  1. Looking really good Brian, cant wait to see it finished. Made a start on the bogies this evening and I already know I will need to order the sprue with replacement brake cylinders on, Can I ask do you use an airbrush or a Railmatch aerosol. My steam outline go off to a colleague a local painter and lining expert but spraying a Deltic Im willing to do myself. Anyway back to getting those ridges off I can concur with Peter re the use of wide flat blade for removing the raised edge around the bogies Regards Bob http://tracksrevisited.smugmug.com/
  2. Excellent, helpful images Brian, you have done an amazing job of removing the raised edge on the bogies. By the way Brian hand painting the quarter light windows to represent the plate over replacement works as I have tested it out and it looks ok to my eye but I would suggest also carefully painting the back of the window to reduce the liklihood of backlighting seeping through. I think I will invest in a set of replacement windows from Howes in case I damage the existing ones when stripping down the body.. Those cast Air-horns from MMP look cracking . The list of added bits gets longer with each of your thread contributions. If I was looking for bits to replace on a steam outline kit loco I know where to look but not so for Diesels so this thread is an education but i'm not complaining Thanks also to Pete H and others re solving the Headcode box light seal poser Regards Bob http://tracksrevisited.smugmug.com/
  3. Thank you Brian I thought you must have taken off the sideframes somehow. I look forward to seeing the images Deltic 17 - Some good ideas there to replicate the light seals on a plated headcode box and thank you for the positive feedback re the content of "Tracks" ---- Sunderland Bridge eh that takes me back One crazy idea I thought about was that permanent black felt-tip pens come with variety of tip widths I have one that is just just too small to the extent it was a tight fit for the headlight opening. With a very slightly wider nib.and with the headcode plate laid on a flat surface keeping the pen absolutely virtically allow it to centre on the opening then twist in a circular fashion with a full rotation hopefully leaving a nice thin black impression on the raised lip of the light seal of the headcode panel. Anymore for anymore Regards Bob http://tracksrevisited.smugmug.com/
  4. Hmmm the ETH socket itself looks fine to me but the baseplate does look a tad too wide but an easy fix with a spare piece of etch bent to shape. The soon to be released etched set from Pete Harvey is great news. I would be quite happy to use all of the bits to alter my Deltic to later condition, its just the required complete paint job thats putting me off at the moment Brian great inspiration from your good self . Incidently do the bogie sideframes come off easily as I would surmise it would be an easier task to remove the ridge that way Bob Ps if anyone can come up with the best method of creating the black coloured seal surrounds to the plated over headcode box lights without ballsing up the yellow paint I would like to hear it
  5. Forgive me if Im missing something here but surely JLTRT should provide a kit option whereby the MK 1 coach sides come with the window frame surround ready moulded on and not as seperate parts to add if modelling a certain era. I have to agree with what others have said, the window frames are far far too pronounced and as a result fail to match the level of accuracy I would expect from JLTRT.
  6. >>>what does grate with me a bit, and it's the same on the 37, is the big grey cover inside each cab that is desperately trying to hide the motor. These covers also seem to mean the seats are set impossibly far forward? <<< I agree with you however, when you take the body off you can see that the motor covering could be largely dispensed with as its mainly there to hide the large brass bearing sat atop of each motor. The gap between the cover and bearing is quite generous and I guess is there to deal with potential fore/ aft rocking and side movement of the bogie. As for the seats these could be cut off and re-sited, albeit new spiggots would be required for the seats to be fitted onto. In reality a Deltic footplate is quite a restrictive space in fact best described as a small cubicle with a central entry point to the main footplate area between floor to ceiling backplates that are situated directly behind each seat . These jjust about line up at the point where the side glazing is split into two windows. This enclosure could I feel be replicated once the motor moulding part of the footplate was removed. Whether I or other Heljan Deltic owners would want to go that far is another matter I have yet to decide but its not impossible. Regards Bob
  7. Hi Brian If that means you are compiling a list of items for someone to produce on your behalf I would be interested in learning what they are. I would certainly like a set of Headcode box covers. I note the even smaller of the two types provided in the DJH kit would require filing to fit and anyway I would prefer to keep them for the kit. Nose steps would also be a must and save me making them If you prefer just PM me with the details Regards Bob http://tracksrevisited.smugmug.com/
  8. Brian I meant to ask in the the previous message but was that Railmatch Enamel or Acrylic paint that you used on the Deltic Regards Bob
  9. Thank you Brian your reply was immensely helpful and I very much enjoyed the video clips". Holiday Haunts" was always a joy at at exhibitions. Its a pity its now off the show circuit Regards Bob
  10. Over the coming months I intend to slowly bring my Heljan Deltic up to late 70's early 80's appearance with filled in sandbox openings plated over headcode box filled in quarter-light and other added details. If I can get away with it I would prefer to do this without recourse to a full repaint. Of the current paint suppliers who does the nearest paint match to the Blue and Yellow used on the Heljan Deltic. I would then intend to give the loco a blow over with a satin coat before weathering as Deltics in service did not run around with a total overall matt exterior finish. And a question for Brian D should I have to repaint the loco are the glazing units just a pressure fit and can these be pushed out without the likelihood of major fractures. I see the model comes with a comprehensive list of spare parts so I guess broken items could be replaced but with a short run model I doubt these will be constantly produced by Heljan Regards Bob
  11. I thought Pete Waterman had indicated that when the Heljan model was announced there would no forthcoming Deltic model in the JLTRT range. The fact of the matter is that despite the issues raised here and elsewhere the Heljan example will sell in numbers and in doing so would undermine future sales of any Waterman produced example. Bearing in mind the cost of making one available in kit form would there be sufficient sales to recover the research/ production costs and make a profit. Im sure Mr Waterman a very shrewd businessman has done the figures.
  12. Silverstreak

    Hornby B1

Well irrespective of how the tender is coupled to the loco I have to say from the images thus far shown I have to say the chimney looks supect to me as did the one on the ex Replica current Bachmann B1, which I recall I removed and replaced with Dave Bradwell B1 brass example. Surely all they had to do was copy it from the L1 Bob
  13. I should have gone to specsavers as I see from the images already on here that the window surrounds on the Heljan Deltic are already moulded on and look fine
  14. Nice one Brian Incidently I only emailed you last evening enquiring about the headcode box covers so your above post was very timely. Although a box onto which the ETH socket is fitted could be made from a scrap bit of brass sheet it could be a suggested additional part .Also how difficult would it be to produce Timken Axlebox covers or are these already available elsewhere How about the windcsreen surrounds as additional etched parts I will leave to other experts to suggest further item Finally an open question to fellow forum members does anybody produce a first class quality ETH socket box Regards Bob
  15. One of our club members brought along a Blue Heljan Deltic this evening and I have to say i was pretty impressed with it as It looked much better in the flesh than from the pictures I had previously seen on the net. It had a real presence about it and so its reaching for the wallet time I really hope that Brian Hanson can be persuaded to do a Headcode box etch at some time in the near future as thats how I remember them. Has anyone on here contacted Brian to test the waters !! Bob
  16. Lovely job Brian. I have been toying with the idea of having a go at a JLTRT Mk1 coach kit How long do you think it would take to complete one (Im retired) excluding painting. The last coaches I built were back in my 4mm days and years ago now, a nice rake of Southern Pride Mk1's. But I will need something to hang behind a few tenders, I just keep putting it off Bob
  17. Thank you for your reply Brian. Its a pity as I did fancy a Green one and will now mean that the lower green band will almost certainly be narrower than on the prototype. Whether this will end up looking overly strange and spoils an otherwise good reproduction model we will just have to wait and see. Unlike with their 4mm stuff Heljan dont do reruns for their O gauge range so will never see another. I wonder if Mr Hanson fancies doing an etch !! Bob
  18. I see the forthcoming new 7mm Deltic is being advertised by some suppliers as now having " New tooling" Does anyone know what this refers to. Have the nose side grills been re-situated to their proper position. The latter was the only major aspect of the model that I could find wrong and as someone has previously pointed out if they remain unchanged it will make the positioning of lower green band a little difficult. Despite having a partly built DJH kit destined to become an FP white cab race horse, a green Heljan variant looks very tempting Bob
  19. Viewing the TMC images three isues stand out for me 1) Superheater header covers on the smoke-box look far too flat and insignificant 2) Radius rod is fixed as per usual mid gear but appears to slope down towards the cylinder !! 3) As per the A1 tender the the axle box springs look look half the depth they should be On the plus side the overall look and shape appear to be pretty good with fine representations of an A2 single chimney and smoke-deflectors. The head on view looks impressive Bob
  20. Thanks Jim, I understand it now. The Tornado Chip looks very temping as it has a far more authentic chime whisle than that available on the SWD A4 supplied chip especially so when on on the move. Im assuming that the intermittent discharge of the Drain cocks will eventually be added to the Tornado chip but I can check that out with Howes when I eventally get around to ordering one Thanks for the info much appriciated Bob
  21. Im quite taken by the intermittent sound of the drain cocks being discharged while the Bachmann O4 was on the move although it is not listed as one of the functions so how is it produced. Im tempted to purchase a sound chip for my recently completed A4 and A1, overall the sound reproduction appears to becoming more authentic.
