  1. As promised, here are another couple I've dug out of the pile, both dating from the spring of 1991.

    post-7291-0-60452900-1387279809_thumb.jpg

    First, 47 583 County of Hertfordshire passing Royal Oak;

and second is 47 452 Aycliffe at Ely. This shows one of the many variations that can occur, even with supposedly standard liveries, in that the 7 and 5 are sligtly larger than the rest.

  2. Here's a couple of quick edits from me. Both images date from the late 1980s. First is 47 572 running round at Cambridge on 6th May 1987. I sent a copy of the image to Mike Wild when Hornby magazine announced their limited edition model of this loco, but I don't believe it has ever been used.

Next is 47 622 departing from Salisbury in 1988. I have no notes to hand about the working.

I'll try to dig out more when I can find a few minutes of editing time.

  3. Morning all

Well, after nine pretty intense months of sorting, de-cluttering and packing, I finally moved out of my home of 34 years yesterday and headed south. I pick up the keys to my new abode later this morning and can't wait to move in. All I have to do now is unpack and find a home for everything...

Quality of life goals have driven my relocation plans and at long last I will have the space to do some serious modelling. After the new gaff is sorted, of course.

  4. Morning all.

Reminded again how technology creates waste.  Had no takers on a perfectly good set of Model Rail Videos, probably 20 of them, made completely redundant and off to land fill as VHS video is now obsolete.

I'm all for the new products that technology creates, but saddened to see such a waste of good material.

I looked into recycling old VHS cassettes recently and found very few organisations prepared to do it, and those that did required a significant commitment on my part. I'm reluctant to add to landfill, but with so few recycling choices there may be no alternative. We have legislation in place now for waste electrical equipment, so perhaps it's about time that a wider range of manufacturers took a "whole life" approach to their products.

  5. My copy arrived shortly before Christmas and I can't resist dipping into it at regular intervals. Colin Gifford's work has been an inspiration to me and, I know, many others, so I'm therefore delighted the decision was taken to reproduce this to current standards. A truly seminal work.

  6. Are you sure that's Alton ground frame? It looks like someone's back garden... ;)

Here's another people picture from my collection. This one dates from the second half of 1979 and shows Sunday track renewals taking place at Hertford North. The traditional look-out was clearly enjoying a brief moment of contemplation. His sports jacket was de rigueur at the time and provides an interesting contrast to the wall-to-wall orange boiler suits seen nowadays.

  7. I'm delighted to report that my blue 31 arrived unexpectedly this morning. I should say a blue 31 arrived, because it is effectively a replacement model. It has taken almost one year for this to be resolved, but since I was not in any hurry I am more than satisfied with the outcome. Ordinarily, replacing a defective product should not take this long, but I understand the nature of batch production in China and am therefore content. I will be thanking Hornby directly in due course.

  8. Copyright is actually a relatively straightforward issue, but the internet has blurred moral and ethical boundaries. A former senior civil servant - someone educated to degree level - blithely informed me a few years back that anything published on the internet was "public domain" and could therefore be used how they wished. It is the sharing of digital images which seems to have sparked similar views among others.

I know that my placing copyright information on images I post on RMweb irritates some members, but it leaves no excuses for unauthorised use. The rule I work to is that copyright should be assumed to exist in all images, even where there is no copyright information.

  9. There were no metal benches in my day; I spent a day sat on a brute just by this in ... er 1983 (?) during the holidays doing my art holiday homework... "entrances" was the subject I think, and I drew the view looking towards the platform entrances... railing and view through to the buffer stops. Wish I had a copy of that! Good ole 405s were the order of the day. memories.... lovely!

Not really creative, but this view of Hertford East from December 1978 might prompt some nostalgic thoughts.

  10. Oh well. Another Aunt Sally for the Tottenham board to set up and then progressively undermine. And this Director of Football stuff. Is it just me, or do others think that this is one of those inventions that causes more problems than it solves?

  11. Am I right in thinking that the 4TC is in effect an unpowered VEP and this is therefore an opportunity to buy for people who do not want to do third rail?

A 4TC is far closer in nature to an unpowered 4CIG.

  12. Thanks for sharing these Mike. Being pilotman on that shuttle must have been a glorious way to spend some time. Definitely a good day at work!

Your pictures also remind us just what has been lost. Travelling to and from Taunton in April gave me an opportunity to view the site as I sped past on HSTs and I was horrified to see how large parts of it appeared to be derelict. Okay, Crossrail and HS2 may change this, but for those of us who remember it as a major London depot it still feels like a significant chunk of railway history has been lost.

  13. I had a quick look at the football pages on the BBC website this morning to see what had been said about Harry Redknapp's departure from Spurs. Interestingly, there was more than one contributor who expressed the view the Spurs could get a better manager. This I must see!

  14. I cannot believe the stupidity of Levy...

...The chairman has a way of hitting the self destruct button every time the club looks like making that step up.

Which is what I was hinting at some way back in this thread. The sacking of Martin Jol proved where the problem lay and today's events beggar belief. Perhaps Mr Levy is a secret Arsenal fan...

  15. Who has found a renumbering technique that works well for them?

I tried turps substitute, but it had little effect so I went for the T-Cut and cocktail stick method which worked well and allows finer control over the area affected than a cotton bud.

My own particular concern was over the spacing of the Fox numerals. All of the sheets I have in my possession, including almost complete sets for classes 25, 37, 47 etc, have noticeably wider spacing than most photographs of the TOPS era suggest. The quick and dirty edit below below shows my first attempt which may be re-done as I am not totally happy with it.

    post-7291-0-11925700-1337937878.jpg

If you look at my shot of the real 22 earlier in this thread you'll see that the numerals look larger than the Fox examples other than the final two. My practice session with the Fox numerals also included having a go at a class 25. Applying each numeral individually was more fiddly, but worked far better in terms of spacing and appearance. I hope this helps.

  16. Interesting memories of learning crafts at school. I did woodwork for two years (I still use the pencil box I made all those years ago), then metalwork for the next three. We had two metalwork teachers. The guy on our first year had little patience - I think he was near the end of his career - but he did teach me how to cut threads using taps, dies and plenty of tallow. The second, younger teacher was better and could be a real laugh, although any messing about on our part brought swift retribution, and rightly so.

I think I learned more from my father, who was a saw doctor by trade (a term that might be lost on younger readers) and a very proficient woodworker. He not only manufactured and serviced the cutting, routing and drilling tools that woodworkers (and others) needed, but was able to use them proficently in his own right.

  17. Time to dig out the 1978 - 82 photos methinks...

I'm going to be basing my 85 on the image below, taken in August 1981. I noted that the Model Rail review suggested an etch is to be produced of the horn grille covers, one of which is clearly visible in this shot. Jim S-W's chopped up cotton bud stem looks pretty convincing though!
