  1. Ooh look at that, the casing correctly follows the cylinder radius, and as a result the O gauge model looks just that bit more A4ish than the OO model posed alongside. Some interesting tooling decisions to be made to allow this feature to appear on the production model.

I think you need to check out the posts in the original Topic Hattons  A3 and A4 to see the comments re the O gauge A4 casing

  2.

So far as I can tell from photographs, the front end should still taper in more. The 'nose' would appear to be about 70% of the width at the bottom compared to at smokebox level.

I think the taper still has to be more.... note that at the bottom, the width of the nose is significantly less than the gauge to the bogie wheels. Note also that the lamp-irons directly above the buffers have more-or-less and equal amount of flat space on each side, whereas on your print, there is only a small gap before the nose rises

Is the chimney wide enough? the full size one has a very meaningful one...!

    We'll get there!

That head on image of a real A4 is very telling, the models shape and chimney do not match

  3. Hi Giles, thanks for the feedback.

There's no need to be sorry and we certainly do welcome the feedback. We're just as concerned with making sure the unquestionably iconic shape is faithfully reproduced.

I'll certainly be looking further in to the points you have raised once I'm back in the office.

Thanks again and have a great weekend.

    Cheers,

    Dave

The rear shape of the double chimney and the slope down to the Smokebox should be in two stages. The Cad image of the model gives the impression its a single sloping drop to the smokebox. DJh got that right with both their A4 kits Finney not so for BR days

  4. Nice work Brian......that loco looks very pink!

DJH instructions have great photos, but the lack of text can be a chore-most others' destructions (yes that reads right) are t'other way around!

Hopefully if anyone can make sense of it you can....cracking project!

I was tempted to source a Heljan 37 and the DJH detailing pack but bottled out in the end. So Im keeping an eye on the progress of this project to see just how big a mistake it was in not going for it

  5. Two issues regarding the body of the A3

    1) The double chimney does not look right, rather flat looking

    2) Smokeflectors are sitting too high on the smokebox and maybe a tad too long. Having said that even the ones on Flying Scotsman are not totally correct

Still enough here to get a bit excited about

  6. I have HJ to thank (I think that is the word) for getting me into O guage diesels as I purchased a class 47 when they came out and I have spent far too much of my money since their way.....

    BUT.....

HJ really need to do better research - especially when so many of us point out these problems but nothing is ever done it seems with original basic shape once produced. Brian tries his best with as much as he can but can obviously only go so far. When you hear a new model is to be produced you just have to pray they don't mess it up too much (thankfully the upcoming Peak looks pretty decent). I've said it before but they should have cleaned up with their Mk1 coaches but they got the shape wrong so I sold mine and have been buying 2ndhand Brassworks ones which I will have to repaint into Blue/Grey. I have had to cut the cabs off my class 40 and refit them to get them at the correct angle - why should I have to do that with a £500+ loco??. The Class 31 seems a few mm too low compared to all my other diesels. A bit more time spent on Research & Development could be easily recouped + lots more with a spot on model being produced in the end. I know Dapol have been doing their 08 for years but atleast it looks like they have been prepared to go back to the drawing board (probably since Richard Webster got involved) and it really looks like a spot on model will be produced - shape wise and they should sell loads and loads of them. It all depends on your level of modelling but most of us O guagers want top notch for the money we are asked to pay. Another problem with the 25 was what version to produce with the different cab fronts etc. That might have split the market almost in half too. Obviously in the interests of HJ and O guage I wish HJ well with their 25 but it could have been so much better if they could just listen to forums such as these and take on board what is said.

Next - it is a little way off but I'm just hoping they don't mess up their 03 - otherwise I'll be on the lookout for another Brassworks one.

I fully agree. Has Heljan produced anything yet that is anywhere accurate. Test models appear with inaccuracies, info is passed back to Heljan but the production run appears without rectification. It will be interesting to see how Hattons deal with their-forthcoming Gresley A4, A3 . and coaches for 2018 release

Deltic 17 I'm intrigued regarding your mention of Class 40 cab alterations. I'm assuming you have altered the angle of the Cab front windows which are rather flat looking. I would interested in how you went about it.

I had considered having an etch produced but never got around to it

The Finney kits could not be in better hands, with a proven master builder.  Who could forget your Finney A3 build here a few years back. That build drove me to completing my own A3

Ironic that you are currently building a Finney Duchess

Expanding and enhancing the range of kits and parts, I have to say this is great news for 7mm followers.

I wish you and your fellow colleagues every success with your new venture

    Bob

  8. Well that's great news indeed for those that missed out on an A3, A4, V2, or Duchess

The whole range deserved a new owner and let us hope that the original quality is maintained or even improved upon

Prospect of brand new models is mouth watering unless its another GWR thingy

    Incoming !!!!!!

  9. So I am making progress of sorts, though a cold and Xmas stuff ( parties actually! ) have kept me away from the bench, not to mention trying to learn Templot in an attempt to get my layout started.

I've cut the frames out for the Slaters hornblocks and thinned down the middle ones so that the crank axle will fit. Yes - the top right hornblock is twisted - blast!

It's been a difficult year for many of us, loss of loved ones, parents to deal with.

Have a great Xmas and New Year everyone. Lets look after each other and have a great modelling year in 2016.

After a difficult year myself 2016 cant come quick enough

All the best to you Tony and keep up the great work. Your posts are always a must read

In view of your comments I think if it were me I would consider filing the Smoke box/Boiler casting as a last resort.  Cutting back the frame spacer or cut it out completely, then replacing with scrap piece of brass strip fitted lower down in the chassis. That would enable you to retain the screw line which I'm supposing is there as fixing point to attach the chassis to the body

  11. Arh the old NuCast kits, that brings back a few memories.

It was a NuCast Q6 kit that got me into building loco's back in the 70's

Bill Stott and his little Hartlepool model shop was a regular destination back then along with Dave Alexander's equally small premises in South Shields. They were Godsends back then. Kit design and manufacture has come a long way since those days.

Of course Dave is still at it but have not heard anything about Bill for a long time. North East pioneers

  12. That was quick David. "No rest for the wicked" eh

There are a couple of amendments to the DJH variant compared to the original Piercy Kit mainly with a Cast Boiler and running plate replacing brass etch. Also the method of how the chassis and boiler match up during construction differs to the Piercy one

    Anyway, another "must follow" topic.

    Regards

    Bob
