  1. Been a while since I've updated, but just to say I'm still working away on this!

I wasn't happy with some of the building seen in earlier shots. The warehouse overpowered this end of the layout so I've moved it to the other side of the bridge and put in smaller buildings. This will mean I have to redo the bridge this end.

On the weightbridge i have a question, looking for advice on how i show the fixings of the track to the weightbridge. Also what equipment would be the weightbridge hut.

  2. Around 2004-6 ish Rail Express did a set or articles on loco liveries.

I've found the set on Railfreight sectors but can't seem to find the one on the first version of the Network South East Livery. (I've found the one on revised NSE)

Any clue to which edition of rail Express covered this would be really helpful.

    Thanks

Aha, that explains why D5515 came to mind, many thanks Grahame (big fan of your Flickr site BTW, right 'up my street'!) I've just checked my copy of Strathwood's 'Looking Back at Class 31 Locomotives' and guess what, there's a photo of D5501 with white surrounds and yellow panels in the intro which I'd forgotten about! Dated September 1963.

David, either D5501 or D5515 would make an interesting change from the usual liveries, although it would require adding yellow panels to a renumbered Hornby model and I can't be sure whether either of them gained the panels by mid-1962.

Regarding the production locos, I've looked through my six volumes of Strathwood's 'Sixties Diesel and Electric Days Remembered' and only D5645 on King's Cross Stabling Point on 25/2/62 fits the bill (in Volume 1). Captions have to be treated with caution but the surrounding locos would seem to support the date. The only other candidate I found was D5830 at Potters Bar on 21/4/62, in Brian Haresnape's 'British Rail Fleet Survey 4'. Both of these are technically on the 'wrong ER main line' of course but my bookcase is heavily biased towards the Western Region in general and diesel-hydraulics in particular so I'm not best placed to answer questions on 1960s Class 31s! :D But at least I've tried......

Neil, thanks for you assistance - I’ve got a copy of the Haresnape book somewhere so I will take a look. But the answer does seem to be that some 30/31 did start to receive yellow warning panel early - May 1962.

    I will keep looking.

Neil, both D5501 and D5515 received yellow warning panels whilst still sporting white window surrounds. D5517 also lost its white window surrounds at least a year before receiving the yellow warning panels. As far as I can tell only D5513 and D5514 received full yellow ends whilst in green livery, and of course D5518 but that was another story! Rail On-Line has a picture of D5515 on its site and Colour-Rail used to have a slide of D5501.

I have quite a few shots of green with syp images on my Brush Veteran Flickr site which may be of use to Windjabbers.

    Thanks

What I’m specifically after is an example of loco getting it’s yellow warning panel before June 1962.

So have had a very enjoyable good look at Brush Veteran Flickr site. Has a picture of D5656 at York May 62! Was a 41A loco at the time so not EA, but does start to answer the question.

    Thanks

  5. Very basic question, but this is my first go.  I am fitting the Hornby TTS to Hornby Class 08.

I assume that the speaker fits at the grill end but the padding seams to rub on part of the motor.

What do I do? Is it ok to remove that padding or is that important for the whole thing to work?

    Thanks

  6. I was looking at what shows local to me were likely to be happening when I found the following note on the St Neots MRC website.

Don't think there is a thread running already on this, sorry if I have missed it.

East Anglian Model Railway Exhibition Update:

It is with regret that we have decided that we will no longer organise the big East Anglian Model Railway Exhibition. St Neots MRC will go back to running a one-day exhibition in a local school, community centre or similar venue. We are aiming for September/October starting in 2022.

Further details will follow when a venue and date are confirmed.

  7. Progress is always slower over the summer. Working on the factory offices. I’m going for a rendered wall that is failing. Have got this far. Needs more work but pleased with it so far. David

  8. some more steady progress on painting things - the archers at the back are now a nice engineering blue and the pub is starting to be toned down. Both need more work but 2 hours sat in the garden painting while listen to the ‘your dead to me podcast’ has got me this far.

Thanks David, I've been reading The Art of Weathering, also highly recommended and trying those methods. I'm sure I have that Ian Rice book somewhere.

That building is pretty good for a first attempt, the rust on the roof looks great too was that from the same book?

i think my main problem is the plasticard I'm using.

    Thanks for your  comments.

The roof is done using Humbrol maskol and a copy of couple roof's I've seen near me on my lockdown walks.  I would like to add some moss to it, but trees and greenery will come after the building have all been painted.

Is the main brick colour just the unpainted sheet? I'm wal! Building and have got Railmatch light and dark brick and I'm struggling to get a look I'm happy with. I havent used Wills sheets though, the stuff I have hasn't got a lot of relief to the mortar courses.

Yes I’ve just painted directly on to the Willis sheet. Some of the other building are with slaters but both give you a mortar course.

It’s all been a bit trial and error. The reason I picked this building was it’s the easiest to redo if I totally messed it up!

Iain Rice’s book on this from

Wild Swan I’ve found very good.

    Hope this helps

The brickwork looks great on that building David. What colours did you use to overpaint the wall?

    Thanks for your comment.

It's the first time Ive had a go at paining anything.  It has turned out much better than I expected.

Although there were time when I was doing it that I was thinking that this isn't going to work!

The base colours are Humbrol matt colours - white, black and a couple of greys.

There are two brick colours I used. Railmatch  Dark Brick and Light brick.

Then the mortar wash was a Humbrol light cream mixed with white a tiny bit of black and the diluted and rubbed off.

I think its worked really well on the Willis brick work .

    Hope this helps.

Your painting has really brought that to life, the change from Sundays picture is incredible. I like the idea of painting the different coloured bricks a strident colour then overpainting with the brick red.

To think that I have been messing around with mixing different colours of brick....

Thanks for your comments. Its the first time Ive had a go at painting any building.

I got the idea from Iain Rice in his book - Modelling with Plastic Structures Kits, which I have found really helpful.

  13. Me:- ok so I don’t need anymore 4mm ex-GER locos. I have enough!

Also me:- This has just arrived from cdcmodels. Really really impressed both with cdcmodels (very helpful) and the model itself.

The J67/9 are a hideously complicated class so this was a good option for me. It’s basically a way of getting a bespoke locomotive body.

This is one of the class that was long term resident of Cambridge, although it doesn’t to seem to have done much work after the diesels (Class 03’s) arrived in 58.

Just need to sort the chassis out now. Does any of the terrier chassis offer a DCC option?

But that’s it no more ex GER loco’s

Oh look they also do the J68.....

The J67/9 are a hideously complicated class but making best use of 3D printer cdcmodels offers a wide range of the J67/9 and J68 class.
