  1. Hi Chris,

    I really like the latest shed detailing products especially the GWR coal tubs scanned at Didcot.

    I have a model of Bristol Barrow Road engine shed and would be interested to know if Modelu could model the Ash disposal 'tubs' that were used at most of the LMS sheds that had the concrete tower ash disposal plants?

    I have included photos of the two types taken by myself at Carnforth a few years ago.

    The tall version ran on narrow gauge tracks alongside the ash disposal pits whilst the short version ran along tracks in the pit.

    The black and white photo is of the ash pits at Barrow Road showing both types in position.

    I would need a number of each and am prepared to discuss a commission.

  2. I have just converted the above model to P4.  Before doing so I tested it with DC and it ran very well. The model was described as DCC fitted but the decoder, which I presume is a Hornby produce did not work.  Using JMRI Decoder Pro the identity of the decoder showed as #522 - decoder manufacturer not found.  An internet search suggests this means the decoder is faulty.

    I fitted a DCC Concepts Zen Black V12 decoder with 8pin harness and set the address as 68 as required by a customer. The model performed well using Decoder Pro.

    However when placed on my layout which uses NCE equipment the model would not go.  A retest on Decoder Pro and it worked fine again.

    I have taken the model to a friends layout today which uses NCE equipment and the model does not work.

    Has anyone any suggestions.  It works using JMRI Decoder Pro but does not work using NCE equipment.

    I have carried out a large number P4 conversions and fitted decoders. I always programme the decoder address using Decoder Pro but this is the first model that will not work on my NCE equipped layout.

  3. I've never had a problem with Colin and he's always chatty and very helpful.

    I email him with my order and say I will pay by card over the phone once he confirms the items I want are available and in stock.

    He has been operating on his own during covid so on occasions I've had to contact with a reminder.

  4. Tim,   There were a number of 15ton and 20ton weighbridges in the Bristol area when I first started work as a Weights and Measures Inspector in the late 1960s and your 12ft 6in x 8ft 3in weighbridge plate would certainly take a two axle short wheelbase lorry even if it was originally for a horse drawn cart.  I tested a lot of weighbridges including Pooley - mostly on railway linked properties - and Avery equipment.

  5. I only met Terry once at a presentation he did for the Tewkesbury Railway group a few years ago when he kindly let me have copies of a few photos he had taken around Bristol Barrow Road engine shed.

    RIP Terry.

  6.

    I am seeking some advice on the correct wiring of Pentrollers.

    I have been donated a Panel mounted Pentroller and a Handheld Rover Unit. The Panel Unit is contained in a plastic box. Inside this box there is a small square circuit board fixed to it's base. The box has 2 white cables which enter the box at the rear. These 2 cabled have been cut off on the outside, Each cable has 4 wires, one red, one black, one blue and one yellow. The 4 wires from one cable are soldered to the small circuit board. The 4 wires from the other have the red and black screwed to a terminal block on this small circuit board whilst the blue and yellow are loose.
    The photos below hopefully explain:-

    I believe the small circuit board is associated with the Rover Unit and the cable with the 4 soldered wires is intended to go to a 5 pin DIN plug for the Rover. Is this correct.

    I believe the wires in the other cable are:-
    Blue = AC input
    Yellow = AC input
    Black = DC output to track
    Red = DC output to track
    Is this correct?

    Finally the terminal blocks - one on the rear of the panel unit, the other on the small circuit board - have 2 terminals marked AC.
    Which of these do the loose blue and yellow wires go to?

    Robin, the first six have Digitrains sound and I tried a YouChoos for the last one as a comparison. All on Zimo decoders with large speaker in the tender and a sugar cube below the chimney to move the sound forward a bit. Jury is still out on the comparison!

    Regards John E.

    Interesting John. Is the large speaker in the tender the original Bachmann speaker?

    Robin.

  8. Steve, please pass on my thanks to John for that information, I really must get down to the job of ballasting Barrow Road but I'm enjoying making some scenic units at the moment - that's may excuse for the lack of ballast on my layout.

    Steve,  what ballast and method of glueing does John use?

  10. It's gone a bit quiet on this thread so I'll add a few more photos taken on the 9th June 1987. Here are a few more taken at Murder Coombe - I love that name:-)
