    I didn't record the number, but probably either 062 or 063 with empty wagons at Latchford  Loaded trains used the 'football field' or MSC sidings to run round as they are pretty much level, with empties using 'the old line' or 'the bank'. This was the stub of the former CLC line to Skelton Jnc and beyond.

    Another night time shot. This time its 60 020 again, at Walton MSC with the chemical plant providing the background.

    Now its 063's turn to pose at night. Waiting to come off Arpley for Liverpool bulk terminal, which means it's probably the first service of the week, early hours of Monday morning. (The LBT-Fiddlers trains didn't run on a Sunday).

    And finally its 017's turn for the limelight (or should it be moonlight?). We've just arrived at the LBT and stopped at Strand Road cabin. If the loading bunker wasn't fully charged or there was another train under the bunker, we'd wait here and share a brew with the PIC (person in charge), the flies and the resident mice...

  4. Why pray tell do you refer to them as "God awful things"?

    Because I've had  the unfortunate pleasure of driving them. Whether it's the driving seat with the unadjustable back rest, the windows that are a finger trap hazard, the fact that all the controls work in the opposite direction to everything else on the network or the fact that they throw their teddies out with frightening regularity, I just don't like them. That's why!

    Somewhere near Lichfield Trent Valley ( I forget where exactly), waiting at a red due to a track circuit failure ahead. Although not a complete view, it does give some idea of the cab layout of these god awful things.

    The two bridges crossing the Mersey are bottom left. The steam shed was on the patch of ground immediately below the diesel depot and stretching back to where the high level bridge crosses the Cheadle - Tiviot Dale line. The factory that is currently being demolished is top right. The M60 runs straight through where Heaton Mersey sidings were (between the running lines and the diesel depot).

  7. The line was closed about 1982. Peanuts of this parish might have better details. I passed the site a week last Friday, and it looked as if the remains of the steam shed were being levelled

    That isn't the steam shed that is being demolished. The steam shed was underneath the industrial estate on the right as you head towards Stockport from Cheadle on the M60. The building being flattened is the old biscuit factory.

  9. JamesB: the joys of running round in the wappings, at least there are lights i there though

     

    I remember sitting in LBT one night back in 2009 with an ironbridge coal service and the class 60 on the train in front got stuck on the bank as the ice was an inch thick on the railhead, i knew i'd definatly be in trouble with my 66 if a 60 got stuck!

     

    Got to agree a lovely loco to drive, didnt think much of them when i first signed them but they have really grown in me now, the turning point was the first time i worked one with 3000 ton behind and it didnt break a sweat, very impressive, the only loco that comes close haulage wise is a class 70

     

    They are most impressive machines, as you well know. If only they'd put the seats from a 66 into a 60....

    Indeed! I did not take a step further. What appears to be a bulkhead light mounted near the floor is actually the reflection of the light above in the spilled oil. What you can't see from the pictures is that while the mess on the bodyside looks spectacular, the real damage was being done underneath. Of the 204 gallons of engine oil initially present, what didn't escape out of the roof and sides drained out through the holes in the bed plate. It took an hour for assistance to arrive from Arpley and for all of that hour, 'Clitheroe Castle' sounded like a sink with the tap left running. The Network Rail MOM sent out to wind the points over (I had failed and managed to block the pre-set route as well), nearly had a heart attack when I told him it was gallons and not litres....

    60 024 'Clitheroe Castle' at Earlestown after failing in spectacular fashion. A 50p  banjo bolt somehow worked loose and the attached oil feed suddenly became 'unattached' and dumped all the lube oil. As you can see, it was under high pressure and found its way out via any means possible..

    Bringing 60 063 off shed. If I recall correctly, this 'thing' was the source of many a swear word from drivers. This was due to it running with the auto sanders isolated (awaiting a new part), which meant it slipped like a ######. It slipped to a stand on Spellow bank and I had to use the slow speed control setting to drag me up to Walton lane. What should have taken about 6 minutes took more like 20...

    I surprised myself with how well this came out. While waiting for the loading bunker at Fidlers Ferry to clear, I snapped this. Considering it was taken on my smart phone, it aint half bad..
