  1. Tranent – The Tranent Tramway is thought to be the first railway used strategically in battle – General Cope mounted his artillery on it in preparation for the Battle of Prestonpans, 1745.
  2. Come on then Pete - catch the pass!
  3. Hm, swapping cards, are we? Edit: corrected word.
  4. I am offended. Cheating? In a game with no rules? I was playing my version, the aim being to use the full alphabet. This demands careful forethought and ruthless speed to forestall any attempt to use my carefully chosen last letter before I can complete my play. This combines the skills of Scrabble and Snap! (Wanders off muttering in high dudgeon...)
  5. Vladivostok – twinned with Cleethorpes (I made up that last bit to make it seem interesting …)
  6. Rostov – one of the oldest towns in Russia.
  7. In the British Isles, yes, Mickey, but there's a Saint-Louis-du-Ha! Ha! and a Baie-des-Ha! Ha! in Quebec.
  8. St Albans – its abbey tower built with Roman bricks as old then as the abbey is now.
  9. Nice picture, Michael. The kind of scene LS Lowry might have painted.
  10. Loxley – in South Yorkshire - whence came Robin Hood.
  11. Wales – the village in South Yorkshire, that is. In order to avoid confusion, the country of that name is referred to as “Welsh Wales”.
  12. Rotherham – birthplace of the Chuckle Brothers (“To me …” )
  13. Granton – southern terminal of the world's first ro-ro train ferry.
  14. Thurso – as far north as your all-lines railcard will take you.
  15. Melrose – where Robert the Bruce's heart is buried.
  16. Hampton Wick – made famous by cockney rhyming slang.
  17. Edinburgh - famous for, um, where do I start?
  18. Third mention so far; I suppose that proves the point.
  19. Drymen – pronounced Drimmin.
  20. Accrington – home of Accrington Stanley (Milk Marketing Board? Who're they?)
  21. Two each of Dundee, York and Kirkcaldy. Well, the rules(?) are pretty loose. Personally, I might go for the complete alphabet, one placename per letter, if it goes on long enough. Good God, what am I saying? I really must get out more ...
  22. Yard – or 91.44 cm, in new money.
  23. Natters – talkative place south of Innsbruck.
  24. Keighley – former home of the famous Litesome jockstrap.
  25. Maxwellton – its braes are bonny, so I've heard.
