  1. My thread about class 31s with MK 2 D/E/F coaches has led me down a rabbit hole of pictures of short trains with MK2 D/E/F  coaches on Flickr and I thought I'd just start a thread as they might be inspirational for others. Feel free to add your own or other's pictures but a few ground rules.

Don't talk about Air Con Club

They must be five coaches or less

The majority of the train should be MK 2 D/E/F coaches

It must be a service train I.E. not an ECS

Just received my EFE car carriers and, my goodness, the grey on them is really dark. Compare with my photo of one with a Bachmann Motorail GUV. It's truly awful. Doubt they'll take them back though!

It almost looks as if both the blue and the grey shades are off which makes the problem even more glaring.

In 1980/1 I commuted from Derby to Birmingham for a while.  My morning train was a Sheffield-Cardiff service which was 0650-ish something or other from Derby.  It was formed of air cons and booked for a 47/4 however at least twice a week, and sometimes more frequently, it would turn up with an ER 31/4 on it.  If it had been non-stop to New St it would probably have been ok but iirc it called at Burton, Tamworth, Wilnecote and Water Orton so the lack of grunt was very apparent when restarting from those stops.  Needless to say it lost time hand over fist.

As an aside, often unsuitable power turning up at New St would come off and Saltley would find something better.  However I don't ever recall the 31 on my morning train coming off at New St and it worked through onto the WR.

You know I think that those might be the trains that I originally saw pictures of as the name Water Orton does seem very familiar for some reason.

Timekeeping with them on those Birmingham - Paddington runs was dire. Travelling on a cold day to a job at Banbury we struggled to make it up the bank from Leamington towards Fenny Compton.

One driver told us you could have either traction power or train supply but not both together if you wanted to keep time going uphill.

"Ladies and gentleman you have a choice on this train. You can either be cold and moving or stationary and warm. What will it be?"

  5. Adam has just updated the Dapol Digest and it seems that we are all going to having to wait at least another 4-8 months. That's a shame as I wanted to buy some Executive MK3s to help me make up a Manchester Pullman rake and the original ETA was Q2 2024.

"The standalone Mk3 DVTs and the Chiltern / DB trainpacks should be with in July. The loco-hauled Mk3s should arrive between October and January in different batches."

The big question is - what would sell in sufficient quantities to make a return on investment?  If you look at the Accurascale 00 range there is almost nothing that hasn't already been covered in N. Like others I am happy enough with my 50s, 37 and 31 to not buy new ones. I am also happy enough with my Farish suburban stock to not want to replace them. There are no wagons in the Accurascale 00 range that are "wants" for me. I think if there was anything that was an obvious good seller in N from their current range 00 they would already have announced it.

The unfilled gaps of potentially good sellers in N are probably a King or a rebuilt West Country. Maybe there is room for a 2251 class? A relatively simple loco with a wide field of operation. Its been a long time since the Peco one and the New Mills one wasn't detailed enough for many of us. On the diesel front maybe, just maybe a D600 would sell but I'm not sure. DMU coverage in N is quite poor so maybe there is room for something like a 120. I don't think I am likely to buy any more coaches as I have all the rakes I need. Likewise wagons but I could possibly be tempted by a decent Syphon.

For a business its all about getting a return on that precious cash invested in new projects. If you can't see a good return then you can't invest.

"If you look at the Accurascale 00 range there is almost nothing that hasn't already been covered in N"

That's true if you are only thinking about locomotives, but we don't have N gauge MK2B/C coaches, Siphons or HUO/HTV wagons. Personally I think that if AS do produce something for N gauge then they should start with rolling stock which is lacking in many areas in this scale.

Thank, so It seems that it was a semi regular occurrence. I've been trying to find pictures of the train on Flickr and it has highlighted how very modellable the train was with the short rakes.

These workings required an eth fitted engine following the introduction of air conditioned coaching stock in 1972. These duties ceased with the introduction in 1978 of HST’s..."

Not sure if this counts according to your requirements?

Thanks, I was thinking more about the 80s, but I did find this Flickr pic that showed what you are referring to and as I'm trying to find any excuse to run my Class 31 with blue/grey MK2F coaches, so I'll take it! Plus the train is nice and short which is a bonus for my cramped layout.

  9. Does anyone know if there were any regular trains in the 80s blue/grey period consisting of MK2D/E/Fs that were hauled by a Class 31/4? I seem to remember seeing pictures of them in the 80s from around the Midlands area and I know that they were used on Summer Saturday trains, but I'm thinking about more regular services. To be honest I think I may be confusing their usage on ECS trains as I seem to remember Oxley (where there are carriage sidings) being mentioned.

I've found this picture on Flickr of one on a Leeds to Brighton service, but I guess it may just be another Summer special service.

Indeed it is! In the InterCity era Pullman rakes appeared in the West Country on Summer Saturday cross country services so these coaches wouldn’t just appeal to WCML modellers.

Isn't that what this train is as the formation seems very Pullman-esque?

    Summer Saturday extra.
