I'm afraid it is. A very nice one at that, NRM's City of Truro to be precise and no I'm not going to weather it!!! First impressions are that she certainly has as presence about her and looks stunning in her GWR livery. A bit surprising to see that she's not fitted with sprung buffers and a slightly naff looking coal load, but it doesn't detract from a superb model.

Still got to add the details to her and give her a good run in, she'll keep me amused until the other-half finally gets here from Leeds and then I'll be seriously distracted for sometime

It's been a while since I've updated my blog. Not a lot has been happening apart from commission work namely 4 of my Bulleid fleet have gone North to there new home (Eddystone, 249 Squadron, 603 Squadron and Saunton) in various states of dirtiness

Below is a picture of 603 in works minus tender and lurking behind is Bionic Bulleid 3 (more on that later):

My current spate of T9's is complete with both 30288 & a reworked 30726 Here's a quick snap I took of the finished 228 in the fresh air:

Bionic Bulleid 3 alias 34014 Budleigh Salterton is finally finished, looking more heading for the scrapyard condition here!

With this one out of the way it allows me to get on with some more commissions - couple more really dirty Bulleids (Exeter & Anti-Aircraft Command) and a 5,250 gl Tender destined for Mr Bluebell Railways - Sir Archibald Sinclair.

All the mods I've done on previous 5,250gl tenders have been done on this one, as well as being equipped with twin ladders It is currently in the paintshop in between coats of Brunswick (should progress over the Easter weekend)

I have a couple more personal projects which are waiting to get underway, firstly is 34050 Anti-Aircraft Command in malachite green and secondly another 5,250 gl tender destined for I'm not sure yet either 34031 Torrington or one of the Rebuilt Merchant Navies...
  4. toboldlygo
While Volcanic ash has stopped air travel and caused mayhem at the airports and the wife to be is busy with business and family issues up North. I've been beavering away with Bulleids as usual

34001 Exeter is on the final stretch and will be finished shortly.

34049 Anti-Aircraft Command is currently being tweaked.

And for a change work has finally commenced on a Malachite Green B of B, using a donor 21C159 (Sir Archie) I'm recreating 34050 Royal Observer Corps in it's original guise (as I've done it in Rebuilt form).

It's currently in bits, with a new smokebox door (courtesy of BB1 spares) The etched smokebox numberplate has been fitted and it has lost it's Sunshine lettering and numbering, ready for renumbering and naming once it's had a bit of spraying done

As I mentioned at the beginning of the post the volcanic ash, here's a photo of Thursday's Sunset taken with my phone (at a certain Airport )

Back from my hols and back to trains. Finally completed is Urie (5,000gl) Tendered N15 30803 Sir Harry le Fise Lake - extremely dirty now and runs ever so sweetly

Here's Sir Harry with the 3,500gl tender so you can see the difference, this ones up for rehoming

Presently on my workbench is a Hornby 08 Shunter, that's a bit of a squealer, on investigation there's no lubrication present, so it's been lubricated up.

Up next is another West Country, in this case (Air Smoothed Casing) 34038 Lynton, which is going to be dirtied up good and proper.
  6. toboldlygo
    ... mad that is

My workbench has been a flurry of activity, lots of locos have passed over it in the last month.

First up here's another shot of Schools 30920 Rugby, basking in the sun:

    Then there's T9 30117:

Next a reworked WC 34023 Blackmore Vale, complete with 71A (Eastleigh) shedcode, grime and coal:

And finally my first tank engine renumbering M7 30049:

All of which will be finding themselves on a certain auction site over the coming months

But, I'm not finished there, there's another Bullied on my workbench. Another 'Wilton' donor which is currently stripped of all it's identity and waiting it's new one - 34019 Bideford (I've already got a Bideford, however not renumbered by my hands ), it had a mechanical gremlin which I've sorted out, now just got to retest and then I can get on with the renumbering etc.

And before I forget LMS Twin 10000's derailing issue was sorted, purely by dismantling the bogies and opening up the holes where the wheels go into the frames

    That's all for now TBG

Another week flies by and another dirty Bulleid rolls off the production line. In this case 34093 Saunton

Also another kit build is nearly finished, in this case a Parkside Dundas SR Plywood sided CCT van will post some photos once it is finally assembled. Had a slight problem with the floor being twisted, but have sorted it out, using a bit of creative thinking

Shock of shocks though I've ordered another kit to build....
  8. toboldlygo
It's another superb kit from the often overlooked 1/48th Scale Military Miniature Series by Tamiya and being Tamiya it makes for quite a quick build.

The Kit is fairly new - this version is from 2018 according to Scalemates.

Yep I started it on Saturday too

The only niggle with the kit is there are a couple of visible ejector pin marks on the side frames of the lower hull. Fortunately they are raised, so with a few swipes with a sanding stick they disappear

The build - blink and you'll miss it, the kit goes together very quickly.

    Lower Hull Construction..

Adding the drive wheels, sprockets, idlers, etc..

The lower hull goes MIA for a bit at this point - it will be back

Upper hull - straight forward, but a lot of small parts that can get eaten by the carpet monster..

    Turret goes together beautifully too..

Lower Hull is back from paint, after a few coats of Olive Drab - Vallejo Model Air Medium Olive is a close match to Tamiya's colour call out.

I'm painting the road wheels at this point..

Upper hull & turret in undercoat (Nato Black FYI)

Tracks fitted - don't rush these.

With the upper hull. turret & barrel back from paint - it's time to unite them and start adding the detailing parts..

Adding those last parts before weathering..

Fresh from the spray booth - just weathering powders to add.

Nearly ready for her big reveal.

    Photo's taken under natural light..

    And a cameo...

Well a new RMWeb and a new start for the Bullied Nutters Lounge.

New beginnings, but pretty much the same content;)

First an update on the workbench

30803 Sir Harry Le Fise Lake is now finished and ready to enter service:

My first kit build is going along quite nicely the Parkside Dundas PMV kit has gone together pretty well so far and the various sub assemblies are painted. Many thanks to Graham (Muz) for his pointers as to where to find the appropriate transfers.

Also on my workbench, though I haven't made a start on it, is Rebuilt West Country 34100 Appledore. This is going to go through the weathering process.

    Layout Update

Not a lot to report here, except some track has been relaid on the Bulleid Branchline and the layout itself needs a good hoover after the recent work on the roof.

Better late than never, here's part 2 of the Tempest V build:

With some light fettling the wings were assembled and fitted to the fuselage.

Rudder, tail-planes & ailerons were added next:

The fuselage base for the canopy was also dry fitted at this point.

A cameo from her troublesome elder sister

    I had some aftermarket arrive..

Some parts painted & fitted. Plus prep done for painting.

Canopy assembled & prop assembled, plus resin exhausts
     test fitted.

    Let the painting begin..

With some help from my fellow RMWebbers a name has finally been decided on for Bionic Bulleid 3. Though not the clear winner in number of times it was suggested, I liked the sound of it (besides they will all get done eventually ) and that's what matters.

    Drum Roll Please....

....Bionic Bulleid 3 is going to be...

Oh yes, I was busy getting parts ready for paint - including masks..

Replacing the plastic aerials under the wings with something sturdier..

    Wings back from primer..

    Some painting done..

Main undercarriage bays spray Insignia White & masked.

    Wings sprayed and temporarily installed..

Masking up the fuselage for paint..

    Fuselage painted and unmasked..

    The Shack reassembled again..

A gloss clear coat added - and the fun begins..

A pot of parts left (minus the resin wheels)

The nightmare begins applying the decals

And a proper jig, after a final clear coat.

So far so good - you say..

In part 5 the nightmare begins...

Due to the rate of progress and an interesting turn of events, I thought it wise to make an additional update.

My completed commissions are winging their way north as I type and work has commenced on the next batch. The first of which is Original West Country 34020 Seaton with two more to follow - it's going to be a busy month. I've made good progress so far, so I should hopefully have her done by Tuesday.

My own Q1 33040 is finished and I've finally got round to fitting the etched plates to 30850 Lord Nelson, a bit of pig to do as the original Bachy ones are a tad to large and have to be cropped back to suit the Fox ones. I pleased with the end result. Photo's of both are in my gallery album. I've still got the etched plates to fit to 30865 Sir John Hawkins that'll be fun - not!

Aside from my Schools and Lord Nelson which are both awaitng their cabside numbers. I have two new rename and renumberings to do. First up is another Rebuilt West Country - 34101 Hartland and the second is something a wee bit special (that's a hint). I've had the nameplates for a while and I've just been waiting on a suitable donor, which I won on eBay tonight

I'm not going to say anymore on that one, till it's finished

    That's all for now
  14. toboldlygo
So much for 34100 Appledore being in the paintshop It currently lies totalled on the layout after it got knocked off the paint stand by yours truly and hit the floor smokebox first - it's not a pretty sight. Fortunately I have another donor...
  15. toboldlygo
Without realising it, I have gone a bit mad on T9's... some how I now have 7 of them:

30120 renumbered from a donor 30724 by TMC, I've recrested to it's final BR Late crest livery (TMC had it as preserved in BR Lined Black Early Crest), real coal in tender.

30288 being renumbered from 30285 on an early crest, currently being lightly weathered, front coupling pocket removed, still on workbench.

30310 as bought, except for real coal in tender.

30338 renumbered from a donor 30310, late crest, lightly weathered, real coal in tender.

30717 renumbered from a donor 30724, early crest, heavy weathered, real coal in tender.

30718 renumbered from a donor 30724, late crest, medium weathered, front coupling pocket removed, still on workbench, requires weathering tweaks, varnish and coal to complete.

30726 tender frames corrected, currently in bits having it's factory weathering tweaked, I've also removed the front coupling pocket.

The R27xx versions (30310 & 30724) have all had mods mentioned in earlier posts to vastly improve their running capablities. The R28xx versions didn't need anything doing on the loco's, but the tenders have required a little tweaking (frames on the 6 wheel and clearing the axle holes on the watercart for more play).

    Other news...

I have acquired enough track to complete the BBL, now just got to build it!!! It's celebrity flexi-track by the way, it featured in James May's Toy Stories!!! Finally on the Bulleid front all the bits are now here to complete 34014 Budleigh Salterton...
  16. toboldlygo
So on with the build, I'll keep the commentary to a minimum..

Resurrecting some elderly Tamiya XF-4 (Yellow Green) from the 1990's.

White Tack to do the wavy camo line.

Gloss Clear Coat (Tamiya X-22) applied.

Chosen Decal Scheme (above) and applying the decals (below)

    Semi-gloss coat applied.

First time using a metalliser paint on the drop tanks.

    Last bits ready to add.

However the P-47D needed to get dirty first and another first - using a Flory Models Dark Dirt Wash for the first time..

I also applied the wash to remaining parts..

    Final assembly and weathering begins.

Finished and the final reveal (and the return of the Shackleton MR.3 Cameo)

    Till next time

Finally finished 34028 Eddystone for a client whose exact words were 'just like I remember her in the 60's'

Bet you didn't realise that washing machines have a Dirty Cycle

Currently in the paint shop is LN 30865 Sir John Hawkins having a coat or two of varnish applied. Just coaling to do on her and she'll be finished.

On the workbench as I type this is another T9, a non-running 30724 brought off ebay that took less than 15 minutes to fix. Basically the screw that holds the motor assembly was loose!!! Runs beautifully now, had the necessary modifications and has been denumbered, it will become 30718 on a late crest and will of course be subjected to the dirty cycle.
  18. toboldlygo
No photos tonight, batteries for the camera are being recharged. So it'll be a brief update.

Rebuilt West Country 34001 Exeter is well on it's way to be truely filthy.

A re-gluing of an errant grill turned into a weathering job of sorts on my sole class 31 it's now a slightly weathered shade of Brunswick Green! It's also given me a chance to try out a different brand of aerosol Varnish, I'm really, really impressed with this stuff. I've used railmatch for quite sometime and usually had good results after a number of coats. I'm using Vallejo, it doesn't need as many coats and gives a very smooth finish and as it's Acrylic it dries a lot faster too (may be a problem when it's warmer).

The lining and late crest are done on oneside of the 5,250gl tender. I've just given it a quick flash over with Vallejo Satin Varnish to protect the lining when I do the otherside

Hopefully I'll do an update tommorrow, with some photo's. Now where did I put that sonic screwdriver?
  19. toboldlygo
Well after yesterday's mishap with Appledore. I decided to make a start on renumbering my latest T9.

Starting out with a narrow cab version (30724), I carried out the bogie mod, swapped the pipes round and adjusted the contacts on the tender wheels. Fitted the detail, removed the cabside numbers and flattened the smokebox numberplate down (has two raised rivets that need to be removed to ensure a good fit of the etched replacement). I fitted the etched plate, applied the new cabside numbers, power classification, shedplate (72A) and early totems (crests).

Yes she's 30717, I've also got the smokebox plate for 30718. Now comes the fun part of making her really dirty
  20. toboldlygo
Well it's been a week and most of that without RMWEB. It's meant that I've been able to get one loco finished (T9 30717) and another almost finished 34100 Appledore last seen plunging to it's demise off the painting table!!! As they say we have the technology, I had a spare donor thankfully.

All will be revealed as to what they look like when the final kinks are ironed out of RMWEB's server move. Little tip to the guys a server provider - use a bigger Hammer
  21. toboldlygo
Finally after what seems like an age, I'm making a start on Revell's take on the Shackleton - though in this case it's the MR.3 (Phase 3 version).

Which means for those not in the know - Nose wheel rather than a tail dragger, wing tip tanks and in the case of the Phase 3: 6 engines...

Forget following the instructions, each side of the fuselage is made from 2 parts - I decided to glue the two parts of each side together and using the bomb bay roof & wing spar section to ensure everything lined up, while the glue cured.

With the halves cured I busied myself building up the interior and adding weight to the nose - the instructions say 30 grams, I doubled it!

Now as you can see there's a circular hole underneath where the tail empernage goes, having going through the instructions and sprues thrice - there's no mention of it (must be from the AEW kit).

So I filled it up using styrene & Perfect Plastic Putty..

With the interior painted - I used Airfix and other references for the interior colours, rather Revell's. I installed the glazing.

    Far less interior than Airfix's

With the interior weathered using Tamiya Weathering Powders - the cockpit & rear cabin were glued in place (no tape needed either).

One last look at the interior, before the sides are glued together..

I only needed Tamiya Low-tack masking tape to hold the sides together while the glue cures.

Flashback to the AEW build - I deployed Insulating tape.

Finally with fuselage sides together, I checked the CofG..

I'm pretty much there with nose weight - I can still add more if needed

I may get some building done, but I'm waiting for some aftermarket to arrive for her

... well almost. Wiring, scenics still to do - hell I've still got to finish the main layout yet. I think I've created a monster, the layout now stands at 26' 6' x 11'! Comprising:

Phase 1 - the original twin loop and sidings and terminus station

Phase 2 - the return loop, underpass and overpass loops, turntable, terminus became through station and station halt at end of the return loop

Phase 3 - was tweaking the original layout from lessons learned on Phase 2, basically repositioning point motors underneath the track (where possible) and changing the entry point to the overpass to give a smoother entry for trains.

Phase 4 - the BBL or Bulleid Branchline, a new loop consisting of radius 4 curves and long radius points, connected to both Phase 1 and Phase 2. Designed and tested with my FIATrains LMS Twins to ensure smooth running and no derailments. It also has a removable section to allow access to the remaining loft space!!

These are composite photo's of the new construction, so they aren't perfectly aligned!

That's all for now, I'll have a loco update late
  23. toboldlygo
    On with part 3...

Progressed slowed to numerous railway commissions anyhow fresh from paint and after some touching up, I painted and fitted the engine exhausts..

I then masked up to do the partial invasion stripes..

Once everything was dry, I gave the Tempest a gloss coat of Tamiya Clear in prep for the decals..

Once this had cured I decaled the underside

.. and put it back in the box due to railway commissions.

Roll on 5 weeks later and recommenced decalling.

While doing the decals I started painting the prop.

Once the decals had dried sufficiently, I sealed them in with a few coats of Tamiya Flat Clear and gave the Tempest a few coats of Vallejo Oil Wash and then removed the masking.

As of today there's a plane and a lot of painted (or partially painted bits)

    That's all for now

    ...30850 Lord Nelson that is
