  1. Scott Arms yard (still waiting for Bachmann/Scenecraft large aggregate bags) entrance to the PW yard, piles of sleepers all Peco with the holes filled then painted, Peco skip filled with whatever I could find and of course 'cones' Note: the line in the foreground is the loco depot headshunt
  2. Currently have the Knightwing fuel tanks on this layout, would anyone recommend the Bachmann Scenecraft ones as replacement as the hanrails on the Knightwing model have already got damaged. Also has anyone swopped the double portacabin from Knightwing to Scenecraft and are they more robust?
  3. More pics added, lights added to the shed these are wired via a micro plug as can be seen in the picture of the shed
  4. Here are more pics from 'Scott Arms' I have added an express lighting kit to the fuel point which had to be retro fitted as I have already built the fuel point, the kit contains two strips of 3 x LED lighting, wire and brass 'tape' the idea this being stuck to the poles but I chose to glue the wires down the poles and as I take the fuel depot off when not in use a tiny mini plug is used to disconect the wires, now I have done this I will add lights to the Pikestuff shed this will complete this section of the layout.
  5. Second page from old RM Web, think I'm getting the hang of this now, then I'll add some new stuff Whilst most have done quite a bit to there projects over the holiday period, I have done very little Here's a 'Nevard' picture knocked up on photoshop, the embankment obviously isn't right but it shows the new Hornby 153 nicely The shed painted The layout was officially handed over to my Son for Christmas so I'm unsure how much progess will be made, one thing it works fine under DCC operation although I still haven't done the fiddle yard beyond the bridgeProper signals go down, not up! Re: Scott Arms - modern DCC layout by Darren01 » Wed Jan 14, 2009 12:58 am Hi Try using humbrol no29 RAF brown on the soide of the rail ,as the railmatch rust is too red. If you want to paint the points and don't want the paint to get on to the blade of the point ,open the point up and put bluetack in . This way you can paint the point and not stop the contact. Darren London Midland Guard wrote:Excellent work mate. How do you find the new 153? I fancy a EMT and CT one..... Also the wooden station fencing where did you get it from? I need some for my stations to. LMG. The Hornby 153 is excellent, why this model has taken so long in ready to run form is amazing, it should have been released years ago being a single with so many liveries, its ideal for any modern layout. The Central Trains one on 'Scott Arms' was purchased DCC fitted and tempted to get a sound chip too. The wooden fencing is from Ratio, I think the posts are moulded as wooden but I have painted mine concrete, this type of fencing seems quite common from Lostwithiel to Kidderminster to Attenbourgh stations to name few. added to the station, Viessmann station lamp and home made station name board, the posts should be green, any sugestions on Central green? In need of people now to bring things to life!Proper signals go down, not up! I trying to get my Dad to purchase a Peco Modern engine shed to bring out to me, it will be something different. BTW I am in the USA. After the rush to get the layout finish for Christmas (which of course I didn't) things have moved rather more slowly, the legs have now been built although this is the sort of thing that should have been done at the start to ensure all the sections line up, its one thing on the kitchen table but the whole thing needed legs to be a self contained layout, I looked at tressels but opted for legs, in essence the layout is a glorified 'paste table' the legs have been hand built by a carpenter recycling some old wood and are bolted onto the main frame, the layout is not as sturdy as tressels but the whole thing can be taken to bits to fit under a standard single bed for storage. I now have to check the joints to ensure smooth running, hence why the baseboard building stage is so important as many (myself included) are in a rush to get the track laid. Here is a pic of the layout all together for the first time including the tiny fiddle yard. Here is a picture of one of the legs, 4 in total hold the layout up! I intend to do a lot more to the layout although I'm playing with my new toy a Nikon Coolscan restoring my slides of the 80's to digitalProper signals go down, not up! Like all modern depots one 66 is not enough, I am waiting for the Fastline 66 to arrive and with Bachmann 66 068 currently at a reduced price at my local model shop (Kernow) looks like these will be joining the fleet soon along with 37670 in EWS livery. I have stated to detail the fuel point, although I built the Knightwing kit last year it still needed a bit more detail, (I will add lights at a later date) I used Knightwing B24 pack and as I was short of hose, I used (borrowed from my wife) some 1.5mm leather 'bracelet' that was brought on ebay, and added two bits of of-cuts from a 'sprue' for filler nozzels! here are the results of the details fuel point Added extra's 'Knightwing' oil drums and dustbin, 'Replica Railways' tail lamps and fuel hoses plus the ever popular 'Prieser' figure from set 10420Proper signals go down, not up! I was thinking along the same lines, (excuse the pun) maybe a spoil tip with a Norscot digger, sleeper piles and the new porta-cabin from Bachmann, I am so tempted to add a manual signal box at the end of the station (Bachmann 44-061) The other idea was to add a cement terminal but still undecided Proper signals go down, not up! 6. Copied from old RM Web to update the progress or lack of, I could not get the html code to copy accross so its a copy and past job, as I hate this new RM Web! Scott Arms - modern DCC layout almost there! Ok, this is my first attempt at DCC, twelve months ago, my opinion was very different with regard to DCC, but my son now wants his own layout, being younger, the lights and sounds on loco's in the digital age make railway modelling more appealing, I am yet to be won over by DCC. My layout has been idle for some years in the garage due to various reasons; mainly working on the real thing has prevented me doing any work on the layout as after a bad day on the trains the last thing you feel like doing is modelling trains. As my layout is DC there is now a need for a DCC layout for my sons modern DCC stock. My son should be building this himself but his modelling skills are not upto much, so I am building "Scott Arms" an EWS depot and Network West Midlands local station set somewhere in the Midlands. Inspiration must go to 'Big Jim' and his Warmington DCC layout, after seeing this, and borrowing his sound chipped class 60 and Fastline 56, my son has asked for me to build a similar layout to this, that will fit under his bed! I am going to try and build this layout in around 3 months ready for Christmas, as DCC sound fitted diesels are on Santa's list. The last layout I built in '00' was 'Roy Bridge' this was a minimun space layout that was on display for a short time in 'Roys Hobbies and Toys' in Rubery, before my father sold the business, this layout was built to exhibition standard and exhibited at a few local shows, I will try and post a few pictures to show what can be achieved for the steam era in 6ft. The base boards have been made for me using PSE 2 x 1 framing and MDF top, I normally use Sundela, but I have experienced warping between braces. I have found that I have still been able to use Peco pins into MDF to secure the track. Basic plan includes loco shed, fuel point, small sidings and small station all in 6ft! I have now started to lay the track and will post pictures as I progress The track now laid on the fuel point using a mixture of wooden sleeper and concrete, the picture showing a Lima 37 and 67, and the base of the fuel point, for what must be knightwings top selling item. Clearly seen is the 'throat' on to the depot, which will form the classic 'zig zag' via the headshunt or "Neck" as it is known on the Midland region to gain access to the depot. What can't be seen as clear in the picture is the copper clad sleepers for the base board joint. I was going to use cork as an underlay which would give a modern 'shoulder' for the ballast but decided not to in the end. Any feedback would be welcome!Last edited by 21Alizard on Fri Oct 30, 2009 8:15 pm, edited 3 times in total. Proper signals go down, not up! Looking forward to seeing progress on this layout having heard the plans first hand, im going to contribute some knightwing pallasade fencing from warmington when i replace it with s-kits etched stuff too! A few more pics as progress takes place, I've built a Pikestuff shed although this has to be painted and added peco inspection pits, (to be prototypical this would need two kits for one locomotive) a floor has to be made for the shed from plasticard. This board just requires wiring as this is first time DCC I understand that all tracks are live all the time and wiring should be carried out with larger cable? (any posts how to wire sidings on DCC) Still to do is the boring job of painting the rail edges rusty! Then to finish track work on the second board and fiddle yard which I am wondering to build as a sector plate, any posts on here?Proper signals go down, not up! Is it based on Scott Arms in Great Barr? Yes, the name is taken from "Scott Arms" near Great Barr although I can't think why a depot and station would be there with Hampstead and Bescot so close, perhaps "Kingstanding the next station stop" My son's name is Scott as I was going to call the layout Scotts Road, but the the time the layout is finished, it may be called something else, although unfortunatly in reality these types of small depots would not exist!Proper signals go down, not up! First DCC layout "Scott Arms" viewtopic.php?f=9&t=30530 My fotopic page http://21alizard.fotopic.net/ November Update:- I tend to work on each board separately as its easier to work on, the picture shows the headshunt end showing "rusted rails" and a start on the ballasting, the proven method is to spread the stone chippings around the track then apply a dilute PVA. Unfortunately I don't find this method secure enough for portable layouts, so forget everything about ballasting and this is how I ballast layouts. I use "Cascamite" powdered resin wood glue or similar the ballast and powder is mixed dry in a tub around 75% ballast 25% powdered glue, this is then brushed around the track as desired then simply sprayed with water and a hint of washing up liquid (to break the water tension) this dries to a hard solid 'resin' finish - no more loose chippings! On the shed end board I have now started adding plastic card around the shed for the concrete area, the fuel point has been painted too. Like many other similar types of layouts I am using a 'Pikestuff' engine shed and I am sorry to say this kit is American rubbish, after building a Walthers kit which was excellent this kit was a great disapointment the instructions even admit to miss-alignment in mouldings, plus it doesn't look quite right, so decided to add a brick base, its still not finished but I think with a bit of 'hacking' about the shed will look British. The basic shape is now starting to take place! Also wiring has been completed for DCC (will add picture and discription) basicly wire to toe of point then isolate after point and feed from other end, I used the Peco wiring the layout 3 for guidance Note: - The '37' is LimaProper signals go down, not up! You could argue that the old Colliery was kept open and the traffic was enough to keep the depot in use for private loco's and then came under the wing of EWS. Plus it is a prime location for a passenger station. Scenery has started to the bare boards, the bridge to the hidden fiddle yard has been built out of off-cuts of wood and plasticard and the small amount of of scenics using bits of wood and mod-roc / polyfiller are being added, then painted with masonary paint to give hard finish. The whole area is painted brown to represent earth then clumps of bleached 'old fashioned' carpet underlay are glued with PVA, once dry these are teased and painted with water colour as described in Barry Normans excellent book. although I'm not happy with the green on this occasion!
