  1. As stated by many others Hornby decoders are no good for the Heljan 47's due to the high current draw that the motors need. They like to go up in smoke in no time. Bachmann 3 function decoders are what I have used in them with absolutely no problems but its all down to preference and budgets.

  2. A truly remarkable achievement by all who are involved. I can see Starcross and Dawlish Warren from my window across the estuary and at night you can see the tower lights where the work is happening. I will be using the line again to go and visit the girlfriend on a regular basis. Well done to all and a big thanks to 'Captain Kernow' for supplying us all with regular pictures, updates and all of the other things he has taken time to supply us with.

  3. Those sections look a little flimsy compared to the old wall - will there be more wall built up seaward of them?

Don't forget that those sections are strengthened with steel bars/rods inside. Possibly tougher to break than the original wall as that is likely to just be stone cemented together just like a traditional wall. Always open to being corrected though of course.

  4.

His other items must be limited edition as well then judging by some prices! Anyone want a 'Liner' 57.......

Edit: Going by the feedback it seems its yet another person who snaps up the limited editions and then sells them on with an even bigger mark up!

  5. Is extra protective material being dumped in the containers? Around the point of the yellow crawler-type-machine-thingy, as we're going technical.

I believe that they replace some of the material daily that gets 'knocked off' by the waves at high tide. The containers have certainly taken a battering since they have been in situ so keeping them brimmed/topped with stone etc will ensure that they continue to give some protection against the waves.

  6. 47746 below is my first Bachmann 47 and I'm pretty pleased with the way it's turned out. When I first saw the Bachie 47, those marker lights struck me as being way too big, but whether I'm just getting used to them or whether they're not so oversized after all (0.2mm I believe), I don't know, but looking at the front doesn't jar in quite the same way it used to for me.

The jumper cables on the front benefit from replacement with fine wire, and the addition of the tiny cable clips on the marker panel. Other than that, this was just a weathering job for me, apart from attaching the nameplates of course (with double-sided tape).

What struck me as I worked on it was how fine the moulding is in places compared to Heljan's offering, which has been my mainstay up to now. I think a few more Bachmann 47s might be in order, but it will take a while for me to replace all my Heljan ones, if I ever do.

    You mean 47745, not 746  :D

Just read the article about Leaford in Model Rail 150 and was interested to learn how you weather your loco's. It states that you paint the loco black then wipe it off. Just a couple of questions:

    1. Do you paint whole loco all at once or do it in stages.

    2. Which paint do you use ? is it acrylic or water based.

    3. Do you varnish loco once weathered.

    Thanks

    Dave

Your answers are on page 8. ;)

  8. This layout is awesome. I absolutely love it, the attention to detail is brilliant. I hope one day o be able to build something to the same quality standards as this. A shame it can't be joined with 'Waverly West'

  9. It isn't just model railways that go for silly prices. With my other hat on I have been trying for some time now to acquire some extra Lego road baseboards, specifically the proper light grey ones from the 1980's. EVERY SINGLE lot that has been listed on Ebay in the last few months has been snapped up by the same bidder (you can tell by the feedback number, same every time) using a snipe program in the last five seconds, he must have hundreds of them now.

Now tonight this guy's ruse is revealed as a seller is now offering quantities of them Buy It Now at vastly inflated prices and it is the same chap as the feedback number is identical. Clever stuff, buy every last one you can lay your hands on (thereby artifically inflating the market price for them) and then sell them again netting a mint in profit!!

(You may tell I am a tad miffed at this guy, unfortunately because I need a couple I have had to give in and buy three from him!!)

:icon_wow::icon_e_surprised: I have about 15 of those Lego boards still from my younger days. Might have to Ebay them i think.........

  10. Well it was the girlfriends birthday last month and i was looking at vouchers for her. Looked on Ebay and every single voucher had bids. The problem was that i wanted a ??50 voucher. The one i wanted had been bid upto ??63:icon_frustrated:!!! Do people on Ebay not think or are they just plain thick??:icon_what:

  11. Taken from the DCC Supplies website for those who couldn't be bothered reading..

The popular Electrak 2 now has a fixed version, the Electrak 3.

This DCC Compatible track cleaner works just like the popular DC only high frequency cleaners, but is safe to use with DCC equipped locomotives.

We have tested this device with popular decoders, (including sound) without any problems!

The Electrak works by generating a high voltage, high frequency signal that is current limited to about 2 mA.

Due to the current limit, almost anything that is attached to the rails (e.g. a motor in DC or a decoder in DCC) will act as a short circuit to the Electrak. Thus, loads on the rails normally short the generated signal. Current flows from the generator, out one wheel set, across the rail load, into the other wheel set, and back to the generator.

Due to the low impedances involved, there is very little voltage in this loop (hence its safety and compatibility with DC and DCC). When the Electrak encounters a spot in the track that does not provide a good connection to the Electrak wheels (i.e. a dirty spot), the full 216 volts of the generator appears across this high impedance.

This high voltage acts to break up the contamination, and thus clean the track.

The Electrak is particularly good at destroying oxide films. Any exposed metal will form a surface oxide coat. Some of these metal oxides are insulators (such as brass) while some oxides do have conductive properties (such as ???nickel silver??? rails). Most metal oxides, however, do not conduct as well as the base metal. This is why abrasive pads work well. The abrasive action destroys the oxide coating allowing metal contact to the engine wheels. The dielectric withstanding voltage of thin oxide layers is on the order of 10-50 volts depending on the oxide and the oxide thickness. The Electrak has sufficient voltage to ???punch through??? the oxide (called defritting), destroying the oxide and exposing the base metal. The ability of the Electrak to remove track oxides is particularly handy if you have an outside layout or one exposed to high humidity.

  12. I missed MOTD last night, even though I'm a follower of Chelsea, but I'm happy to take a bit of luck against the big boys from time to time. Not that I'm bitter about Man U winning the Champions League final or anything, but yesterday goes a small way to making up for it!

Whatever the rights and wrongs of the goal, I think Ferguson was very unwise to make such an obvious criticism of the ref when he's already got one disciplinary hearing hanging over him. If he now gets battered by the authorities, he'll have no-one to blame but himself, and if he doesn't, there'll be an outcry. Mind you, I felt it was very irresponsible of the Sky Sports reporter, who said: "Not wanting to put words in your mouth, Sir Alex, but did the ref cost you that one?" Not wanting to put words in his mouth? You just did, you idiot!

In summary, 0-0 would have been fair, given Chelsea's defensive work, but with Arsenal coming up, I'll take 1-0!

    A bit of luck??

Rooney was wrongly flagged offside when Ashley Cole was clearly playing him onside. Terry clearly dragged Valencia to the floor in the box= penalty without a doubt. 2 mistakes by the same linesman (obviously a Chelsea fan) who clearly saw both. And the freekick was never a freekick and even still, Drogba was offside/interfering with play. A bit of luck??

  13. Ooooh, I have something to write here today.

    26/10/99

    47845 1V35 (I had it Exeter STD - Plymouth)

47845 AND 47844 on the front worked the return 1M40 (Which I had Plymouth back to Exeter), notes indicate 845 suppling ETH but otherwise dragged.

    47818 1V45 (I had it Exeter STD - Plymouth)

47818 1M31 (I had it Plymouth to Taunton)

and an HST back to Exeter.

Only a decade ago and everything listed (Including the HST really) has gone :/

SNAP! How are you Matt? :D
