It looks in good condition but could be a late LNER or BR one as far as I know there is no difference between them!
...except for the numbers (ok some there was a mix of buffers amongst the batches)...does that number look like it starts B400...or is that just my 'confirmation bias' kicking in again...
-
...is that a BR 13t wooden hopper in the background or just one of the ordinary LNER ones??

The days are getting longer, some of the daffs are out, so it must be time for the Birtley show...a proper North Eatern tradition.

...Signal boxes...never built one before (except a Superquick one, and an Airfix one) so I thought I'd best do some reasearch, luckily for me the base of Kelloe Bank Foot box (the one photographed by Porsea main and only a couple of hundred yards from the quarry) still exists...so I went to have a look, tape measure in hand...
...the base was fairly standard for an NER Northern Division signal box (although it did look like at some stage the top half had been extended back by a couple of feet). I suspect it would have looked like Hett Mill (3 miles away on the ECML) as here...
However, the signal box before Kelloe BF was Coxhoe Bridge which was a very tall and thin (front to back) box...which is most likely what Kelloe BF looked like before it was extended back...(tho obviously not as tall!)
...and further along the line the box at Trimdon Station was even thinner still...and just to make things more interesting the signal boxes around Ferryhill were a right old mash up of NER designs, with no 2 boxes the same...there were designs from all 3 divisions of the NER within a 3 mile radius, with design features from the old Central division cropping up in later Northern Division designs...so the next move was to do some mock ups...
Firstly a Northern Division design, as per Hett Mill...
Secondly a Northern Division design similar in width to Coxhoe Bridge (with a little Central Division extra detailing above the windows)
Thirdly...to a similar width as Trimdon (again with some extra detailing)...
so to compare the 3...
remembering that Garmondsway is very much a Cameo where size is everything...I thought it best to roll out the mat and try the 3 designs in situ...weidly they all seem to be floating 6 (scale) inches above the ground...
...and the conclusion was, one was to deep, one was too thin and one was just right...so probably time to start building one in plastic...

Well I knew it was only a matter of time till Porcy dragged that pic out again.
And I had a good slagging off today at the show too...
In case anyone is wondering, that was the recent TV version of 'The 39 Steps' and nothing what so ever to do with the cop show Taggart.

...this is a better view of it...and, don't blame me if you get hooked onto Britain from above, its all Uncle Pourseas fault...he put me onto it.

I'm sure Uncle P will tell us what they were being loaded with...and the white staining around the drop down door must be some kind of clue...

Managed to increase the 1918 wagon fleet by three, a C9 and two C2s.
This one is of course not allowed on the branch...

Excellent news!
The J27 has been a much requested engine for sometime and it will fit in greatly with a number of the other releases that are being announced for an area up north rich in locomotive types, workload and abilities. Whats better is that at last someone is making a proper S&D machine!!
...you're going to have to convert it to a J26 if you want to run it on former S&D lines...they were much more common in the old Central Division...(West Auckland had 3 right up to 1962)

Excuse enough for me to get one...

Ya forgot about the one the old boy in the hospital bed opposite me used to drive at RHP's at Greencroft. 305302 I think? Make a nice little diorama that. Sat alongside the the Consett Tyne Dock line. Maybe Eddy might consider it as an extension to Blackbill.
Funny that Tyne Commissioners had a 48DS and a B2 0-6-0 Peckett on their books at the same time. Maybe Hornby will do a twin pack???
P
...also Seaham had a B2 Peckett as did Eldon/St Helens, Hordon and the 2 at Ryhope...
So that makes 11 48DSs having worked in Durham and 6 Peckett B2s...this of course doesn't include those that worked North of the Tyne or South of the Tees.

Cant help but feel deflated and that Hornby massively missed a chance to charge into the NE Region / railway area.
Masses of duplication, yet more Southern models for a market massively over saturated, while leaving areas that poll well and can match anticipated demand. Think Hornby had the exact time to bring out a B16 or J21. But no...
...less of a charge, more of a shunt...but many a shunt maketh the train
...the 48DS was quite popular in County Durham...

You'll get a topic which has everything in it (with illustrations and even some photographs) from new toolings through to new liveries etc. plus topics for each of the new toolings.
I've not read everything in the topic but I can see there are some guesses that are right; many that are wrong but there are some things coming up at 10.00 that I haven't seen any guesses for at all so there's definitely some surprises in there. One of the major surprises will be the advanced stages that some things are at, one or two of which will probably result in quite a bit of pre-ordering over the next few days due to the "I didn't know I wanted one of those but I don't want to miss out" factor.
I will close this topic off before 10.00.
Is something happening at 10 o'clock today? I must have missed this announcement...oh wait a minute, this explains the Hornby count down advert...I should pay more attention...anyone for a brew while you wait?

So Billy Cotton's lobbying wasn't all in vain!
Having been the beneficiary and guest of GTi's eatery & hostelry recommendations of the area in the past, looks like the The Red Shed or the Kings Arms may be about to be scratched from the "must make another return visit" list.
What say thee, Mr Axlebox?
P
...would that be 'The Star' near ASDA on the A6186 [standbridge Lane] "A cosy Inn dating from 1821 with a streamside beer garden...It serves one or two of its own beers plus four or five guest ales mainly from local breweries..." as my recently aquired copy of the 2019 Good Beer Guide advises?
I'll miss the near pitch black darkness of the Kings Arms (its gas lit and they don't feed the meter very often) and the politics lecture that is the Red Shed mind...
All power to the EMGS and lets hope its a good move back over to the dry side.
