  1. A quick search on Flickr suggests that 56013 was scrapped around 1995/96 whilst still in Trainload Triple Grey (Coal). At least I couldn't find any pictures later than 1995 of it. This suggests that it never gained the later style grilles.

For me, this highlights the difficulty in producing a model of the 56: there are SO many detail differences that it makes it really difficult (without a lot of different toolings) to produce 100% accurate models with a wide range of liveries from a range of eras. For the record, Hornby haven't managed this very well either: e.g. 56032 also missed off the full buffer beam cowling.

Regarding Cav's comments about the shape of the cab, I would have to agree. I can't put my finger on what it is. The principle dimensions of the cab look right (I did some crude calculations in against a prototype photograph), so maybe it is an effect of the glazing being quite deeply recessed in a 2mm model? Perhaps Laserglaze would sort this out? The front windows should have a very slight droop to them (not as pronounced as the 50) and I can't tell from Andy's photos whether Dapol have reproduced this or not.

Anyway, hats off to Dapol for having a go at the 56. Looks a million times better than the Farish model even if there are a few details to sort out to match your chosen loco (it's called modelling isn't it?).

  2. When I did a BR Blue 47 a couple of years ago, I spent ages scaling photographs to work out whether the transfers for the numbers I had in my possession were to scale or not.

    The conclusions I came to:

    • All transfers are not the same height or "boldness" - there is considerable variability in height between Fox, Modelmaster, Replica and Nairnshire's ones (to name but a few). Off the top of my head this was between about 1.9mm and 2.3mm in height.
    • Scaling numbers off various prototype pictures suggests that there was variability on the prototype too so the prototype might dictate your choice of transfer.
    • There is massive variability in the size and "boldness" of what manufacturers print. This is seldom picked up on in reviews of models. Probably best to ignore what Bachmann have done and go back to prototype pics to work out how big they *should* be.
    • To get perfect consistency you will need to replace the TOPS class numbers too.
    • Replica transfers seemed less anaemic and being rub-on gave the best result (IMHO) and were the ones I ended up choosing.

    Hope that helps?

  3. Wow , I'm amazed how quickly you knocked up a fiddle yard with the foam core! Fancy a commission? ;)

Looking forward to seeing how far Embankment Road has come on since StormEx this weekend at Showcase.

  4. A very interesting thread.

I remember seeing these at Worcester SH as a teenager. I've bought a /1 and a /2 to model exactly the same thing but it's way down on the modelling back-log!

Although I remember seeing 146 as per the photos you posted, I seem to remember a set or two in uniform sprinter livery (as per the /2s). You've got me digging around on Flickr now....

  5. Sorry to hear about the airbrush!

The layout is looking good. It's a big project so it's understandable that your enthusiasm for it will wax and wane.

By the way, I hope you are going to run some 4TCs on it? I have many happy memories of watching the trains on the far side of the boating lake from Poole Park when I was a small child. Mostly Blue/Grey 4TCs being propelled by a "bagpipes" 33.

  6. My latest order for FUD was also very badly affected with problems that I didn't see on previous prints. It looks similar to the problems that you have shown but the problem didn't appear on every model. I assumed that this is due to print direction but having seen your recent results, I think it might be more to do with problems with the machine.

The attached photos show some of the problems.

I raised an official complaint with Shapeways and am waiting to hear the result.

  7. Hi Martin,

The sound I attached is from the free Zimo SD40 sound project. Presumably the Howes chip that you have is based on the free ESU project (which could sound different/better)?

I'm keen to know what you make of the Howes sounds once you have the decoder installed. If they're no good, I've just seen that Digitrains do a 59 sound file for the Loksound which you could get blown on it (although this could also be the SD40 sounds given the description on their website: "Generic sound file for this class using the correct engine type and UK horns etc.").

  8. What are the options for sound chipping a 59? For some reason it just doesn't seem to be covered by the big players except Olivias trains. I've tried:

    SWD

    Howes

    Digitrains

    Coastal DCC

    Legomanbiffo

Has anyone fitted the Olivias chip and is it any good? Are there any alternatives?

From experience I'd say they don't sound that different to a 66, so maybe a 66 chip would do the trick?

  9. Hi Jo,

I'm also interested in the Thomas Hill 4 wheeler... planning on a model of one (or two) of them for my 4mm Whatley layout (but in ARC yellow rather than the Hanson blue).

I've just taken delivery of a Judith Edge kit of the 0-6-0 TH Steelman to be made into "Pride of Whatley" (325v?). It's rather a unique loco (quite different from the other Steelman's. I've been digging through old railway modellers to try and find the drawings (August 1989). I've got about 15 photos of the right hand side of the vehicle but none of the left. Even though it features on the Rail Freight Today video in several shots, the left side of it remains elusive! Anyway, the engine casing is going to require a lot of work. My current plan is to make custom etches for the engine casing and one or two other bits unique to 325v. This will be my first etched kit so experience on this will help when it comes to possibly scratch-building or etching the 4-wheelers (which are further off in my plans).

James, I believe it was Len Vass who built a model of it (I've got the RM with it in somewhere), but AFAIK it was Hugh Searle who built the 59s.

Martin, having dug through a load of 1980s RMs recently, you are right that the first 59 article in Railway Modeller was by Hugh Searle (in an issue from 86 IIRC). Then between about 87 and 92 there are loads of articles by Len Vass on Mendip wagons of various types.

Jo, I'll PM you with some shots of the 4-wheel TH that I've found on the internet (it's a pity fotopic search is down again at the moment). Maybe we can club together and persuade Judith Edge to do a kit of it? ;-)
