  1. I was once told where most of it ended up ... but quite embarrassingly, I've forgotten! However, I do know that some of it is still in use on the incline to Birkhill, on the Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway.
  2. Whilst trawling the 'net for more about 60528 on Sat 23rd April '66, I happened upon the following photos which may be of interest (links to a forum page with thumbnails): http://lensmen.org.uk/showthread.php?tid=1603&pid=6053#pid6053 and http://lensmen.org.uk/showthread.php?tid=1603&pid=6055#pid6055 Photos at Steele Road, near Galashiels, Shap and finally near Longtown.
  3. Although actual (clock) times need working out and we can see a signal check at Newcastleton, a full timing sheet for this tour can be found here: http://locoperformance.tripod.com/edition13/60528wav.htm Two separate logs of the tour also show the lateness of the tour in the down direction: "11th December 1965: The Warwickshire Railway Society "Waverley" tour ran into trouble with a coaching problem at Leeds, and by the time class A2 4-6-2 no 60528 Tudor Minstrell was ready to depart from Carlisle, we were 47 minutes late. So with a 10 coach, 340/360 ton load, would the A2 pull back any time. The answer was in the negative. All we could manage past Steele Road and Riccarton was 20/23 mph. So we were no less than 75 mins late into Edinburgh." and "We now had to follow, rather than precede, the 1.40pm Carlisle to Edinburgh service, which stopped at every station as far as Galashiels. It was 2.02pm before 60528 Tudor Minstrel departed from Carlisle, so no doubt we would soon catch up with the slower train ahead. But the crew decided to take things easily, and we fell to 21 mph beyond Riccarton. But then we were checked at Shankend, and were 69 minutes late at Hawick, where we took water.. Thereafter, we ran to Edinburgh, mainly downhill, losing another 3 minutes. Arrival time was 5.02pm." Given that I've acquired a couple of nice 35mm transparencies of this tour near Steele Road I've decided to put a short article together about this tour, as I've done with other tours in the past, for publication in the next issue of The Waverley. Logs from http://locoperformance.tripod.com/edition13/lnerpacifics.htm and http://www.confessionsofatrainspotter.org.uk/1965waverleyrailtour.htm
  4. ... and a perfect accompaniment to this is provided at https://www.railscot.co.uk/imageenlarge/imagecomplete.php?id=55892
  5. I remember when Peter Robinson uploaded a pile of his photos onto the CRA site in about 2005; what an amazing set of photos. He was a member of the same RCTS branch as me, we held meetings at the Station Hotel in Carnforth and I recall chatting to him on several occasions. He was quite interested when I gave my first ever talk about the Waverley Route around 1999 and later gave permission for WRHA to use his photos in the journals. A sadly missed chap. This photo was used as the rear cover of journal 9, an amazing ten years ago almost to the month! I'd deduced the erroneous number of the A2, but can't fathom my reasoning for captioning the 40 as being on an express - especially as I'd seen the other, earlier, photo of it!
  6. .... and it's still not made it to Hawick ..... yet p.s. keep up at the back!
  7. On-train footage from The Scottish Lowlander Railtour, 26th September 1964. This was the record-breaking ascent of Whitrope by A4 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley. It also shows the set-back at Carlisle after it had been incorrectly routed straight past Port Carlisle Branch Junction, then taking the correct route. Further tour details can be found at http://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/60s/640926sl.html and in Issue 12 of WRHA's journal, "The Waverley" from 2008. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49eKOipkG40
  8. There are, including D6903 on 4M46 then 4S41, D6846 on 4S40, D6857 on 4M49 then 4S43 .... The full list will be in the book "Border Diesels", that has up to now taken in excess of five years to write and may yet take another five at this rate!
  9. Yes, D60 had worked north on 1S22. D260 worked 3M01 Edinburgh-Carlisle parcels on Fri 3rd/Sat 4th ... it departed Hawick at 0002. It then worked back north on Sat 4th's 3S01, the 0350 Carlisle - Edinburgh parcels/mail. The final 3S01 in the early hours of Sun 5th was worked by D264. 1S78 on Sun 5th was worked by D1974.
  10. My OCD loves that numerical sequence ;-)
  11. I know the photo you're thinking, but I'm pretty sure this isn't it. You're thinking of the photo showing 70033 in a similar position, which is copyright WRHA Archive. It has been used by the BBC (with permission) amongst others. Not sure of the original photographer of several of those photos, suffice to say that there is the odd name that has only started appearing recently, particularly on that specific website.
  12. For whatever reason (or due explanation) D5131 worked the 1612 Edinburgh-Hawick (arr 1750) and the 1807 return Hawick-Edinburgh on Sat 4th Jan 69. I don't have a WTT to hand so you're in a position of strength to tell me whether or not it should have run - but I can categorically state that it did run, whether or not it should have done, with the greatest of respect. 1S65 was hauled by D160 that day, arriving at Hawick at 1710, departing at 1713. This had been 1558 ex-Carlisle. D160 also worked that night's 1M82 back south from Edinburgh; Hawick arr 2319, dep 2327.
  13. You've just reminded me that I posted up a section of this on Youtube as well, almost 4 years ago!
  14. 47 years ago. The final southbound departed.
  15. Many of Norman Turnbull's shots on there. Don't think he'd be happy to see them online.
  16. Top one is on the climb from Steele Road to Riccarton. Middle one I'd hazard a guess at being on the approach to Milepost 65 between Riccarton & Whitrope. Bottom one is as Dave has already said. Great shots by the way, thanks for posting them up!
  17. Some smart workings for OCD sufferers as well that final weekend, with D260, D160 & D60 all making appearances at some stage.
  18. Or spend just a little bit more by ordering it from the link below and feel that warm glow inside for actively supporting the Waverley Route Heritage Association. http://wrha.org.uk/the-association/merchandise/
  19. I got a copy of this about 10-15 years ago, though rather a weary copy, and put the Carlisle-Edinburgh section up on my 37175 Youtube account. Must say that when the BBC repeated the episode and broadcast a documentary on Iain Nairn (last year was it?) I raised a dram to the chap (he'd have liked that) as he is one of my all time absolute idols, and he's one that I'll never have the chance of meeting in person.
  20. The RCTS RO isn't very helpful here sadly. For September '68 it simply lists D53 Royal Tank Regiment, D89 Honourable Artillery Company and D112 as Peaks having been on the Waverley Route that month with no mention of specific trains or even dates. However, digressing a little, it does list an interesting move in D9000 Royal Scots Grey being taken off the down Flying Scotsman immediately on arrival at Waverley station to work the 1610hrs Edinburgh-Hawick on Saturday 21st September 1968.
  21. Cracking photos which have been linked before but such great shots it's nice to see them again! http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/6186-waverley-route-new-image-links-and-discussion/?p=1303395
  22. Have we seen this one before? http://www.ipernity.com/doc/319089/35358411
  23. Some new photos have emerged via the Southern Reporter, available for viewing via a newsreel-type thingumybob. http://www.thesouthernreporter.co.uk/news/memories-of-when-closed-track-was-hard-at-work-1-3624764 Details of the photographer etc are on the link. Not sure why these haven't surfaced before, I know that WRHA have put out many requests in the Southern previously for any unseen photos that can be scanned/digitised for future generations. Still good to see them though!
  24. There was a lot of discussion about this photo a couple of years ago .... see link: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/6186-waverley-route-new-image-links-and-discussion/?p=780353 A Britannia or a 9F were the main contenders.
  25. Not too sure about the signal boxes, but there are a few Lauder Light Railway plans available from the NRS ... I've done a catalogue search and your best bet is from item 61 onwards, as per the following link. Apologies if you've already been down this avenue of online research. http://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/overview.aspx?st=1&tc=y&tl=n&tn=n&tp=n&k=lauder+railway&ko=a&r=&ro=s&df=&dt=&di=y
