MMP do an etch detail set that includes new window frames MMP I do not know if they are drawn specifically for the Heljan 47 or are from Davids MMP 47. Would be fun slicing off the old frames

I have now painted the bufferbeam detail at both ends. I did the cutouts in the fuel tanks and added some pipework in one side. It will look a lot better when weathered. And a closer picture of the airpipes and the recepticle plate. It's going to be fun trying to match the yellow paint to the factory finish later. Forgot to say it's also numbered as 33105.

Thank's for the heads up on the buffers Stu. I was not going to replace the buffers as for once I do like the Heljan ones! I have a picture of a 33/1 buffered up to a 47 and the buffer heads match so assume they were the same size?

I have now added the pipes behind the airpipes and the plate and recepticle for the bottom of the airpipes to sit in. Still haven't touched the other end yet. Will have a go at doing a bit more to the tank recess next I think.

Well I am suitably refreshed after a week in Switzerland so lets get back to a bit of modelling

Those who went to Bristol saw my latest project to convert a Heljan 33 to a 33/1. I have used some spare DJH southern highlevel air pipes and JLTRT MU castings. There is still some more pipework to make and the metal plates over the lail lights which hold the lower end of the airpipes. The corridor buffer is a corridor connection from MMP that I cut the top off and added some rod behind to fix it to the bufferbeam. The drophead buckeye is a metal Kadie that I cut a slot into the shaft with a cutting disc until it was a tight fit over the Heljan coupling so it stays horizontal on it's own without the need for a pin, like the real thing uses. The bufferbeam airpipes are from JLTRT and are the style that fit under the bufferbeam from their 24.

If you read this tonight I am just letting you know that I will have a surprise loco at Bristol on Sunday. I am sure you will like it

If you read this after Sunday you will have to wait a week for a picture as i am on holiday next week.

I certainly did not want a 1/43 ice cream David, I was thinking where is the rest of it. I needed a bigger one to fill the plate to fit the other 50 odd candles on

I am affraid the kit has nothing for the exhausts so your on your own there. I used some brass tube with a split pin soldered top and bottom to secure it in the whitmetal front. I then superglued some fine mesh over them.

I did drive them both down here on parcel duties.

Such a shame none got preserved

I think I have done everthing I am going to do on my 128 Westdale parcel car. Just don't look too close at the boxes and things underneath as they are not quite what they should be. As usual it still needs a bit of muck round it to bring out the underframe a bit.

£80 is a very reasonable price for what you get in the detail kit on it's own, but add this to the cost of the Heljan model and some JLTRT buffers then it does start to add up a bit.

JLTRT do sell their buffers separatly now but you do have to know what you want. Best thing is to ring them on 01294 222988 They are nice buffers but they will need drilling out with a pillar drill and I cut them off the sprue with a reinforced cutting disc.

As for the windows I wonder if from Heljan they are not pushed in far enough. I said earlier that I did cut out the cab door windows and glue those in flush. It did cross my mind if it was worth doing the same for the front screens but thought better of it.

Well I think that's about it now Can't think of anymore to do, but who knows. I have decided to add the white marks on the bogies for checking if there are any cracks. Also added some oil streaks and painted the brake blocks just to bring out a bit of detail.

Now I have a request. I don't know if you have noticed but Heljan put pantograph type windscreen wipers at one end and straight ones at the other. I don't suppose anyone with a green pre-TOPs 47 wants to do a swap as I really need the staight ones all round. So if anyone is going to Bristol and could do a swap with the wipers I would be very gratefull

I don't know exactly when the diagonal step piece was added but there is a picture in a book of D1734 I think, new with them, dated 1965. I am sure you should have them on.

I have now got the buffers from JLTRT so have made these up and added a DJH lampiron to one each end. 47091 should have 2 one end and one the other but I only had 2 in my scrap box . I took the wheels out and painted the face of them Frame Dirt ready for weathering. Then I masked up the cast inner bogie as best I could before spraying the frames. I also found 2 DJH coupling guards so added these behing the coupling infront of the handbrake linkage on the bogie.

All that remains now is the weathering to really bring out the detail of the underframe, probably tomorrow

My 128 chassis is also getting painted now as it's also got it's buffers added at last.

Most of the stuff Mark is in a big holdall over my shoulder on the back seat. It sounds daft but the fuller it is the better it sits there and does not get buffeted by the slight breeze that gets past the fairing at 90

These any good Ozzyo? The Heljan sideframe ain't that bad for a one piece moulding but the inner coil spring should have a flat on it at the top that's missing. I also did mill away a bit of the lifeguard and that improved the corners no end.

I have now just about finished the bogies and I made a fire pull as it was bugging me that 47309 did not have one and it does show a fair bit being red and white.

Ozzy the bogie detail set is £78.60 from MMP. If you go back to page 10 of this thread there are some pictures of when I did my other Heljan 47 that still has the original sideframes if that's any good. Or do you want the 2 together?

I have done a little bit more to 47091. I have made both sets of bogie sideframes now but still have the brake linkages and airpipes on the side of No 1 end bogie to do. Today I removed the cab door windows from the glazing and put them back in a bit flusher than they were as they do not sit very well at the top. Whilst I was at the glazing I added a strip of silver painted plasticard to the top of the open drivers window. I have also painted the silver bits on the front of the yellow end to replicate the picture earlier of 47091. Also painted a black outline to the headcode glazing that I think improves the look of it. The eagle eyed amoungst you may have noticed on the rad slats that 2 of them are silver. When I weathered the roof I did not notice that 2 of them were turned over. When I turned them back over they were still nice and silver but looks just like there had been 2 replacement louvres added so I thought they could stay silver.

the MMP tank you have done who Transfers did you use to complete the model??

Gazza, the transfers were from Fox. A sheet that had black stars, another with black tank numbers, another for tanks that had the Hazchem labels, small yellow CC and the No Naked Lights lettering next to them, and a set of overhead flashes and finally a sheet that has wagon repair stencils that is over the 2 black stars. By the time you got that lot you could have bought another tank kit!

The Hazchem number 1270 on the Fox sheet is just right for the mid 70's as latter on they changed it to 1220 or 1202 I believe from memory. I am sure Appleby does Hazchems with the later numbers. You can view all the Fox sheets on their website now thankfully.

Recently went from Oxford to a running session at Bourne End and managed 6 locos (3 Heljan's in that lot ), 2 small motorized P.Way vehicles, 4 Warflats and 40! 10ft wheelbase wagons. Could have took more as I still had a pannier empty! With 44 wagons behind a pair of JLTRT 20's I thought that was enough . It did all look nice behind the Heljan 33 as well. Not surprisingly my bike did pull a wheely pulling away from a roundabout as I opened it up a bit too quickly, made the old ticker miss a beat . Some people say I need a trailer but I disagree.

Good to see you back on 47s! How did you get the Heljan buffers off the earlier one you replaced - do they actually come off the bufferbeam moulding or have you just hacked them off? With all the pipework exposed once the buffer beam is off the chassis, I'm worried about damaging it if I'm not careful!

The buffers just pull out of the bufferbeam quite easily. If you want to remove the bufferbeam there are 2 screws at the back but the only way to remove them is to take the bogie out first. I am still waiting for someJLTRT buffers to replace the Heljan ones like I did on 47309.

Superb pictures Gonzo. That's the first 3/4 shot I have seen of 47091 complete with plates. Should I do the shiney bits on the front? That's also the best shot of 20029 I have seen. Looks like I modelled mine just the day before your picture whilst it still had both handrails on the end

Today I have added the air and steam pipes to one end and narrowed the tanks which makes a vast improvement I think. Also added 2 DJH spare castings for the bodyside water filler conduit that Heljan missed off.

Put the transfers on the MMP "A" tank tonight. I made the ladders so they can hinge up out of the way for when I weather it with the air brush later. I just had visions of spraying black down the sides and having a nice ladder pattern on the side of the tank.

Spent the afternoon finishing off the MMP bogie sideframe replacement. I just hope the 47 doesn't strip a gear as the front and back crossmember have to be glued to the sides thereby making removal very difficult. I think it's coming along nicely though.

These Miniatronics Yeloglo LED's are deffinatly the best I have seen for headcodes the only snag is there is not a UK agent as far as I know. On the Miniatronics website it says Sunningwell Comand Control was a dealer but I am sure they are no longer a stockist. I did iorder mine straight from the Miniatronics website and had good service but the postage was like $18 and then the import and VAT put another £18 (I did have some light bulbs from them as well in this price). It worked out at about £70 for 5 LED's and 40 16v bulbs! But they are so good we might just have to put up with it.

The crest on the 47 is indeed a new one Mike. Well I say new, it's off an old Woodhead sheet that actually still had a bit of sticky on them! The numbers are from HMRS and the data panal is Precission decals. The crests are actualy a little bit bigger than the Heljan ones. The 47 body could do with a bit more distresing on the sherwood green realy so might have a go later.
