In August 1973 a coal train from Bickershaw colliery derailed at the Springs Branch end of the branch, the colliery engine, Rodney, was sent down to recover the underailed wagons and return them to the colliery, seen here on its return to Bickershaw.

    Manchester Victoria, 20 August 1999.

Driver Roy Smith, ex Springs Branch, Southport, loco instructor / inspector and finally a manager on Merseyrail. After retiring returned to driving for a private company. When in the cab as a loco inspector would always want to drive the train, he would drive a herd of cattle if he could. A true gentleman and railwayman , sadly no longer with us.
