Hi James,
Good to see you over here. Like Peter I also still visit your website now and then to see whats been happening. It's great to see the 377 finished and in action. It's a lovely looking model.
What else have you been up to?
Keep up the good work.
Cheers

Godd evening,
37412 is coming on nicely, it's nice to see her in her old colours. I currently have a 412 WIP which will be modelled in her Transrail days.
Following with interest.

Hi Neil,
Looks pretty good. One thing i would suggest however would be wash over the dirt on the RES NBA, this would then leave it recessed in the roller shutter doors.
Purely a suggestion, otherwise good work.

I give up!
Anyway, as I said before, you've done a great job there Grimley. (Go on, slap some paint on, you know you want to!!!)
cue embarassed smiley
I've just been reading back through the Aberdeen Kirkhill thread and have just seen the section on the wheel lathe.
Apologies to flood.

Hi Grimley,
Blimey the model of the wheel lathe is looking good. Not seen something like that tackled on a depot layout before.
Will be following this with interest.

Thanks Mick,
It's been going on for ages this layout. Is it possible to take this long over building a micro layout!?
I've been following the progress of New Bryford with much interest. it's really looking good. Once I get my camera back up and running I'll be back here with a bumper update. The board and layout have changed quite a bit compared to the old archive photo I posted in the OP.

Hi Wayne
Nice idea and looking forward to the updated pics, whats the plan with the scenery and buildings??
Neil
Thanks Neil,
The buildings will all be low relief structures based around various steelworks buildings (many thanks to Brian R for the CD of pics!). I made a start on these some time ago and I'm hoping to show them soon. One building will be a covered loading/unloading 'shed' for want of a better word, this forms part of a much larger building. The rest of which is off scene.
The plan for the scenery is to try and capture the rugged, grimy, run down looking nature of a steelwroks site. I'm hoping to have plent of junk dotted around as well. The area below the track at the front was going to have some of bank sloping down as I'd like to get some greenery in there as well. We'll see about that when we get there though.
Thanks for looking. I hope you'll be back when it's updated.
Cheers,

Good morning,
This thread will hopefully show the progress of my small shunting layout themed around a steelworks based in South Wales. This will be my first attempt at this type of layout and I thought I would tell my story here and share it with anyone else out there who may be looking into this kind of layout. I've become attached to them in the last couple of years. Those who have seen the likes of Marc Smith's Hendre Lane and Wales, Rails, Rain and Steel for example will know what can be achieved in a small space, even in OO gauge.
The idea for this layout started way back towards the end of 2009 when i stripped some pallets for the timber to use as frames (I was on a tight budget!), then I had remembered two spare boards up in the attic which I had built for another project that quite frankly wasn't going to happen. Then having seen what Marc did with Hendre gave me the idea for something smaller and at the same time I realised that I had more steel traffic related rolling stock compared to other stuff. Bingo! The idea for a steelworks theme was born, this layout uses just one scenic board out of the two bare boards.

Looking good in the dark Neil. I haven't thought about lighting much on my layouts as I'm not really an electronics man, but I think I'll look into it now.
Look forward to seeing more.

Hi Marc,
I've just come out of the attic having been juggling around my buildings on Dragon Steels (still dont know if that's going to be the actual name yet! Thoughts!?).
I'm puzzling over what to do for one of my scenic breaks. The right hand side of the layout has a road overbridge and the left side part of a rail served loading/unloading shed. Would you by any chance have a pic showing the end of yours where you have your rail connected shed? I'm just wondering how you blended it in as that was one of the things puzzling me and stalling my progress amongst other things.
We should defo arrange that beer soon too?
Cheers

Thanks neil,
Ah ha, so it seems I did miss something. I wasn't aware aunti Vi did 37800.
That clears things up. Thanks very much, and once again please forgive my ignorance.
-
Afternoon,
Forgive my ignorance but have I missed something? I see 37800 has been mentioned, which loco are you using as a base model Neil?
The locos I've seen so far look good indeed. I really need to get my new charger so I can get some of mine up.

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for the extra info and pics of the Sturgeon. I knew I shudn't have got rid of all my old Hornby flats!
It's a very interesting project and it seems to look the part.
Cheers

Hi Kevin,
Very nice work on the layout. I enjoyed reading about it Model Rail. Your Sturgeon looks very nice, based on an old Hornby Freightliner flat you say? Could you provide further details of how you carried out this build? One would say it could have a thread of it's own!?
Look forward to seeing more.

Hi Neil,
Nice looking layout. Cav has done a lovely job on some of your stock.
I've been looking at some nice layout pics lately and they have inspired me to get up into the attic and crack on with mine. I left it at the adding the buildings stage. It's only a small steelworks based layout and yet it's been ongoing for nearly three years!
Looking forward to seeing more.

Hi Marc,
Its was good to see you once again at the L&B show last weekend. I was well impressed with the layout and it has indeed been an inspiration (and a kick up the backside) to get up into the attic and get to work on my buildings.
The atmosphere you have created on your's is very nicely done, I'm liking the setting of a dark, wet night. You have done a brilliant job on it.
I'll look forward to seeing it again some time.
Cheers,
PS: Did you get the reply I sent to an inbox message I missed?

Hi Wayne,
Other half getting in the way of your precious modelling already eh
and valuable drinking time
... No she's pretty good really!... As far as modelling goes I've been a bit lazy of late but seeing yours progress has prompted me to get on with it. Seeing pauls layout at the Cardiff show was a real kick into gear as he's completed this since first discussing it a few meetings ago!
My buildings are mostly low-relief.
The Slaters corrugated' date=' comes in the usual A4-ish sized sheets.
There's a lot less detail than the Wills. But the Wills stuff is such a small piece,
you end up with lots of joins.
I've used the 7mm scale corrugations, because to my eye,
it looks a bit like box-section sheet material, in 4mm scale.
With Slaters stuff, it's very thin, and needs laminating - at leat 3 layers,
or it will tend to warp. I've used plasticard off-cuts + strips,
to laminate the back of one large building....
mind you, it still warped slightly so I then mounted it,
with PVA, onto mounting board, while keeping it flat with some heavy books
(SWMBO's gardening books, not my precious railway books ) whilst it dried.
Only the loading shed, and the rusty corrugated iron building (slaters 4mm corrugations)
are modelled "whole".
Hope this helps?[/quote']
Thanks marc, all of that helps a lot!... As I type this reply my scenic board is sitting behind me with the mock up of the first building to built in place, I've also got a few pieces of stock out to play with. I much prefer this method of planning rather than the computer based stuff you can get these days!
I'm looking forward to getting on with things now, so once I'm happy with things I'll post up a loooong overdue update in my thread!
All the best,
Wayne

Hi Marc,
Thanks for the speedy reply and info on your buildings!
Yeah, I missed the last meet because I got back late with the other half! I spoke to Brian ® and it seemed to have been a good one?!... As for buildings, at the moment I have wills corrugated steel and asbestos sheeting for mine, I haven't seen the slaters stuff so I'll have a look around.
I did have an old peco engine shed in the attic somewhere, but when I found it - it was damaged so I threw it away (stupid boy!!)
One more question on the buildings if I may... Have you built them as shells and cladded over the top? If so, what have you used. I'm looking for ideas to save on weight here.
As for finishing mine before yours we'll have to see! It's nice to see you've made some good progress though. What I need is a nice deadline to give me a kick up the backside!!
Following with much interest!
Cheers Marc,

Hi Marc,
Those buildings are coming along nicely! You're making some good progress with this one, I really have to get a shift on with mine. I'm still playing with cardboard mock ups!!...
What have you used for those, some look like to be bits of peco engine shed? The grey one at the bottom for sure... Will look forward to seeing those in place!
Following this with much interest!

Hi Marc,
The layout is coming on a treat! I'm following it with interest. I have a qusetion regarding your SPAs... I'm tinkering with several of these at the moment as I need some SHAs (a variation) for my layout and am wondering about the articulation provided on these wagons. I've been told that some people have just fixed them to the wagon floor with no swiveling action.
What did you go for, and have they been built straight from the pack or have you added any other bits to them?
Cheers, hope to see you at the pub on Thursday!

Hi Marc,
Really liking the look of this one! It's looking good so far...
I've started digging mine back out again, although I'm thinking of reducing the size of the board now. At the moment it is 4' x 18'' but it's a bit of a lump to carry round myself and there's not even any buildings on it yet!! Plus it would make transport to any shows easier!
I'm also a little confused (forgive my stupidity!), you say you ar going to add a sector plate at the right hand end to enable running round of trains. Does this mean that the final layout will be longer than 6 feet? 6 feet is around the length I was looking at because of my available space, but at the moment my running round forms part of the main board (albeit not laid permanent yet)! I'd be interested in your thoughts around this as like yourself I would like the odd mainline loco to appear in addition to gronks!
Keep up the good work, oh and thanks for the mention in the article!
Cheers

Looking good,
Good to see another South Wales based layout... Yes you deffo need a at least one 37/9 on the layout for working steel traffic. I'm currently building one using the Bachmann model with scratchbuilt roof... See my workbench thread, just follow the link in my sig.
Cheers.

Evening chaps,
Haven't forgotten about this, I'm just getting on with the wiring at the moment but I'll have something worth getting the camera out for soon.
