  1. Yesterday we managed to get the roof supports in place for the raised part of the building above roads 13 to 15. The cross pieces (trusses) for the main roof section which spans the four through roads (1 to 4) and the other dead-end roads (5 to 12) will hopefully be added next weekend. These pieces need notching out first before the connecting strands which run from the front to the rear can be added. This is adding strength to the whole building. A few photos of progress:
  2. Hi Dave, I look forward to seeing some 60s at Waverley West, especially 081! You could get a Mainline 077, remove the numbers, logos and name plate and add coal sector transfers and hey presto a coal 60 without the need to respray one! Would be nice if Hornby were to do 095 when it carried just unbranded triple grey, that would make it very easy to renumber and allow many triple grey examples to be modelled. They would sell bucket loads of them! It was June 1990, 60001 and 002 ventured up to Inverness on some Redland hoppers and a test coach. Might be something to have on your layout!
  3. Excellent photos as usual. When are we going to see a class 60 on test? A couple ventured up to Scotland on test late 80s/early 90s so you too could have them passing through Waverley West!
  4. Nice photo, think you need a few more HEAs though!
  5. Thanks for sharing your ballasting method, I have just been reading through it and the results are superb. As I will have to attempt some ballasting in a few months time it is nice to see how others do it. Excellent job!

    D I Why?

Looking good Pugs. You should have her finished in a couple of months! It is also very satisfying making your own transfers.
  7. Thanks Leon, those Pikestuff roof vents look superb. Just been doing some research for Boxenby and they will be perfect. Normally I use enamel thinners used gently with cotton buds, it might be worth trying that in an area where the new plate will go first. This worked fine for removing the nameplate on 60077 but the later models such as 60066 didn??™t work too well. Good luck, I look forward to seeing her. One day I would like to model 56073 Tremorfa Steel Works in this condition: http://stevejackson....t/p3099623.html Nice!
  8. Looking good. Where did you get the roof detailing parts from, they look superb?
  9. Thanks to everyone for the comments. Hi Dave, sorry! No problem, we are using 5.5mm plywood and 8mm square wooden battens. To join the pieces of wood together we are using Evo-Stik Resin W wood glue and then small nails/ tacking pins to hold it. Oh and a few clamps help! I have to say some pieces are very delicate and we were wondering how strong the structure would be but now it is surprisingly solid. Once the roof trusses/cross pieces are in place that will also help to add further strength. Ian, yes it is, perhaps I should have stuck with Grimley TMD! My original plan was to have the roof completely removable but that may be asking too much, now I think it will just be one of the smaller sections over the four through roads. This will also add strength to the structure if the main part of the roof is permanent. Although not as I had planned, once removed this will still allow you to see inside of the shed and view certain areas. I think I may have the roof over the raised section (roads 13 to 15) as this is where the lifting jacks will be. The plan for the roof is to use 3mm plasticard sitting on the pieces of wood with the skylights added afterwards. I will have a better idea later in the week once the roof pieces have been added. Thanks Crisis Rail, yes it is good looking back at those years! Last night we managed to do a small amount of work but important never the less. The side piece of the raised roof section was added which has really strengthened the structure. The cross pieces to support the roof will hopefully be added later in the week or at the weekend.
  10. Thanks very much for posting the photos, a truly superb depot. Really love the inside of the shed!
  11. Yesterday we spent a few hours assembling the depot frame which has now been glued and pinned. The cross section supports for the roof will be added later in the week. Once the basic shed has been put together I can then start marking out where the inspection pits will go. Not much to see just yet but it is starting to come together:
  12. Excellent layout. The weathering on the tunnel mouth is superb, absolute stunning modelling. Just been visiting your website and seen your excellent MPD, any chance you could post some more photos of it?
  13. Thanks Pete, yes there is a large area to cover both inside and outside of the depot shed! Might need a few of your inspection platforms! Thanks BigT, I am sure that I can sort something out to accommodate the running of a Grid on HAAs passed the depot! Might be a quite some time before it happens though??¦??¦ Good old BR days, it does take you back??¦??¦??¦ Can??™t disagree with you Cromptonnut. Guilty! Last night we addressed the minor problems and the shed is now ready for gluing together permanently, which hopefully will be done at the weekend. Very pleased with how it has turned out. 60040 came out of its box for the first time yesterday and was used to see how a loco will look inside the shed. It gives a good idea of how it will turn out.
  14. Thanks Peter, I did wonder if it was on a Railtour. I think it will be predominantly 56s on shed and for the later years 60s! Yesterday Grimley Senior and I spent a good few hours dry fitting the depot shed in preparation for gluing and pining. A few extra pieces of wood were cut and although we had a couple of minor problems which hopefully will be addressed tonight it seems to look how it is supposed to. It certainly does look like a mini Toton and gives a good idea of how the finished depot will look. Here are some photos of the depot clamped together: I am planning to make a couple of adjustments this evening, get the whole depot frame together and once happy get it glued at the weekend.
  15. Thanks for the kind comments Guy. I do like the Bachmann shed, they have done a nice job on it. Blimey Railwatch, I have not seen that for a while! Remember watching that all week back in 1988, we have it on video somewhere. That was always my favourite part the Grids around Knottingley, always a great place to visit for seeing 56 on MGRs. Thanks for the link, really enjoyed watching that last night. Red-stripe Railfreight 56s, love them, will have to have a few of those for my new project!
  16. Thanks for the photos Peter, very helpful and interesting. I like the one of the Peak up on the lifting jacks, I plan to have a Grid up off its bogies. When were the photos taken? 1984 ish? I see a pair of Thornaby 37/0s on shed, there must have been a working to Corby which included a stay at Toton, as when I visited 501 and 502 were there. Think I will need to get a few more pairs of Choppers though, don??™t think three 20s will be enough! Will definitely be modelling 45104, great shot of it at Cambridge. Was it there for a special occasion or had it worked a passenger service? To be honest I think it may well be a while before I can afford any new stock as the inspection pits alone require quite a bit of cash and then with the track and DCC hardware, funds for new locos will be almost non-existent! But we shall see??¦??¦. I have spent the past couple of days just finalising the depot plan which is almost there, just a couple of little issues which need sorting. My plan is to assemble the depot shed at the weekend which I am quite excited about. This will probably give me a wake up call when I see just how large the shed is! Not sure Mrs. Grimley is going to share my excitement!! Hi Simon, thanks for the offer. The Grimley pool does have a couple in it which will be made available! The first board which is for the depot shed is 1.2m x 1.5m with the second 1.2m x 1.75, the latter being for stabling and the point work. May need to add another board on the end, will have more of an idea once the shed has been built.
  17. Thanks Dave I have made a bit of progress! My wife thinks it is starting to become a bit obsessive??¦??¦??¦ I am fairly pleased with progress so far and once the main shed skeleton has been put together I can make a start on marking out where the inspection pits will go! Hopefully you will have something to see after the weekend! Yesterday Grimley Senior and I spent a couple of hours doing some woodwork for the depot building in preparation for construction of the main shed. The cross pieces have been cut with some being a little on the delicate side, so battens have been added to some of them to add a bit of strength. Here you can see some of the cross pieces drying on the kitchen floor after having the battens attached: Hopefully later in the week a start can be made on putting the first pieces together allowing a first real look at Boxenby TMD.
  18. Hi Peter, Thanks for the info. on the Peaks, to be honest it does sound like a minefield so will wait until I am ready to model some and then ask for some help! If that is ok with you? Love Griffon, superb. Thanks for posting the photos, would like to see that one visit Boxenby! Yes I pan to model mine as they were right at the end of their lives with orange cant rail stripes and high intensity head lights. Just how I remember them. The day we visited Toton, 45104 arrived in Derby when we were there on some MK2s, superb! I do have a Replica 45106 which is one of may favourite locos, will take a photo of it at Grimley next time I visit. After doing some research I agree it appears to be August 1988 that they were finally withdrawn. Keep looking at your 45103, really looking forward to modelling BR Blue stock.
  19. Dave, I believe it failed yesterday with coolant problems! Heard also that the LH beast 59 is having problems too!
  20. Hi Kevin, excellent photos of the metals grid on the slabs. Would you mind telling us how you made/weathered your slabs?
  21. Jamie, it certainly is a large shed. When I laid out the pieces on the board the other day it did surprise me a little! I am planning to construct the shed with the roof completely separate and detachable. This will allow you to see inside the shed once the roof has been removed. Arpleymodeller, I do plan to detail the inside of the shed not sure how it will turn out though! Yes you are right it will take quite a few locos to fill it, especially as it will be able to hold 34 locos inside. Not sure I have enough at the moment and certainly won??™t tell Mrs. Grimley that more locos are required, well not just yet! Thanks GM, I am up for the challenge and do plan to add full interior detailing. I also plan to have a 60 with roof panels and engine room doors open revealing the engine. And also once Bachmann release their lifting jacks plan to have a Grid off its bogies. I must be mad??¦??¦??¦.. Hi Baggie, yes I have been a bit busy with my latest obsession! I am quite pleased with progress so far, hopefully more can be done tonight subject to the adverse weather conditions! Aye, they will only be visiting and certainly not to be stored like at Toton. Be nice to have somewhere to see them all in one place. Really looking forward to going back to 1988??¦..your Original Railfreight Tractor will have to visit!
  22. You are quite right having fun is what our hobby is all about! I did although there is nothing wrong with the photo of 40173 at Eastfield! I remember back in 1991 I think it was, going round Eastfield depot, great TMD that was. Used to love going passed on the train or standing up on the bank looking at all the Large Logo 37s and 47s on shed. Great times??¦.. Eastfield would make a lovely layout, as previously mentioned there is a guy on the internet and may be a member on here that has been working on modelling said TMD. Very impressive. I look forward to seeing your model once your current project is finished! Love your idea of the exhibition featuring famous sheds, Tinsley, Old Oak, Thornaby, Eastfield, Immingham, Canton??¦??¦..how good would that be?
  23. Now that is a layout, great work. You must have a lot of fun playing trains!
