  2. A few pics of Colas Railfreight's Class 66's. There was a brief stint of them being used on Freightliner services a few years ago. I also seem to have 66848 following me...

  7. Wednesday saw Freightliner continue with the gradual take over of Mendip stone workings, with the stone to Chichester seeing haulage by the Green Team for the first time. A week previous saw a Hanson liveried Class 59 on this train, maybe we'll see Orange 59's in due course?

  8. As someone who was a passenger on this very service, I'm very much looking forward to seeing what the RAIB find. The seriousness of what was happening didn't fully hit until we'd cleared the platforms at Waverley and the Train Manager was running through the corridor to his cabin to bring the train to a halt. There was then a rather animated 'discussion' between him and the driver after we'd stopped within Calton Tunnel.

It was my first journey on CS, and what a journey it was! The coaches seem quite smart when you step on, but the seats are really uncomfortable and don't recline enough. The ride quality was hit and miss, with several instances throughout the night where you could hear and feel the bogies not coping very well with whatever trackwork it was running over. There was one point where I thought we'd come off the track it was that bad! The older stock we got from Fort William a few days later was pretty ratty inside but was far more comfortable, except for the lack of A/C making it a sweatbox.

There was a delay leaving Carstairs, which seemingly was due to issues trying to get the ETH cable in. The hostest from the lounge car came through and was talking to the TM or Shunter about there being no power in the kitchen to prepare breakfast. The staff (3 of them) all seemed stressed out, even before leaving London and were a touch rude at times.

To me, CS seemed to play down the severity of the incident. I think they were lucky the incident didn't wind up being a test of how crashworthy the MK5's are.

Cheers SWT442, quite some photos there.  Just now I'm split between my layout going recent SWT + maybe XC and/or GW or late in the NSE period, though it seems there is some overlap.  Certainly it will be a mix of DMUs & EMUs.

I've also got a small depot/fuelling point, hence the question about freight companies.

    A pleasure.

I model pretty much both those periods (1998-2002 & 2015 onwards), and find Flickr a great resource for finding photos of workings in those eras, and more so locomotives that were around. YouTube is also a good place to find footage of certain workings or locations and what ran through them.

The time around the turn of the 21st is quite an interesting period to model IMO, with the start of the 'GM Invasion' with Class 66 & 67 coming on tap but also many older locos running around and what liveries managed to evade the paintshop! It seemed anything went at that time, who would've thought you'd see a Railfreight Red Stripe Class 56 on a Virgin CrossCountry working?!

  10. Off the top of my head there's a few things I can think of.

Certain units clung onto NSE for quite a while. Most of the Class 365's on the ECML managed to retain the livery until at least 2007, when First Capital Connect took over. Not bad going when you consider that WAGN (West Anglia Great Northern) were the privatised company that took over from the BR/NSE operation in 1997!

    365525, Kings Cross, February 4th 2006 365538 Royston 280407 365 537

This video on YouTube shows a pair of Slamdoor EMU's leaving Woking in 2005, at the 6 minute 20 second mark the rear unit is still in NSE but with SWT branding. Can't quite catch the unit number though.

Then there was 47711, which went into EWS ownership still wearing NSE colours and named "County of Hertfordshire". It kept the livery and name until 1998, when it was repainted into Virgin Trains livery but still retaining the original name. Not sure whether the ownership was transfered, or it was a long term hire-in by Virgin.

    19980114 Scan1451 47711 6L79 Marston 47711 Avon Bins

It's something that interests me, seeing how long certain liveries managed to last!

  11. A search on Flickr yielded a few good results, showing that it strayed far from its Anglia stomping ground. Couple of pictures of it working Freightliner services, including one up the WCML in 2005. Seemed to be used a lot on stock moves of MK3's going to and coming back from painting into ONE colours prior to Class 90 worked services on the GEML. It got around on Railtours too, there's a shot of it at Edinburgh Waverly on one. Looks like it became part of the Cotswold Rail fleet from about 2005 until it went to Old Dalby, as there's pictures of it paired with their liveried Class 47's, as well as doing what looks to ad-hoc and spot hire work.

  12. Don't know how I missed this at DEMU! Definatley of interest to me, credit card will get a bashing I think!

As some additional info if a full rake isn't feasable, they could be found on the Enterprise workings out of Southampton to Scotland. They were workings that were of interest to me before they ceased, as they could vary in length and type of wagon. This info is applicable for the mid-2010's.

The wagons, amongst others such as double deck types, would be used for moving imported Renault vans and cars from Southampton Western Docks. The working ran as 6X44 to Eastleigh Yard, and normally had intermodal flats as well. For a short time, HEA's loaded with dredged pea shingle were in the mix too. The trip workings from Fawley Refinery and Marchwood MOD (if either ran) would be added on, and the whole lot went forward as 6X38 to Didcot. From Didcot, it went forward as 6X65 to Mossend via Warrington and Carlisle. I think Warrington is where an electric loco would be attached. The workings seemed to run as an 'X' if the car wagons were loaded, though didn't always happen. Otherwise the workings were 6B44, 6V38 and 6M65.

Normally a DB Class 66 was used, however it wasn't unknown to find a Class 60 on the trip workings. This was during the time when DB had based one at Eastleigh to be used as a 'Super Shunter'. Class 67's may have been used as well, can't say I saw any though.

Wagons would return on 6V15 from Mossend to Didcot, and then onwards to Eastleigh as 6O15. The trip to the docks ran as 6B43. A search of Flickr using the headcodes yeilds some results. As an aside, I believe 6X44 was also the headcode used for the car train from Dagenham to Didcot, which also joined onto 6X65.

Also, I can't say I've seen 6M66 run with covered IPA's. They were normally the open or stathed type as the working would convey imported Ford Transits, as well as other Ford cars.

    Here's a few pictures!

  14. Desiros internally look quite smart with the new interior, a shame to lose the 2+1 seating in 1st Class though. Externally, they look somewhat unloved... By all accounts, repaints should start this year, whether Bournemouth Depot gets it remains to be seen...

Anyway, I found these in some unmarked folders. Shots of the 1497 "Freshwater" working on the Lymington Branch prior to the withdrawal of MK1 units on the line. A real shame to have lost them. I never did any pictures of 1498 "Farringford" on the line unfortunatley.

These are the only two pictures I have of 1498 "Farringford". To even out the flange wear on the wheelsets, the pair of units ran as 5Z98 Bournemouth T&RSMD to Fareham via Netley and then back as 5Z99 to Bournemouth T&RSMD via a reversal at Eastleigh. Both workings are seen at Beaulieu Road on 31.03.2010.

And a pair of pictures of more modern units.

  15. Here's a couple of pictures of the JHA's today at DEMU. Look good, but was advised that there's some minor livery revisions to be done.

These and the 59's are due later in the year, and was advised that the 59 *should* arrive a month or so after the wagons. Another run of JHA's with other numbers likely due this time next year.

Did ask if an ARC specific wagon would be next, but seemed unlikely. However, there's quite the chance that the PTA could be next. Doable as an ARC & Yeoman liveried wagon as well as Iron Ore hoppers. Good choice I think!

Also hinted that 59003 in GBRf livery could well feature in the next batch of 59's, with the loco specific modifications tooled up. And a 73/9 isn't out the picture, but maybe a few years away.

  16. 40 minutes ago, Gwiwer said:

SWR has just two electric units in the new livery namely 444040 and 450111.  The 442s are yet to re-enter service though should start to do so from next weekend's timetable change.

This is not confirmed, but it's hoped that the 444's/450's will go to Bournemouth for repainting once the 442's are all in service. There's not enough pit space at the moment to have 442's being worked on and Desiros split apart for painting.

Anyway, here's some more mundane units!
