfortably visible such that only the slightest peripheral vision is needed to be able to have that one eye on the road ahead. Tesla just don't get that need at all.

  3. While I'm not a fan of FS, if it makes Hornby money enough to stay in business, then I think that's a good thing.

From my point of view, though, if they want my dollars, they just need to up their game in response to AS and other new kids on the block to make sure they produce high quality, high fidelity models that can appeal to the likes of me who are more concerned with accuracy and quality than having a complete collection of R numbers. Of course, it also helps if those models are of prototypes I'm interested in. Right now, there's virtually nothing coming that I care about from them.

  4. A bit off my radar in most scenarios, however i might just be able to justify an EWS one to go with the secondhand Hornby one I only just got... 🙄 😉

But, paying for the 56s I have on order will have to remain my priority.

Whilst I appreciate that you have placed “mistake” in quotes it would have been a commercial decision at the time based upon strength of business and market.

Yes sales might have been stronger with a three-car unit but equally we should bear in mind that these units all began life as two-car, the blue and Connex ones correctly represented later two-car variants (so were not missing trailers which should have been there) and that there will always be those who complain about price, accuracy, details and other points.

I would have had a three-car unit had one been available. I was happy with the two-car.

Given that the global situation might bring Chinese manufacture to an abrupt end and costs elsewhere are still rather higherI fear the hobby is not going to become any more affordable. If EFE Rail is able to offer a 3H DEMU in the near future I would expect a price in the region of £450 with DCC and sound extra. Personally I don’t need interior lighting but working front and rear markers / headcodes are a must.

If a unit was offered at that price in a suitable livery I would have one. I know others would be priced-out. And there’s a major limiting factor. Would there be enough interest at that price to justify a release?  Especially with an all-new centre trailer.

I seem to remember, sometime after the release, a comment from Chris at Kernow (though I am really not sure about it) that he felt that the three car should have been done, even though there were reasons not to (possibly financial in being able to afford the tooling). I gather that sales weren't as good as hoped, at least at the time, and that the three car was a missed opportunity to capitalize on the interest. I am sure if I'm wrong (and I may be) that Chris would correct me. Of course, any new run, especially in three car form, would not be cheap. But then, what in RTR in our hobby is these days?

No, I typed it from scratch. I heard it about 50 years ago, but I think the forum needs a good shaggy dog story every once in a while.

Ah, but that was about a bird, not a shaggy dog...

    😉

  7. I take it there's been no re-tooling to fix the slide gap on the roof at the back? It certainly looks like no change has been made for the lamp iron protrusion on the bunker to allow correct size coal rails to be fitted.

  8. I have in mind to get one 56 of my three on order to be sound fitted already, then the other two will have to have projects from other suppliers, Legomanbiffo will probably be one. Not sure about the other.

Are there any differences between the Romanian and later build variants vis a vis the sound the real thing makes?

If it had the bufferbeams from the Railfreight 20227 it would be perfect , Bachmann have said they have the tooling to do all the buffer beam variants but when we will see a suitable one who knows

Fortunately I've got a couple of scrap bodyshells which I'm using to piece together a loco for myself , I've used the green disc headcode loco as a base , tablet catcher cab off the old tooling with the face of the new tooling one (so I can use the lighting boards) and it will have the buffer beams from the Railfreight one to create a 'proper' Scottish one

I've tried to identify the difference between 057 and 115 in available online pictures, however apart from the height of the (?) multiple working plug, I can't see what the differences are. Can you/anyone perhaps describe the differences in the pipework and snow plough brackets in more detail (if not somehow show them on a picture)?
